I was mesmerized.
2 was go-se mostly, but 3 was awesome.
Depp in the locker was especially cool and bizarre.

I was just a little underwhelmed with the denouement for Calypso but otherwise yes a movie that did not disappoint.

I've yet to see it. Blockbuster should send it soon enough though. Thanks for the reminder.

I was just so completely let down by the second one...it seemed to go on and on with no purpose, only picking up a little by the end.
This one just starts into it, demanding that ye be up to speed!
Chow Yun Fat turns in a good performance too, as always.

I liked all three. One was awesome, two was great though it has it's slow points and three was the worst of the series but it's still better than most movies that came out this year. Only points that make it the least of the three are: Chow Yun Fat was way underused, the looks into the mind of Jack Sparrow ranged from plain juvenile to downright weird and the movie was almost too swiftly paced with very little story to back up some of the new characters and plot devices. Other than that I do agree that it was an awesome movie and look forward to possibly getting the movie for Christmas.

I commented about Pirates 3 in the "I threw my hands in despair and stormed out ..." thread. Here were and are my views:

Pirates ... :At World's End

The last 2 1/2 hours of this 3+ hour epic piece of convoluted crap made question whether I would ever watch another movie again. It started with Depp's acid trip induced jaunt through "World's End". Then having the only piece of female eye candy (Kiera Knightly) wearing an asian inspired tent and pointy hat throughout the whole movie angered me even further.

At last the final sword fight on the mast that was going down a friggin massive whirlpool was just stupid. I wish I could be more eloquent about the level of stupidity that was reached during that scene, but I can't.

The most massive waste of well-done CG effects in the history of western civilization. Three Serenity sequels could have been made with what was spent on this steaming pile of excrement. I feel dumber for having sat through this vapid pool of dung. Gore Verbinski owes me $8 and 3 1/2 hours of my life.

Other than that, it was pretty good.

Not a Depp fan. He just seems perpetually juvenile.

But with a cast like the rest of them? How can they be in a movie and all we end up with is this?
I'm thinking #2 was better of the 3, #1 was better than #3.

I understand that many of these fine actors dumbed down their characters so kids could keep up, but they still did a good job. Other than the actors, much wasted moola.

Consider that this movie was made to be over the top and illogical. I agree that it would have probably been money better spent on something with more substance and thought though. Still It's way more enjoyable then any of the other big 3's that came out this year, Spidey 3 was a huge disappointment as was Shrek 3. Both major cop outs. The problem though lies not with Hollywood but the American people who will eat up anything to do with a great movie, even an inferior sequel. Anyways all that said I do enjoy the movie, and it's even better at home since I can use the cringe and groan moments for bathroom breaks and to grab a snack without even having to hit the pause button.

I'm a big Depp fan, dunno why, but I think his acting is great. But overall, I found the movie lacking. I mean, what are Caribbean pirates doing in Hong Kong ? I mean, pre Panama canal and all.... I know, it's make believe, but still....it seems all just a ploy to involve the multi- culturalism angle into the movie. And the messages we're to take from this movie ? Orderly, advanced societies founded on laws are more cruel and evil than lawless, dirty, pirate centric ones ? I hope I'm not the only one who sees the irony of a Disney movie basically preaching how freedom from big Gov't/Corporations is what mankind should strive for most.

Please.

I loved the first,
and I enjoyed the 2nd one mostly for the art (all the cool looking seafood pirates)
and I really thought that the 3rd has some cool stuff going for it:
Geoffrey Rush was back again and the huge ocean effects were awesome!

So I guess I would still say the first was the best, but I have nothing against the other two...

They were ALL better than the Star Wars prequels,
and the Fantastic 4 films (although even those were better than the Star Wars prequels)

The Fantastic Four films rocked, EM, though neither is as good as the first Pirates flick, I'll freely admit.

I thought Pirates 3 was about as good as Pirates 2. They saved themselves a lot of money in makeup/special effects by casting Keith Richards as a pirate.

LOL
I know you think highly of Jessica, but the first of the Fantastic4 movies was REALLY bad - repetitive dull and lame - but of course no where near as repetitive and dull as Attack of the Clones!

the second one was way better....in fact only Jessica's contact lens bothered me (I hope they fix that before making the 3rd inevitable Fastastic4 film

I just saw the Pirates 3 and I have to admit that I liked it very much. I was not all that thrilled with the second movie, and I hadn't heard any rave reviews from friends, so I wasn't expecting much. Usually my friends would say it was alright but they wouldn't sound too enthused over it, but after seeing it I was pretty impressed. Another movie third part I really liked was Bourne Ultimatum.

I agree, of course, it would have been really hard for the second to get any worse...

I watched the third one right when it came out on DVD, but of course I didn't watch the prequels first and so didn't remember a lot of the backstory, so I have to watch all three now...

Pirates 3 was a huge letdown for me. Convoluted, overly-mythical, contrived plot twists..it seemed so obvious the writer/directors were stuck in the "ok we went this big in 1 and 2, so 3's gotta be OVER DA TOP!!!" mentality.

The entire Calypso plot was stupid. The occult/mythical aspects of the series was fine with just Davey and the Locker. Adding in sea goddesses, reincarnations of sea goddesses, etc etc was just too much for me.

It wasn't a BAD movie, but I certainly don't think it stands up to 1..not even to 2.
