If you liked V for Vendetta at all, yeah, pick it up.

Besides, if you don't care for it, you can pawn it off on someone as a christmas gift, lol.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Most definitely buy it. I've seen it twice through Netflix, and I've had it on my wish list at amazon for a long time but I thought its inital release price was a bit steep. For $4.99 I might just pick up two copies.

Also, have you read the book? Probably Philip K. Dick's strangest novel, and that's saying a lot.

Man, was that a good flick! I loved the part where Keanu fought all of those Agent Smiths!
Oh wait- wrong movie...

No, A Scanner Darkly was thoughtful & measured, a very textured character piece. The acting was excellent from the entire cast, and it was funny to see Woody Harrelson in it- he & Keanu once had a friendly tussle concerning whether Keanu really did know kung-fu after makin' The Matrix (turned out he did!).
I liked it a lot, it was similar in tone (for me) to A Clockwork Orange, except that I didn't hate the protagonist. The druggie-talk/logic was hi-larious.
And it looked great.
A genuine keeper!

Good movie. First time I saw it, was after ingesting some... magical fungus thangs.... not exactly something I'd recommend for this particular movie, even if it was thematically appropriate.

Yep, that's the "power trio" allright, V for Vendetta, A Scanner Darkly and Gattica, all sitting in a tight little cluster on the top shelf of my DVD rack - Equilibrium and Demolition Man are a good fourth and fifth to backstop with, but I been too lazy to dig em up, lol.

Definitely.

I would substitute Matrix for Equilibrium, though, Bale's little paranoia movie left we somewhat wanting in the realism department...'Gun-Fu'? I'd buy that we were all batteries first.

Just a note...

No 'I' in GATTACA...

The name GATTACA occurs in genetic sequences because there are only 4 letters available...

A , C , G , and T.

It's an awesome , underappreciated , subtle , and cerebral film...

Chris, what the draw for me in Equilibrium was, has naught to do with the whole gun-fu biz.

Being emotionally muted and watching all the trouble folks feelings getting the better of em caused in middle/high school, for a time I really did think that *was* the answer.

I grew out of it, realizing our humanity is a treasure rather than a weakness, and many years later got to see Equilibrium - which made it's impact all the more striking when combined with "Wow, and once, I was stupid enough to think that would work, too..."

The real meat is the story, and the gun-fu stuff is just a gratuitous add-on to widen it's appeal to the action movie crowd - I'd rather that they spent that time and effort on his backstory, like what happened with his wife and kids in more detail.

Still a good flick though.

I may give Equilibrium another chance one of these days. It is one of only two movies that I got from Netflix that I never finished watching. Can't remember the other one right now, which is probably a good thing.

I haven't seen A Scanner Darkly, but I am a huge fan of Richard Linklater so I'm going to have to see it at some point.

Three of my favorite Linklater movies:

-Dazed and confused

-Slacker

-Before Sunrise

Do you guys dig his work also?

Dazed and Confused is great. Linklater once stated in an interview he loved growing up in Texas in the 70's. So much so he had to share the good times he had with an audience, and that is why became a filmmaker.

Also, Before Sunrise is the best work I have ever seen from Ethan Hawke. It's a pretty awe inspiring film.

What about Robert Downey Jr's performance in A Scanner Darkly?
My favorite part was the bit with the mountain bike, where there's some confusion as to how many speeds the bike actually has (see, the trick is to multiply the front and rear gears, not add them!)...

And there's a scene in Equilibrium that chokes me up every time: When the un-dosed Preston peels the covering off the window and sees his first sunrise — and it overwhelms him to the point where he rushes off to dose himself.

Linklater is probably the most under-appreciated writer/director these days. I have the three you mentioned, as well as Before Sunset, Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly. I've also have seen SubUrbia, which is pretty good (but he didn't write it), and School of Rock and Bad News Bears were good for that type of film, but he deserves better.

I think he will have his day in the sun someday. Someone as talented as he is can't stay under the radar their entire career....at least I hope not.
