STAPLES

I've been waiting for this movie for several years now, and I was greatly dissappointed. I read the grapgic novel, which was pretty good, but the movie was pretty much...bad, for lack of a better word.

Richard Kelley is an amazing director, and he tries to have an astoundingly deep meaning in his films (so far just Southland Tales and Donnie Darko...), but I think the fatal flaw of Southland Tales was that he tried to cram WAY too much into it. He tried to bring up every single issue into the movie - religion, politics, renewable energy, and every other thing you could think of.

On top of that, the cast was pretty much bad. Sarah Michelle Gellar was a good choice for the character she played, and Justin Timberlake wasn't too bad, but the rest of the cast pretty much terrible. The performance from Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson made me cringe, and the wrap-up of the film made me stand out of my chair and say, "What the F*$%??!!"

Overall, if you LOVE Donnie Darko or Richard Kelley, it's worth a watch. Also, it's fairly funny and entertaining. I don't suggest you waste your money buying it.

Worth a rental for the hardcore fan, otherwise, steer clear.

Just my opinion - hope this helps :)

I second that emotion. I *love* Donnie Darko (but I'm still not sure I *get* it!), but Southland Tales just left me cold.

There are some great ideas, flashes of greatness that could've rivaled Brazil or Blade Runner - and they were handled so hamfistedly that they came across more like Johnny Mnemonic. The cast was a train wreck - Booger from "Better Off Dead"? Wallace Shawn? The Rock? The dialog, in places where it should have been profound, was just inane blather. "I'm a pimp; a pimp would NEVER commit suicide." Seriously? By the end of the movie (and it FELT longer than it was), *I* was considering going sideways...

I can't in earnestness recommend it, but if you want to see it, I can't really say NOT to, either. It's a trainwreck, all right, but a fairly glorious trainwreck. Justin Timberlake is probably the HIGH point of the movie - he's actually turning out to be a good actor. Who'd've thunk it?

i thought this was a very imaginative film - but i like the quirky stuff much better than car chases and fist fights... so if you can't sit through a film without giving it your full attention, this one may not be for you.. it scored pretty low at Cannes in '06... but dawg... it really is kinda cool...
Here are a few quotes from the movie.. i've decided it's a comedy after all..

Quote:

Cyndi Pinziki: Nothing an eight ball, a porn star and a tattoo parlor can't handle.

Boxer Santaros: I'm a pimp... and pimps don't commit suicide.

Martin Kefauver: It says transaction denied, dawg!

Zora Carmichaels: You know... there would be a lot less voilence in the world if everyone just got a little more cardio.

Krysta Now: (Sara M Gellar) Scientists are saying the future is going to be far more futuristic than they originally predicted.

Boxer Santaros: The fourth dimension will collapse upon itself... you stupid bitch.

Fortunio Balducci: Anyone who knows anything of history knows that great social changes are impossible without feminine upheaval.

Veronica Mung: Just 'cause it's loud doesn't mean it's funny!
from IMDb

watch it a couple times - it'll grow on you...

What a crazy movie. I don't know if I even like it or not, but I recommend y'all see it. It's definitely different, and ya can't say that about MOST films.
Plus, Buffy fans- it's a must...

DEADLOCKVICTIM

Something about this movie keeps bugging me...

The line by Zelda Rubinstein (Dr. Katarina Kuntzler in the film - you know, the short woman who was also in thePoltergeist movies..)

Shadows of the morning light the shadows of the evening sun till the shadows and the light were one...

I thought I had heard this before.. and sure enough, there it is on the soundtrack - a song by Jane's Addiction called Three Days - so i looked up the complete lyrics and tried to understand why Richard Kelly thought this was so significant.

I must be missing something, cause i just don't see the tie-in to the subject matter of the movie. So, and I'm just guessing here, Kelly must have really liked that song and wanted to use something from it in his movie...??!??

any thoughts??
