Surprised to see there's no thread on this already (didn't wanna dive through the archives to bump something).

The latest DC animated DVD came out this past Tuesday, featuring Kerri Russell as Diana of Themyscira and our own Nathan Fillion as Steve Trevor. I got the 2-disk set, but have only watched the movie so far (there's also a commentary track, some docs, and a preview of the next movie: Green Lantern: First Flight, due out this summer).

It's essentially a treatment of Diana's origin, a la Batman Begins, though it's far too short to do justice to one of the DCU's most complex and multifacetted characters. Specifically, it focuses on Diana-the-Warrior and neglects the more nurturing, idealistic, and politically savvy aspects of her personality (justifiable, perhaps, as these are arguably characteristics she would have picked up after being away from Hippolyta's influence). Nathan gets most of the best lines (though Diana's "Aw, crap" moment was giggle-worthy, despite being predictable).

I loved it, though there were a few details of Diana's story that I would've liked to see included (specifically Cassie and Helen Sandsmark, and the role they play in Diana's acclimation to Man's World --there's even a bit-player character who would've made a perfect fit for Cassie [just the right age], but alas), and it could've used a bit more blood. I'm not a fan of gore, per se, but there was enough Gladiator-style swordplay that some stained swords and scarlet splashes would have been appropriate. I know it's PG-13 (and not R), but anime gets away with bloodletting all the time, and it's still kid-friendly enough for uncut network play.

I liked it a lot, but the Green Lantern one is what I'm REALLY salivatin' over!

I didn't like it. I guess I take my WW mythos too seriously, because things just read wrong to me. Artemis was pretty true. It felt like they combined "The Circle" (shiny) with "Amazons Attack" (terrible) but decided too many female baddies was overkill so they threw in Ares for some good old-fashioned male bashing.

Maybe it wasn't the arc, but the dialogue. I can't pinpoint it on one viewing.

What was with Etta Candy? Gail has put in a lot of effort over this last run to make Etta a woman who fans can believe is one of Diana's best friends...the she gave us this?

I typically like Gail's work, so I was disappointed with the screenplay. I expected better. Her most recent arc in the comics is rubbing me wrong too. Maybe I'm just experiencing a general bitter spell towards the WW world. You don't want to know what's happened to Cassie.

That's cool. Nathan and Keri starred together in "Waitress" as well...

STORYMARK

Not a WW fan, but I've enjoyed all the DC animated flicks so far, and have heard good things about this one. Hope to watch it over the weekend, once I get caught up on some other projects.

Definitely going to watch this soon:)
And also I think it's partly Nathan gets good lines and partly his delivery makes them funny

Well, this is an origin story. It makes sense that it'd take time for Diana's non-Themiscyran friendships to form. And Diana was being a bit stand-offish for no good reason.

And Ares is pretty much Diana's only real arch-nemesis (other than Cheetah [who. . . isn't really A-list, frankly] and Circe [who has enough character backstory to highjack the movie]).

Plus, Ares gave some explanation for Hippolyta's hatred for men (and some badassitude as she offs her own son).

I liked it a lot too. One of the best scenes is when Steve is trying to get Diana drunk at the Rusty Nail. He gets sloshed and she doesn't.

I don't know much about the comic book Wonder Woman as I didn't read them and only saw the Lynda Carter/Lyle Waggoner TV series.
