John Cho has been cast as Sulu, the Enterprise's helmsman, while Simon Pegg has signed on to play Scotty, the ship's Scottish chief engineer, in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek feature for Paramount.

Already on board are Eric Bana as the villain, Nero, Zoe Saldana as Uhura and Anton Yelchin as a young Chekov, the Russian-born navigator, as well as Zachary Quinto as a young Spock. Leonard Nimoy, who originated the role of Spock, is on board as well. Chris Pine is in talks to play the young Kirk.

The lead roles remaining to be cast are Christopher Pike, the first captain of the Enterprise, and Kirk's parents.

Well, if this 'shocking' recasting of the crew is 'too much' for you, instead go to a remastered episode 1 season 1:

You know, there's always a chance it could turn out to be a corker... remember what everyone was saying about Daniel Craig as James Bond?

There's James Bond, which is like Doctor Who in that it's a character that CAN be replaced by other actors, and then there's seminal character's that JUST SHOULD NOT BE TOUCHED. It would be like replacing the crew of Serenity.

It's wrong and they're beating a dead horses bones into the dust. If they HAD to do another Star Trek why not bring the first captain of the Enterprise to the screen? The one in the books? Or does that make too much sense?

I am about the biggest fan of the Original Series, and I can honestly tell you that nothing that has come after it ever exceeded the original Star Trek and the original characters/actors. So you’d think that I would be completely against this, but you know, I’m actually encouraged. I know that the original actors were so typecast it completely destroyed their careers, but it’s been many years and a lot of them aren’t even alive anymore. I was one of the loudest and most incredulous voices about the remake of Battlestar Galactica, but I had to eat that oyster, so I’m going to try to keep an open mind about this new Star Trek.

You voiced my sentiments precisely.

Original stuff like Firefly gets axed, while remake after remake of existing material gets green-lighted.

I'm eagerly awaiting the re-mastered original series, but I will give the new one a try...well, mostly...half-heartedly...BUT ONE HINT OF THAT "LACK-O-STEADYCAM" PHOTOGRAPHY AND I'M OUTTA THERE!!!!

Thing is I thought Enterprise was going to be good. I mean the very first outing into space, the formation of Starfleet, first encounters etc, etc, etc.... But the minute that ridge headed Klingon showed up on screen and I saw technology that looked leaps ahead of even Voyager, no matter how much I gave it a try, all I saw was history and continuity errors and I was too disgusted to watch any more.

I mean they had the WHOLE Trek Verse mapped out by Roddenberry himself, including the history of Starfleet and the Enterprise (which he never once mentioned the Xandi) would it have been so difficult to FOLLOW canon history? The 2 B's have raped this franchise to death (having said that I will defend Voyager, well except the last year)

So as Tim Minear put it, at what point does it go from (what was it?) life support to nechrophilia or something like that? I know there's already a HUGE set fan base out there, but really, they've done to Trek what Lucas has done to Star Wars. Am I wrong in thinking this?

Star Trek didn't get good until Roddenberry got edged out of it. Course then it got really bad once Berman and Braga got complete control of it(Last half of Vovager, Enterprise). I think J.J. can make something entertaining out of this.

Archer?

(Yeah, I liked Enterprise. Bite me.)

(Anybody remember when NATHAN identified T'Pol as his favourite Trek character? I'm siding with our captain on that one.)

I'm. . . "cautiously pessimistic" about this one. It seems too much like Smallville Trek, or Star Trek Babies --oh, look, it's the entire original crew (in what was supposed to be an Academy-era story). Now that it looks to be only a year or two ahead of TOS, I'm a little less worried, but still. Romulans? pre-"Balance of Terror?" Will we be getting a teenaged Harry Mudd? What about Kang, Kor, or Koloth (though if they worked in a whoever-the-hell-host-it's-in Dax cameo, I'd almost forgive 'em).

Remember the days when Star Trek went forward?

TOS ------> TNG -> DS9 -> Voy -> New Frontiers? -> S.C.E.?

Sigh. At least I know that, however the movie turns out, I'll still have the novels.

Consider yourself vamped.

Some of Enterprise looked good, but WHY couldn't they stay with the continuity?

Actually, the only continuity glitch I noticed was that the (unseen by our lead characters) Romulans were wearing Nemesis-era uniforms.

Common continuity misconceptions:

The NX-01 was not a Federation Starship; the UFP did not exist.

T'Pol was not a Starfleet Academy graduate; she was just given a field commission after the Vulcans kicked her out for being too cool.

The Ferengi were never identified; they will go down in history as another nameless race that Enterprise encountered (like those jar-headed aliens and the neural jellyfish people from "Vox Solens").

And I like to think that the Xindi eventually joined the Federation and have simply been "off-camera" all this time (like Arex's people, of whom only one individual has ever been sighted, and him only in the animated series).

My gut tells me this thing is dead on arrival.

Kirk & Gang???....Young people today don't know of or care about these guys.....besides...it's played out to death....boorhoorhoring!

Regardless of "the story" we all know that they'll come out of it just fine...and at some point start their 5 year mission....so what can they be planning to show us...? Kirk getting laid a lot? Spock getting razzed a lot? Bones perfecting Mint Julip recipes? What? I hope maybe I'm wrong. I hope it'll be good.
