Likes to mess with stuffs.

Ratings are in for last night's episode:

http://www.shinyuniverse.net/news.aspx?nid=186

Also have a couple of polls.

What do you think is the cause of Dollhouse's poor ratings?
http://www.shinyuniverse.net/poll.aspx?pid=8

Will Joss bring in any of his "Hat Trick" (Jonathan M. Woodward, Carlos Jacott ) actors for guest appearances in the first season of Dollhouse?

I have to say that I really enjoyed the first two episodes, but could only make it through the first 20 minutes or so of last nights. I found that I just didn't care enough to actually watch the whole thing. NOT a normal atate of mind regarding something from the JossVerse

I agree that the show started kind "eh," but had 3 REALLY COOL/IMPORTANT bits in it. Plus, it really picked up later.

I think the reason for the poor ratings is nothing new: FOX sucks at marketing shows as the shows that they actually are.

For instance, WHY have they thrown away, "You can wipe away a memory. Can you wipe away a soul?" That's the whole POINT of the show!!

After last week, both Dollhouse and Terminator were beginning to lose me. Last night didn't help much either.

I'm liking Dollhouse. I missed the first 15 minutes and watched it on Hulu. While I'm not too sure what I think about the FBI guy, the evolution of Echo and now Sienna have me curious to see where the storyline is going. If the ratings don't pick up we may never know.

I have to admit that I just haven't been able to get into the Terminator series.

This episode was pretty painful to get through. I just didn't care about any of the characters. IMO they need to work the FBI character into the story with the other characters pronto. Having his story going on separately from everyone else really makes it feel disjointed.

As for the main characters in the Dollhouse I don't care about any of them yet either. Echo's handler is the closest to being a character I could care about, but we still don't know anything real about him. Everyone is just a paper thin shell of a character at this point. They fit into their nice shrink wrapped packages "the mean security guy", "the loyal protector guy", "the caring doctor lady", "the blunt boss lady", "the nerdy computer guy". This is not what I expect from Joss. Normally he only has characters in those roles for about 5 seconds before he has them throwing preconceived notions aside.

It's to the point where I'm telling people I introduced to Firefly not to watch (those who haven't yet). I don't want them to think Firefly was a fluke for Joss.

Those are sort of a tough sell. Firefly is fairly adult themed. Buffy is much more high schooler, teenie bopper type material. Angel is reliant on Buffy. Dr. Horrible is campy. I don't think they're for everyone. Where with Firefly I feel like if someone really sits down and watches it they'd have to be a robot not to enjoy it.

Agreed.

I would fall into the category you're describing. I didn't really like Buffy or Angel; Dr. Horrible was good. I'm a total Firefly geek, read/own everything I can about the show, and think it's an absolute masterpiece (for the most part).

Dollhouse is just...not good. I don't blame FOX for this at all...yes it's on Fridays, yes the marketing has been iffy, but even if they ran adverts 24/7 it wouldn't change the fact that it's just NOT A GOOD SHOW. So far it's been formulaic, predictable, and uninteresting for me.

That would be quite sad if they couldn't see what's right in front of them. Just because a show is deep doesn't mean it's not a high schooler, teenie bopper show.

If a disney cartoon has innuendo that adults pick up on does that make it a movie for adults? No, it's still a kids movie. It's just got some entertainment value for the adults.

As far as Buffy goes, it's Joss Whedon's crowning achievement so back off.

Agreed. But don't write off Dollhouse just yet, my friend. True, it's no Dark Angel, but I see much potential there.

If it was at least as good as the first season of DA, I'd be digging it. It's not.

This is the first Joss show that isn't "must see". At least for myself.

I actually like Dollhouse. I think the concept is interesting. I think it could go in many entertaining directions. I even liked Stage Fright. I liked the twist that Echo was 'protecting' the singer by putting her in danger.

I like Echo and want to learn her backstory. I felt bad for her in the first episode when they did her first treatment and took away the man of her dreams (well, the person that she was at that point). And why the heck would Alpha not slaughter her...what's his connection. I'm pretty hooked...as you can see. Sure, it's not up to par with the other Jossverse stuff YET...but I think it has potential.

One thing that you CAN feel, though, is the producers striving to create episodes that are watchable on their own, while still having 'mythology.' Joss has always been criticized for complex shows (that get cancelled) that are hard for newcomers to break into. Dollhouse is has potential for that...but there's also the Law & Order you-can-watch-one-episode-and-not-be-completely-lost thing going on. They are stories unto themselves and therefore, if a newbie were to watch (if they get a chance)...you wouldn't have to spend 45 minutes explaining things to them. They could enjoy the show without all the backstory.

But I guess I'm in a minority.

And could Friday night be a worse place for a new show? I'm watching on hulu.

I like Buffy and own all the DVDs, but I'd rank it behind both Firefly and Angel.

I'd rate Buffy behind Firefly, but not Angel. And I'd rate Dark Angel about equal to Buffy.
Dollhouse (so far) hasn't equaled Angel.

I'm Buffy, Firefly, Angel. Haven't seen Dark Angel and waiting for Dollhouse to gain some momentum before judging.

Maybe you just misread it. I assure you I'm still smart. :-P

Though for the first time I'm starting to doubt Joss. It's a sad and scary world. Every night I go home and curl into a ball in the corner and mumble, "please get better" over and over while rocking back and forth.

I'll have to say I am disappointed in Dollhouse so far. It has really cool, slick packaging, the lead is really hot and the premise is pretty good... but the writing and plotwork so far are just way below what I was hoping for. Firefly is my alltime favorite show, as it is for most of the folks here, and it saddens me that this is Joss' comeback. I have heard that he has already been butting heads with Fox about premise of the show, they wanted more guns and blood while he wanted it to be more of a thinking piece. This last episode with the 'Beyonce' clone was truly horrible... oh, well. They can't take the sky from me anyway...
