Did anybody catch the 2-hour pilot for this new series, starring Ian McShane?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kings_%28U.S._TV_series%29

I was completely floored by it, and so were most reviewers, but it "was the lowest-rated program between 8 and 11 p.m. on a major broadcast network."

So, like Firefly, a terrific show that will die a quick death.

HELL'S KITTEN

I enjoyed it, though I think there were a couple small parts that I missed, which ended up confusing me ever so slightly later on. I thought Al... I mean... Ian was fantastic, but I'm hypnotised by his voice, so I may be biased. I thought the boy. Um. Soldier kid. Can't remember his name. I thought he did really quite well.

Overall, I thought the pilot was interesting and a good set-up for the series. Unfortunately, I think it's one of those shows that could go either way: very, very good, or very, very mundane. I'm hoping the writers will be able to live up to the talents of the cast...

...and maybe give Ian McShane lots of soliloquies with plenty of words and concepts normally inappropriate for network television... Oops. Letting my bias show again.

Got it DVR'd, but haven't watched it yet.

I loved it. I'm a fan of well-done alt-history, so there's that --and it's so intelligent and complicated that its unlike anything currently on TV (and not as depressing as Galactica).

The lead's name was David, BTW. David, son of Jessie, who destroyed a Goliath-class tank with hand-held weapons.

And yes, it's adapted from the Biblical story (David slew Goliath, then became King).

Kings pilot was probably the best written thing I've seen on TV in a long time. Let's hope the rest of the show lives up to it. It's always a bad sign when I take a liking to something. I'm a curse. It has always been cancelled within a season of me starting to watch it, if I catch the beginning, it's truly doomed :)

I was wondering when a Kings thread would pop up.

I got to see the two hour premeire and was in awe at the scale of this show. The production value had me reeling at first, then the writing, then the acting, and I fell in love with it well before it was over. The whole premise and the execution was mesmerizing, it's obviously parallel to the story of David, but the way it was told in the first episode showed how much potential it had. I'm really excited for this show and I'll be huluing it. I agree with the statement of it being the best pilot I've seen in a loong time.

That said, with the ratings it was given, i fear it's a Firefly. Brilliance, but canned before it really gets to strut it's stuff. That said though, it's on NBC, and NBC is often very kind with it's shows and gives them the time they need to fly or plummet.

Yes, we all liked it, I haven't heard a dissenting voice yet, on or off the web. Sad if it dies. They have filmed 13 eps., hopefully we'll get to see them.

I actually wondered if there was a deliberate govt. control being implemented there to down the show, which is about govt. control to some extent, and a govt. that might not like that message.

Perhaps I am being punished for something I did in the past. Really guys, I'm sorry. Every time I watch a show that is perfect it gets low ratings and gets canceled. Am I cursed? Is it me? If so I apologize, maybe I should just stop watching tv and move to the desert. (hubris much)

No, it happens to all of us. There are competing theories:

1. Those who like things outside the mainstream always like things outside the mainstream, and so are always a minority

2. Things that are interesting are off-message for the MSM, and so they get cancelled for other reasons, ratings are staged with timing/conflicts, but someone is out to get revoutionary content.

3. High production value shows are generally better, and people who appreciate real effort like them, but networks hate them because they cost a lot of money, and so they try to have them killed.

These are some of the ones I hear most often, but whatever the reason, you're certainly not alone. Myself, I can't think that a show has ever been renewed after I started watching it.

Surely not a conscious Firefly shout-out in this week's episode, but I thought it was cool that the codeword amongst King Silas' people for when he was visiting his mistress and illegitimate son was "Serenity".

Specifically, it's that he's "in serenity."

That's not the usual phrasing the emotional state.
