Hey Igor,

I thought it was a given that everybody loves Serenity here (well, there are a few that go another way, but we won't mention them in this thread) and, in my mind, there is no right or wrong answer.

I loves me some Serenity (my pet peeves not withstanding) but you like what you like. I mentioned 2001 in my post because of its classic status and, like the BDM, its totally awesome storytelling. Like you said the total package is there. Serenity also pays homage to 2001 by the use of silence in space, music and how mankind reacts to the black. Both movies explore man's place in the scheme of things - the idea that a machine could help humans live better; and the idea that a drug could have us living in a world without sin. Great stuff on both counts.

So having said that - here's my official support of the BDM - Serenity. It now holds a prominent place among my DVD collection (soon to be joined by a Blu-Ray version). Every time I see it I find something that I missed before (a sign of a great movie). At one time it was the original Matrix with its multifacited themes, but Serenity has elbowed its way past and firmly planted itself squarely on the mountain of iconic science fiction lore.

To Jewelstaitefan:

You've come up with another gem! Galaxy Quest. A kinda guilty pleasure for both my son and I (we coonsider ourselves serious sci-fi fans - yeah, right!).

I took my son to see this movie when it came out in 1999 and we loved it. It poked fun at the ST/SW fans and sci-fi geeks everywhere, but it also paid homage to them at the same time. I don't know, that's what I got from it.

[wonderful job by Sigourney Weaver, as well as Alan Richman, Tony Shaloub, and even Tim Allen doing better than I expected.]

I agree with the above, but let's not forget the HI-larious job done by Enrico Colantoni (the photographer from Just Shoot Me) who played the alien Mathesar. His performance had me in stitches, especially when he did his "laugh."

Shiny! Let's be bad guys!

"Those poor people!"

Hahahaha....I'm a big Questarian.
I personally consider it sci-fi, for the reasons that JSF stated.

But the best sci-fi movie of all time?

Probably Serenity for me.

Subjective-Blade Runner. It never gets old, just better. I have the dvd with 5 versions of the film, and I like all of them.

Objective-Aliens. James Cameron, you did what no else could do. You made a sequel that was superior to the original. Not an easy task with the first one being a masterpiece, and all.

GAH! the Clooney version sucks so bad that my brother got himself a job as a film reviewer just to slag it off!

it's awful!

on the other hand - maybe that's just me and my bro (IOOHO!) but if you like stalker, check out Tarkovsky's first - and read the book... then make the comparison.

oh and in case no/one's mentioned it -
i'll shout for 12 Monkeys.
love it.

yeah i find captain oates a very intresting modern hero of folklaw and the fact that he is perrenially blamed for the mistakes of the mission and i believe that scotts account is untrue to add some heroics to a guy they really wanted to get rid of . i have already read road side picnic and loved it and thought the film adaptaion with the help of the original writers the stugatsky brothers to be one of the finest scififilms ever made and my favourite scifi film of all time oh and hey im no inker

im just going out,i may be some time

OOOhhhhhhh Kaaaaaayyyyyyyy.
Now that the thread starter who banned lists has started the making of lists,
Subjective Top 5: Galaxy Quest, Road Warrior, Twelve Monkeys, Highlander, Terminator II: Judgement Day. (If Highlander doesn't count as SciFi, then Waterworld).

Objective Top 5: Star Wars, Aliens, Armageddon, Bladerunner, Terminator.

PIZMOBEACH

... fully loaded, safety off...

I would love to say "Star Wars - the first one... uh, the first one made," but the ones that followed put such a bitter pall over the whole series that I just can't. It was such a joy to watch when it first came out, the effects were a generation more special than previous scifi fare. Perhaps even better; it expanded the scifi fan base by, oh, say, a couple Billion people.
Subjectively: Alien is my fav. No, wait! Aliens. Great story, great fx, great villain, great heroine, great music, great supporting cast. I guess all of those apply to both.

Objectively: 2001. It felt like it was one of the first mature scifi movies made. Before it came around they could be pretty silly. So it opened up the genre to a wider audience and helped it to be considered a lot more seriously. From there better writers, directors and studios showed interest in working on or making scifi films. All while leaving room for Ice Pirates!
