I never even HEARD of 'Hell Boy' before the first movie came out, and now it's got a 2nd movie ??

wtf ?

Don't get me wrong, I'm cool w/ Ron Pearlman, and the story was decent enough. I kinda like it, even. But the 1st movie wasn't up the the level of PITCH BLACK, imo, and that got a 2nd shot at the box office w/ another movie..... why the heck not SERENITY ???

NEEDY

The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

I can understand where you're coming from. There's been plenty of films of late that have got sequels which were either not needed, or not deserved
Of course personal opinion differs but I can't understand why movies like Tomb Raider and National Treasure get to make another (yes, they probably made money, but lets face it, they were awful)
Hellboy on the other hand is a little different and I'm glad it got a sequel. I enjoyed the first movie (not as much as some, but still) and Del Toro has made a good ame for himself lately - esp after pan's labyrinth
Plus, Hellboy is a comic book movie, which are seriously IN right now

Serenity is, right or not, considered a small cult movie, and apart from good word of mouth, didn't make a huge splash.
Still, I sincerely hope that at the very least we can get a straight to dvd sequel - there's all sorts of trash made for that medium, but still people eat it up. I predict that if there was a dvd sequel, it would be bigger than anyone imagined

As Serenity exposed me to Firefly and all the wonderful Browncoats, I had seen Hellboy comics years ago but never really got the chance to read. Besides, pitching another Hellboy movie with all of it's creative minds and original backers agreeing what they want might actually work out a bit more than a flick that requires some fight to have made.

Besides, isn't the fight we put up for our movie so much more worth another flick that is being produced for the unknowing masses?

The visuals for the movie look so damn pretty though. Plus - elven fundamentalist freedom fighter. WTF? It makes a nice change from watching some A/M/W belting out some Beyonce bollox, a some deadass 'comedian' pratting about, or some plank of wood with a pretty face enunciating in front of tacky CGI.

(And Ron Perlman is a Cobb.)

Hells yeah.

I'd even consider Red as an honourary Browncoat (he's a sarcastic rebel and social outcast, who fights the bad guys while wearing an actual brown coat). He and Mal (and Jayne, and probably even Wash) would probably get along great (and Kaylee, for that matter, considering Hellboy's fondness for kittens and cute things).

I was pretty amazed when Hellboy got made. It was based on one of my favorite comic books and my favorite things rarely get the blockbuster treatment. I can definitely see its connection with Firefly on some level. What that level is exactly, I'm having trouble pinning down. Not quite genre, not quite theme--atmosphere? Mood? Attitude? Hellboy himself is very much Mal and Jayne put together. The thing I always liked about the Hellboy comics was how seriously they took the supernatural and how personal the stories were. Just as I found Joss' approach to Sci-fi in Firefly refreshingly serious and personal (kinda sums up my disappointment in the BDM--less serious, less personal).

The movie of Hellboy itself was just sorta okay, compared to the original material, so I can totally understand the "wtf." From what I've read about this new one though, it sounds like it will be a far more authentically Hellboyesque experience, so I'll be very interested to hear your review of Hellboy 2 when you see it, AUR.

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

I had a feeling someone would bring that up, and it's a valid enough point. But Hellboy stated from obscurity with its first movie, and our BDH's at least had a t.v. series that preceded its movie premier.

Just frustratin' is all

"Obscurity"??

I think Mike Mignola and millions of comic book fans all over the world would take issue with that term. ^^

Firefly had a series that nearly no one watched, which is much closer to "obscurity" than Hellboy.

Simply put, Hellboy is getting a sequel because of its ability to make money, not necessarily because it's a higher quality franchise. Hollywood is all about numbers, and they speak for themselves:

HELLBOY - Budget $66M, opening weekend $23M, worldwide total $99.3M
SERENITY - Budget $39M, opening weekend $10M, worldwide total $38.9M

It's frustrating, sure, but it happens all the time. =(

Kitten, I'd never heard of Hellboy myself, thus I used 'obscurity' as an apt term, from my point of view.

While I enjoy Sci-Fi, I'm not all that much a geek-boy. Comics weren't really my 'thing', but for a short time.

Oh, no, I understand.
(While appreciating the art, I never read Hellboy, myself.)
I was just kinda pointing out that obscurity is relative... ^__^
...and that if Hollywood was paid in awesome vibes instead of cash, we'd have several Serenity sequels.

Tot, MSB, I have to say I'm lookin forward to HB2 my own self. As I read it, this movie will be even more true to the HB 'verse, as it were, than the first one.... though I'm not sure why. Del Toro directed the first movie as well. As I stated before, I'm sorta a fan of Ron Pearlman, and really like Selma Blair too.

Seems Agent John Myers , was to take over for the gravely ill Professor Bruttenholm, does not make a repeat performance in HB2.

And yet the dead Professor does. Huh.

REGINAROADIE

I saw this last night, and I absolutely LOVED it. I wasn't too big a fan of the first film, and personally I felt PAN'S LABRYNTH was a bit overrated. But this film took the best qualities of the first, jettisoned some of the weaker bits, and just went into overdrive. It really did feel like you were seeing all these monsters coming alive, as well as just getting deeper into the quartet that makes up the B.P.R.D. I thought it was funny as Hell to see Abe and Hellboy getting drunk and bemoaning their love lives and Johann Krauss using the locker doors to kick Hellboy's ass. And Del Toro's child like reverence towards fantasy and the underworld made the ending that more poignant. That whole "when we die, the world will be poorer for it."

The only tiny quibble I have with the film is that David Hyde Pierce didn't voice Abe again. I was glad to see Doug Jones get full credit for Abe, and he tells a great story on how Hyde Pierce with the first film didn't take the credit since he felt that him voicing Abe was superfluous given the great job Doug Jones did. But part of me did miss the idea of Niles Crane, Action Hero. Of course, getting Seth McFarlane to do Krauss made up for it a bit.

Other than that, this is a sequel that is FAR better than the original.

SINGATE

A highly entertaining and visually spectacular movie. Del Toro really knows how to paint a vivid picture. With what he has done in these movies I'm really hoping he gets a crack at Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness. I know he's been trying for a few years and I can defintely see some Lovecraftian inspired creatures in both Hellboy installments.

Speaking of inspired characters I couldn't help but be reminded of Moorcock's Elric when the prince first showed up in Hellboy 2. Kudos to the actor who portrayed him as well. I don't know his name but I'm pretty sure it's the same guy who played the head reaper in Blade 2, which is another Del Toro film. This guy really knows how to play the tortured, almost sympathetic villain.

Talk about your visual feast!

That said, HB2 seemed more del Toro-esque and less Mignola-esque than the first; didn't seem quite as collaborative visually. It does have all those touches such as the clockwork mechanisms, though.

And hooray Doug Jones and Brian Steele! Suit actors are finally getting their due (Doug Jones even gets third billing this time!).

Ron doesn't quite fit in this category despite all the suit acting he's done, because he's also done a heck of a lot of roles without prosthetics and can be readily recognised on the street (I mean, how many average moviegoers could pick Brian Steele out of a lineup?).

Don't want to hot-link, so add your own http://ww to

to get an idea of what he looks like when he's not playing Wink or Sammael the Hell Hound.

And here's one of Doug Jones:

You're right SinGate, Luke Goss played Nomak in Blade II, and I agree also about the tortured villain thing. Both characters were so sympathetic that you ached for them at the same time as you were appalled by the badness.

here's a pic of him, also with the
