i'm old.. no, i didn't see the movie when it was released in 1954, but as a kid growing up in the '60's i was a monster movie fan, and Creature was one of my favorites - i may have been young, but i just knew that there was something cool about swimming around all day and picking up girls in one piece bathing suits....

anyway, Ben Chapman, the Creature, died recently and i found this photo of him in that famous suit - sans mask... if you can find an obit of the man, it makes for some interesting reading.

and here is Ben in action...

a little trivia about CFTBL.... there were two creatures - Ben Chapman was in all the scenes shot on the sound stage and back lot at Universal Studios in Hollywood and a stuntman - Ricou Browning played the creature in all the underwater scenes that were shot in Wakulla Springs, Florida. Neither man was listed in the credits of the movie.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Sad news. Loved the Creature movies as a kid. Have them on dvd now and my kids like them.

R.I.P.

CFTBL was the first Super-8 movie I bought from Castle Films (Universal's home movie outlet back in the day), and I played that 12 minute version a million times!

Thanks for the thrills, Ben!

Oh very sad to hear Ben Chapman passed away. Creature was one of my absolute 1st and favourite 50's monster movies that I ever watched.

Back in the early 80's there was a brief fad with 3D on the TV. With the purchase of the Radio Times you received a pair of free 3D glasses in order to watch The Creature From The Black Lagoon in 3D!. It was a right hoot! A precursor to my love for 50's sci-fi and monster movies which continues today

Select to view spoiler:

(I recently watched Cloverfield with absolute delight!)

By sheer chance when I was at art college in Canterbury, the University cinema (seating approx 200 people) showed a 3D double bill. Creature from the Black Lagoon and It Came From Outer Space! Man it was fantastic! One of the best cinema experiences I've ever had. Everyone was really into it, and the atmosphere was superb! We spent about 4 hours afterwards talking about the two films, both directed by Jack Arnold. They're classics anyway, but if you ever have the chance to enjoy them in 3D I recommend it. The experience is all the more fantastic, especially the underwater scenes!

R.I.P. Ben Chapman.

I believe that Creature suit was used again in a later movie called The Monster of Piedras Blancas....not as good as "Creature" but not too bad either.
