Hey, everybody. I am a big fan of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and I was wondering if anyone else was too? If so, what part of the EU is your favorite?

Or to turn the other cheek!"

New Jedi Order.

I have all the "Legacy" novels, but I haven't gotten to read them yet 'cause of the unbroken chain of things-needing-to-be-done-yesterday that has been the last year-and-a-half.

Yeah new jedi order was awesome. I read pretty much all the main books up through the new jedi order. By that I mean not the young jedi novels or the prequel books or the rogue sqaudron ones.

I'll take things old school by going back to the EU that started it all, The Thrawn trilogy. I also enjoyed the Jedi Academy novels. Got about halfway through NJO when I gave up on it. Not that it wasn't good but there didn't seem to be any end in sight. Nothing irks me more than storytellers who drag things out too long.

*raises hand*

Being a fan of the original trilogy, tho, and not so much of the prequels, I stick to the post-RotJ novels. The NJO was probably the best of the bunch so far, altho it really peaked at "Destiny's Way" and pretty much went downhill from there. I'm reading the new "Legacy" series now, but so far it's been fairly 'blah', IMO. There seems to be too much effort to relate it to our own current world events, which I don't appreciate. I read (and watch) things like Star Wars to escape from those real-world subjects for a little while into a world of fiction and fantasy.

Also, tho they're obviously aimed at junior-high school-aged readers, I really enjoyed the Young Jedi Knights series about Jacen and Jaina. They actually turned out to be fairly relevent in terms of the mainstream EU novels, with Tenel Ka and Lowbacca becoming such established characters...

I really liked the Thrawn trilogy and the X-Wing series. The NJO was fairly good, and I like the new Legacy series as well. I didn't like the prequel novels, though. In fact, the only Pre-RotJ novel that I really liked was Darth Bane:Path of Destruction.

Read most of the Young Jedi Knights series and have been a follower of the Solo kids since then. I've read a few other Star Wars books, that where post ROTJ, and a few from the prequel trilogy, surprisingly, the prequel books are better than the prequel movies.(or maybe it's not surprising.)

I read the EU till about halfway through the YJK series, then I was like - GEORGE, WHAT IN TA MA DE GUI ARE YOU DOING LETTING THESE AIRHEADS PLAY IN YOUR BACKYARD??!!? Not going to mention any names other than Hambly, MacIntyre, Anderson....them as really didn't have much of a handle on the GFFA or its inhabitants. The Corellian Trilogy, that I enjoyed. Nice to see more of a place we've only heard about by rough description.

I skimmed the NJO and Legacy a little bit, but didn't particular care for 'em. There's a bunch of us on the Jedi Council Forums ( http://boards.theforce.net) fanfic community who are feverishly engaged in rewriting the EU as if everything from NJO onward never happened. I'm...ah...slowly beginning to retread an anti-NJO trilogy I was working on a couple of years ago.

There's even a girl on those forums who's writing a very, very well-done Firefly/Star Wars crossover. Everybody's tossing her such suggestions as Have YoSaffBridge steal the Death Star, Have Inara get friendly with Tarkin, Have Wash take up pod racing (that one was mine ), and the runaway favourite - Get Mal and Han into the same room. SOON. She's working on that one.

What's wrong with the NJO? Other than not having any cool dark jedi to fight, it was a great series IMO. It actually developed the characters and moved the EU forward.

Plus it was, tone-wise, everything the Prequels should've been --dark, ominous, desperate, willing to punch readers in the gut and change things, and with the added bonus of an ending that we didn't all know was coming.

Plus, the Yuuzhan Vong are some of the greatest bad guys in Sci-fi.

I just didn't particular care for the way the characters were developed, particularly Luke or the Solo kids. Of course, I needn't mention certain characters whose "development" amounted to getting killed off....After Anakin bought it, my NJO philosophy was, "Form up! And stay alert, we could run out of characters real fast!" (I'd have liked to see Threepio get his instead of Chewie.) I didn't care for the Vong overmuch, either - never have been fond of invincible foes, or understood why people root for the bad guys to begin with.

"Into the Black." It's in the Saga forum in the Fan Fiction section. A little digging might be needed, but the story's more than worth it.

Thanks again for that link, Steamer. I've been out of the Star Wars fandom for awhile, but with the 30th Anniversary, I've gotten very nostalgic for it again.

Along those lines I would be remiss in not mentioning my admiration for the Dark Lords of the Sith comics. While not as fleshed out as full on novels it is one of the darkest SW stories I have read. Another great thing is that the events take place thousands of years before the movies. No reliance on Luke, Leia, and the gang to carry the story. Kevin J. Anderson really hit a homer with this series and I can't recommend it highly enough.

I guess I'm just a fan of character deaths. It keeps things much more real. So, when a main character bought it in the first book that was a good sign to me. Especially cause it really hit hard. That one was very unexpected to me.

The development of the jedi was great IMO. It's what the focus of the EU should have been on from the start IMO. I mean the force is one of the main aspects of Star Wars. The orginal trilogy leaves us with one jedi and it's his job to relearn it all and then pass it on. So, we get to learn and explore the force right along with all the jedi. Then the conflict of the Vong really gets the ball rolling. You get to see the different philosophies and factions of the jedi and how they think and how none of them are 100% right. All in all I thought it was a great series.

This looks like as good a place as any to throw these up.

Japanese covers for the NJO novels, ones that aren't just photoshopped from movie frames and posters.

Force Heretic, with what is apparently Nom Anor, Tekli, Luke, Mara, Jacen, Jaina, Han, Leia, and Grand Admiral Pellaeon

Traitor, showing Vergere and a (random?) Yuuzhan Vong.

Star by Star, featuring a voduun-armoured Yuuzhan Vong, and some voxyn.

Rebel Stand, with Luke in his voduun-armour disguise, Tsavong Lah, and Yuuzhan'tar's skyline.
