I have season two, and it's awesome! I'm working on getting season one...does anyone here have it? Tell me how great it is to make me jealous!
Or just discuss it a bit.

A friend of mine put it best when he said he's excited, but only when he remembers this alternate reality was created by Picard going back in time & messing about with the past.
(And it's no longer off topic)

I hate to admit it but I was wondering until I read

"In another surprising move, the movie includes the character of Jar Jar Binks – the universally-hated alien from a competing science fiction franchise, Star Wars."

completely over the top joke, lmao

I'm actually really psyched up for the movie - I'm watching some of the best of TOS in preparation (remastered versions - they're fine, the new effects aren't too obtrusive and the picture does look incredibly sharp). Plus remember to read Countdown, the comic series leading up to the movie, complete with several awesome plot twists.

Dude, NO.
The Blu-Ray season 1 will be out in a few weeks, at practically the same price. I'm not telling you what to do, but cancel your order. It's only logical to assume you will go Blu at some point.

Actually, the zippers & make up lines are just about visible at this level, this is about as defined as I want to go. I may go Blu, but there are plenty of shows & movies I have that will ever stay standard DVD for me.

And I don't know how excited I am about this whole "It's not really a reboot, it's an alternate timeline caused by Picard" thing. Really? Is that what the obsessive fanboys demand? I find the whole notion exhausting. Just let 'em remake the show fer cryin' outloud. You want the old show then watch the old show--let this version exist on its own terms, why not?

Yes, you want this to capture something of the old magic of Shatner/Nimoy/Kelly, but damn, I don't think you're gonna do it by pretending this isn't what it is--a new show.

If in ten years, Firefly found its way back to the small screen with a new cast taking over for our beloved BDH's (god forbid), I don't want to be told that this is an alternate timeline where Mal Reynolds doesn't look like Nathan Fillion. That's just damn silly.

Why redesign it? 'Cause this is sci-fi and not fantasy? 'Cause what looked like futurism on 60's TV looks like regional children's theatre today? 'Cause if they had a huge freakin' budget back in '68 the show woulda looked different anyway?

And crikey, Lost in Space didn't flop because the robot was redesigned--it flopped for the same reason all remakes flop--the script utterly sucked! Gary Oldman was nothing like the original Dr. Smith but he made it work 'cause he's flippin' brilliant. What we need in our remakes is brilliant people owning the property and doing something kickass with it! Slavish kowtowing to some elusive 50 year old fanbase doesn't put asses in the seats, Isall! (I'll see your and raise ya a )

It was serviceable, but utterly uninspired. I'm just sayin' if it at least looked right, it would have pulled maybe twice as many fans.

Then maybe the second one would have had a better script.

Yanno, I hate to say this, but thankfully I can get away with it cause I am half ploshed on brandy and headed for three sheets to the wind in a hurry...

You know what REALLY made some of the movies/episodes, as opposed to the amusement of Shatners scenery chewing glory ?

SHIP PR0N!

Seriously, does not the long slow pans of the ships add a glorious factor, especially on the big screen ?
And the interiors just touch it up, don't they ?

And combined with some seriously awesome soundtracks, especially Horners work, the acting is almost an afterthought!

I refer to you to what I consider hands down THE most awesome scene in trek, and with this in mind, note how the Ship Pr0n and Audio Score frames and enhances the truly masterful chemistry between Montalban and Shatner.

Complete with obligatory evil overlord gloating!
And gettin kicked in the teeth for it!

While I don't hold out much hope for the pretty-boy cast, formula-matic "acting" and obligatory wangsty crap (which Kirk never truly suffered from a single day in his entire freakin life!) I do plan to throw the bills at it and see it on the big screen for the very reasons detailed above.

In vino, veritas, folks - cause it ain't a bunch of boy-band rejects imma be goin there to see, righty-O ?

i've been watching the remastered version of tos on cbs.com occasionally.
even on my pc i can tell a huge difference in quality.now i need to purchase,(hopefully)the series in blu-ray if and when it comes out...

On February 17, 2009- Paramount announced the Season 1 of TOS on Blu Ray for a May release to coincide with the new feature film coming from Paramount.[27] It was rumoured that with the Remastered versions on this release, the original versions will also be included. It's suspected Seasons 2 and 3 will follow.

I dunno, HKC, the only thing ever so consistent about James T Kirk was his unshakeable certainty that he was always right, usually in combination with an out and out legendary arrogance.

Which, of course, was part of his charm.

I honestly don't think the man was even capable of much more than a brief period of vague uncertainty, usually lasting mere minutes, if that.

I'm pretty sure the guy was incapable of whiny angst.

That logic might hold better if it hadn't alrerady been redesigned a few times.

The other redesigns were because of the old versions being destroyed if I remember correctly.

But with this NEW movie, even though still cannon, Abrams is taking the point of view that this one person, Nero, going back in time to get vengence on Spock has completely and totally screwed up the timeline via the butterfly effect. That action messed with many things on mulitple levels, one of which could very well be how the Enterprise was designed. Just look at it that way and everything will be all right

Now that I know more about the basic plot devices Abrams is using here, I'm really psyched to see this movie. I know Shatner was upset that he was not asked to appear, but really, how could he the way the story was written? Next to impossible. I just hope I get to see it in a theater and not have to wait for DVD.

Not the Motion Picture version, it was just a spiffed-up re-design in the manner of what we have here.

After that though, yeah, they blowed 'em up.

I wish they would make a Deep Space Nine movie or TV movie or something,

of all the series, it was my favorite... and Avery Brooks as Ben Sisko was my favorite Captain.

It also seemed like Treks first experiment with long term plot and storylines ( maybe copying Babylon 5 a little in that ) and I think it helped evolved scifi that way a little bit.

It took me freaking FOREVER to find the first season DVD set (ended up getting it from Amazon eventually). The whole series, though....man. Even though there are some episodes of the third season that I just can't force myself to endure (chief amongst them 'The Way to Eden' and 'The Savage Curtain'), I grew up on Star Trek reruns and I say the new view is freaking BRILLIANT! Sometimes I find that the score from some episodes - 'The Naked Time', 'The Enemy Within' and 'The Doomsday Machine' especial - gets stuck in my head for a day or longer. Ahhh, the memories. Fond and fine (or painful with regard to the Shat's third-season antics).

Now as to the Enterprise rendered in the new movie....eww. Just eww. That's all I can really say without sounding like a snotty Star Trek purist. I just hope the 'number curse' of the Trek films remains broken.

And oh yes, 3 was good (just watched it last night in fact), and 10 was ugh. Other than that, though, there is something to the number curse if you ask me. ;) 2, for instance, was best of the lot. KHAAAANNNN!!!!

I don't think so. Looks modern and that's what people really want. For newbies to the series (hard to imagine, I know) they'll think it looks, neat. Purists will have a problem with it. People like me who are sci-fi fans in general won't mind the change (at least I don't).

But that brings me to another question. I grew up watching TOS after school and what not. Watched TNG (loyally), DS9 and Voyager (not as much but still enjoyed them - didn't get into "Enterprise"), and have seen most of the movies except for maybe the last two. Though not a die-hard Trekkie, I do enjoy them as good sci-fi and I'm relatively familiar with the cannon. I want my kids to enjoy the Trek universe as well. How should I introduce them? I have the first movie at home (from the library) that I want us all to watch together, but I fear that would entail a build-up storytelling marathon on my part (or at the very least stopping the movie every now and then to explain the relationships and all that).

What would you all recommend I show them first? A few episodes of each series? Or what?

I think the number "curse" applies more to the good films than bad. Yeah 3 was decent (would be better without Kirks pink uniform...) as was 1, but 2, 4, 6, and 8 are pretty far above the others.

Except, yeah, 10/Nemesis sucked hard. Far moreso than the odd-numbered Insurrection.

Speaking subjectively here, 1 was my favourite (the Wise Cut), and I loved Insurrection.
Nemisis took a second viewing to become acceptable, and as it's Jerry Goldsmith's final Trek score, I had to own it. But even Goldsmith couldn't make me get 5.

I'm pretty loyal to Khan as my favorite, with First Contact and Undiscovered country close behind. I like 1, but as a more intellectual excersize - it doesn't grab me in the way the others do.

I liked Insurrection, and am kinda stupified by all the hate I see leveled at it. Sure, it's not the most cinematic, and really just boils down to a long episode. But though it might be a bit mediocre as a movie-movie, I still like it. Nemesis, however, was so terribly written that I can't sit through it. It's almost Final Frontier-bad to me.

I like all the Star Trek movies. Ranked in order of my preference they are :

1. The Voyage Home
2. The Wrath of Khan
3. The Search For Spock
4. First Contact
5. Generations
6. Insurrection
7. Nemesis
8. The Undiscovered Country
9. The Motion Picture
10.The Final Frontier

Those that don't see it this way are illogical.

Or what?

Anyone? Anyone at all?

I feel like I'm being ignored today! LOL

Ripwash, I think this might be helpful :
Start your kids off with the Star Trek Animated series. I don't know how old they are, but most kids like cartoons. The Trek animated series ran 1973-1974 and has 22 episodes available on DVD. They are terrific, many being sequels to original Trek tv episodes. If they like the cartoons, then they'll be ready for the tv show, and the actors' voices and characters will be familiar to them.

I forgot all about those!

They might like them . . . but aren't the cartoons a little . . . hokey? I don't remember them all that well, I just remember bad animation. LOL

I think they'd like the live-action stuff better at this stage. I guess I'll just start from the begining.

The animation outright sucks. The stories are good, but I'd show them that stuff last. Start with the original series eps, my son swears by them. Then bleed in TNG, the movies etc.

At least it featured Picard's clone & not his long lost son or brother, LOL!
Okay, it wasn't very good, but the music & FX were cool. I really bought it for the first ten minutes though. I'm sentimental is all.
