Spoilerized, for the few who might not have seen it yet ? Yeah, right...

When Cypher decides to go all Judas and turn on humanity, what is he basing his belief that Agent Smith can even deliver on his promise to return Cypher to the Matrix ?

And even if he could be re-introduced, why would Agent Smith even deliver ? Because he SAID he would ? After he has what he wanted, why not just take Cypher and erase him ?

They could re-introduce him, but in the end that's a lot of trouble to go through, I can't see the process getting the OK from, well, WHOEVER makes those decisions.
Cypher WANTED to believe it so badly, that he took Smith at his word.
Good thing he died before he felt the sting of computer betrayal.

I've always believed Cypher would indeed be considered too much of a liability, and too much trouble even to stick back in again.

Still, it isn't actually costing the machines anything: it's all virtal. Besides, I could be persuaded to believe the machines deriving a certain sense of restored order from re-inserting him into the Matrix; and possibly even a sense of vindication: that ultimately humanity chooses, voluntarily, to undergo their fate. With that in mind, I could see how they'd actually keep to the deal.

Cypher was basically committing suicide. Whether Smith reloaded him into the Matrix or not, the Cypher that existed just then, who knew what was happening and savoured the taste of synthetic steak, would have been erased, like a Doll coming in for his "treatment."
