Moench & Gulacy's recent Master Of Kung Fu, a collection of the 6 issue miniseries, is AWESOME!!! It's like a Bond movie with more main characters!

Watchmen is obviously a great one (I loved it)...and I've read that League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is excellent...any others Browncoats can recommend?

For the more whimsical, Neil Gaiman is good. Well-written, well drawn.

V for Vendetta is a fantastic read.

In regards to Neil Gaiman, I recently read Preludes and Nocturnes, the first book in his Sandman series. Amazing, and confusing, and something of a tease.

Currently reading the Fray collection, (yes, yes, I know I'm late with that one, quiet you) and I'm loving it. And that's only one issue in!

Other than that, I recommend 30 Days of Night (I've so far only read the original) and The Fountain. Yes, the movie with Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz, but the graphic novel is based on Darren Aronofsky's original idea which wasn't simplified for budget's sake. Beautiful art.

And, of course, the Angel, Buffy and Firefly comics. Fantastic.

And a few of the Hellboy ones.

And for anyone who is game enough to read a VERY messed up comic, Crossed, by Garth Ennis is going at the moment, and is incredibly messed up. Unlike something like Hostel (which I hated) however, it's also relatively creative and smart, and the fact that it's a comic helps dull the line to reality slightly.

I know what you're thinking...and no, I'm not a nerd. Well, ok, I am, but I like it that way.

:)

Watchmen, V For Vendetta are must reads.
Gaiman is almost a must read. The Sandman series is an obvious one but also his other stuff - Wolves In The Wall (aimed at kids but still good), Marvel 1602, Violent Cases.
Moore's The Killing Joke if you like Batman and Miller's The Dark Knight Returns.

These are my faves.

The 10 novel collection of Sandman remains my favorite since the 90's when I first read it. Yes Preludes and Nocturnes is slightly muddled. Gaiman himself said that he was trying to find his voice as he wrote it. By the time one gets to Seasons of the Mist, the writting is astonishingly strong and some of the greatest stories I've ever read are contained in the later editions.

Ramadan - in Book 5 Fables and Reflections
Golden Boy - in Book 8 worlds End
And my all time Gaiman favorite:

Exiles - in Book 10, The Wake.

Please don't judge the series by Preludes and Nocturnes. It would be identical to judging Buffy on the strength of season 1 alone.

I am by no means a graphic novel expert, but I have a few I've run across (most recommended by MWP) and have enjoyed greatly. Here are some of them:

Fray I love that series.
30 Days of Night
Y: The Last Man Controversial yes, but most of the women are believable creations.
The Walking Dead Good zombie story. We learned about this one at Heroes con.
My first 'graphic novel' as opposed to comic book was The Crow. You know what they say about your first.

If you think I meant that I disliked P&N, that isn't the case. Yes it was slightly muddled, but at the same time it was a very interesting read and I'm looking forward to reading the rest. Glad to hear it gets astonishingly brilliant.

That said, I did judge Buffy on the first season alone. I'm ashamed to say that before Firefly I'd only seen bits and pieces of Buffy and had though it looked quite silly (I assumed it was similar to Charmed, which I'd been made to watch and had disliked). After Firefly I decided to check it out, so I rented the first season, thinking I'd watch an episode and then return it, having wasted my time.
I watched the entire first season in 2 days, then went and bought all 7 seasons.

Might do the same with Sandman.

Edit: 22Claws, I was looking at Death:HCoL the other day, thinking it looked very interesting. I might go pick it up at some stage.

That was me too, I watched some fragments and didn't want to watch it AT ALL. With Hulu though I've watched nearly 3 seasons during late night stints at College and I seriously need to scrounge up the cash to buy me some used DVD copies (waaay too poor to buy new) that way I can start the comics.

Y: The Last Man is also great series

The Runaways, though about a group of kids is a great concept and I think wonderfully written. It's a great take on the Marvel universe and has a very Jossian flavor to it (doesn't help that he did a small arch on it). Harvey Award winner as well as an Eisner.

Joss's Astonishing X-Men is my favorite X-Men arch currently. The storytelling's brilliant, Cassidy's artwork is to die for and yes I love it just a little bit more than the Firefly comics.

Blacksad by Juan Díaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido is a huge favorite of mine. Wonderful film noir (three Eisner noms for the writing) with Guarnido's great anthropamorphic art. It can be tricky to find in the states because the writer and artist are Spainish and primarily release the book in French (where is has a massive fanbase), but I think it's worth it.

Another anthro comic to mention is Lackadaisy by Tracy J. Butler. It's a free webcomic that revolves around a bunch of cats in St. Louis Missouri that *try* to run a speakeasy during prohibition. For a free webcomic, the artwork is stunningly detailed and the writing is spot on. Butler's garnered a few awards for the comic, 07-08 Web Cartoonists Choice Awards.

Anything from Neil Gaimen, Frank Miller, Michael Eisener naturally.

Oh...let's see.

I'll have to say The Tick Omnibus #1 (or Monday through Sunday). If you know anything about superhero comics, this will be hilarhious.

Identity Crisis by DC. Brad Metzler (sp-huh), and Rags Morales. Consequently, the trade paperback has an introduction by Joss Whedon, but if you're easily offended by Woman in Refrigerator syndrome, you might want to skip it.

Batman/Superman - Supergirl. The reintroduction of Supergirl after Infinite Crisis. Just an old fashioned superhero comic with a few little twists along the way. Gorgeous art by Michael Turner (whose style should have pissed me off, but he grew on me...Sorry to see he's gone now)

Any of the Ultimate Spiderman TPBs...Everything you love about Spiderman...Concentrate!

Walking Dead, Stardust (Neil Gaiman, though very, very hard to find, but available to everyone if you know where to look), Batman: Year One, Batgirl: Year One, All of Astonishing vol 1...(forget the new one), 30 Days of Night, Y: The Last Man, Fray...

And...If I can recommend just one, it would have to be Scott Pilgrim. I just read this a couple of nights ago. There's a proposed seven volumes, and only one is published a year. They're up to volume 4 now. Very, very fun book.

I'll have to have a look at what I have here and get back to you.

Not sure I'd go that far, but... worth a read for sure.

You know, I love The Fountain (one of my alltime favourite films) but I keep forgetting its a graphic novel too. I've definitely got to keep an lookout for that.

For me, I've definitely got to throw in a couple of Superman stories:
Secret Identity (which tells the tale of a kid named Clark Kent by his parents, something he gets teased about often, but who finds he actually isn't that far different from the character of Superman himself. It really is fantastic.
Red Sun, tells the What-if tale of Superman's ship landing in Russia instead of the state of Kansas. Really interesting stuff.
(also, whilst we're on the subject of superman, the one-off Batman/Superman issue (think it was 36) written by the late Sam Loeb is definitely worth a read)

Also Brian Micahel Bendis' run on Daredevil is amazing. Along with Whedon's X-men, it got me hooked on comics again

As has been mentioned, I'd recommend anything written by Niel Gaiman, with The Sandman being his signature work. Can't recommend it enough.

I also have the full runs of Preacher and Transmetropolitan.

The Fountain graphic novel isn't that different from the film, even though the back cover goes on about it being "the ultimate director's cut" and such. But the ART! It's magnificent. If you love the film, it's definitely worth having.

hey,
figured I'd bump this instead of making a new thread.
I'm going to go out and buy some TPB's to keep me busy reading. Now that I'm back at uni, I find that reading stuff definitely helps my imagination keep going and helps me write scripts and such.
So I need some help.
My list consists of the following:
* The Walking Dead
* Sandman
* Death: High Cost of Living
* Runaways
* Astonishing X-Men
* Scott Pilgrim (mainly interested due to the upcoming film to be directed by Edgar Wright)
* Pride of Baghdad
* Blood: A Tale (mainly interested because of the art by Kent Williams)
* Ex Machina
* Death and Return of Superman

I'd love if anyone could give me opinions on any of these works, as these are ones I've seen that I'm interested in. Also, if you know of anything else similar which is better, let me know of that too!

For an idea of what I own:
* Watchmen
* V for Vendetta (thought this was better than Watchmen tbh)
* The Fountain
* Angel: After the Fall
* Buffy S8
* Serenity
* Y: The Last Man
* The Darkness
* Wanted

As you can see, I don't have an extensive collection, although I'd love to change that.

Wow..long thread, but yeah, I trust the opinions of you guys, so I'd really appreciate any help at all.

Cheers!

I stand by my opinion of Neil Gaiman's works expressed higher on this thread. Another graphic you haven't listed but could consider is Stardust. The story is wonderful. The crappy movie made from it...not so much. Stardust reads more like a novel, with artwork on each page that scrolls or wraps itself around the text.

Additionally I own and frequently enjoy The Dream Hunters by Gaiman. It is also told in a text fashion with artwork adjacent. Here's a couple links if you are curious.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stardust_(novel)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dream_Hunters

Beyond Gaiman, I find myself collecting the Conan series of novels by Dark Horse. Although at times Conan can get slightly campy, their re-telling of Robert Howard's classic The Tower of the Elephant was supurb.

*Edit* For some reason that stardust link keeps coming in as broken. That final parentheses won't collect with the yellow of the link. If you type it into your browser at the end it'll link properly.

I tried to read League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and had trouble getting into it. This from someone who owns Watchmen and V for Vendetta. And of course Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is also excellent. I took a class on graphic novels and actually enjoyed some of the borderline non-fiction ones I read.

Maus, Vol. 1 and 2 by Art Spiegelman. (intriguing and moving portrayal of Jews trying to survive in Holocaust Germany. The Jews are shown as mice and the Germans are shown as cats.)

Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. (Coming of age journey of a young girl raised in Iran during the revolution and trying to cope with the stunning changes the country went through)

Safe Area Gorazde by journalist Joe Sacco. (Check this one out if you can! Not only do you read an accurate account of went on during the war in Bosnia for the survivors--think Independents trying to eke out an existence after Unification--you see it with stunning clarity through the eyes of a brilliant artist/author. The humanity expressed here is so genuine.)

Thanks guys.

BSCM:
Well, I've actually seen Stardust the movie, and I actually quite enjoyed the damn thing! The trailers and such made it look horrible, went and saw the film, and it was quite extraordinary, so I should definitely give the novel a try. The problem is I've only seen it in this 'limited edition hardback' or something that is rather expensive, but I'll see what I can do.

CellarDoor:
I've read Dark Knight Returns and Persepolis, and rather enjoyed both of those. (Also saw the film of Persepolis which was fairly brilliant!)

But I shall definitely try Maus, as it's always intruiged me, and I shall look out for Safe Area Gorazde.

And of course, instead of narrowing my list down, I've now made it longer! Damn the need for money!!
Though..it's my birthday this Monday...so I shall treat myself. :)

I can't recommend Preacher and Transmetropolitan highly enough either.

Likewise Gaiman's Sandman, though I have not read much of that yet.

Most of the usual suspects have been mentioned and are also excellent, I started with The Dark Knight Returns and never looked back (though for goodness sake do not bother with DKRII - it is utterly appallingly bad apart from some bits in the first issue. How does Miller manage to write both classic and superb stuff like Ronin, TDKR, Batman Year 1, Sin City and then produce a POS like TDKR2?)

Buffy S8 is good. Both Firefly TPBs (I have the originals also) are pretty good too, though mainly due to subject and it being Joss: they don't hold up to the likes of Watchmen, Preacher, Transmet etc

Nick
