Has new comic book adaptation Human Target already been dumbed down beyond recognition by Fox? The first review of the much-buzzed-about pilot for the series suggests so - and points the finger at Dollhouse as the reason why.

When you're done, come right back, because I have a problem with this particular quote:

"It's obvious Fox didn't want a situation worse than Dollhouse. The problem with Dollhouse was that there was no central character for viewers to identify and root for because the main character literally had no personality and the main actress would play a completely different person every week."

I totally disagree. I believe Joss and company did a good job of bringing to the surface the essence of Caroline/Echo's personality with each new engagement.

Operative: "Its worse than you know..." Mal: "It usually is."

It sounds like the reviewer didn't watch all the shows, or any.
Thanks!

I didn't read the article (don't much care about HUMAN TARGET) but agree with the quote you've pulled out.

Until near the end of the season, DOLLHOUSE had no sympathetic characters with whom the audience could identify (and even at the end, it was arguable).

The entire staff of the Dollhouse goes right out the window as eligible characters, because they're bad guys. I mean, really, even Boyd, who is the "best" of the lot, is a willing party to what the Dollhouse does, which is quite horrible. They can try to make Topher as "Xander Lite" as they want, but nothing changes the fact that every member of the staff is scum.

The Actives are marginally characters at best, and Ballard... well, weak tea for much of the run.
