Batman is a detective, a scientist, a martial artist, and incredibly smart.

In Batman Begins, he displayed no scientific skills (he had Morgan Freeman for that), no detective skills (he had Gary Oldman for that), and didn't appear to be much beyond the norm in brains.
Is this an attempt to make the caped crusader more accessable to the common man? Like he could be you or me if properly motivated (and rich)?
In the first Batman with Michael Keaton he demonstrated some scientific and detective skills, and I didn't find it too much...

Comments?

Holy Chrisisall, Batman!

Well, you do see him do some detective recon work in the Narrows when he first encounters the Scarecrow. And as a scientist, and I may be reaching, but just being able to use and configure the devices to his own use demonstrated some aptitude.

Well see at this point in the series he is real early in his career. He has no Bat Cave to speak of and no lab to work out of. I think that in The Dark Knight you will see a more acuratly portait of Batman.

I think this is the closest anything (besides the actual comics) has come to giving you the right angle on Batman. Although I did have a problem with the revealing of his ID near the end. He broke the "Symbol" and he never would have.

But I do like how it ended, explaining to the non comic fans that Bruce is the Mask and that Batman is what really exists.

I'll agree that there should have been more of the detective element to the character, but it was there. I'm hoping that's something they will expand upon in The Dark Knight.

Perhaps we'll see a crime lab in the refurbished Bat-cave this time?

I'd bet on it.

I was talking to a comic purist who stated that BB was inferior to Batman due to these holes in character, but I personally think Wayne will make himself the scientist and detective he expects in subsequent movies.

I kinda agree with those statements. I know everyone's been saying that BB is the Batman movie we've all been waiting for and that it's one of, if not the best comic book movies ever made. But personally I could never really get into it the way I could with the Burton movies.

To me, the Burton movies had mystery and awe to it. In those movies, Batman was still a creature of the night and had the mystique that made him an awsome and terrifying figure. They didn't spend too much time on exposition, because everyone knows the origings of Batman. It's engrained into the pop-culture consciousness. But with BB, it's two and a half hours of exposition. It's holding you by the hand as it explains in detail three times in a row how Bruce Wayne became Batman. The mystery has been taken out of him. There's no sense of wonder, only recognition.

That's why I prefer SUPERMAN RETURNS over BATMAN BEGINS. Because Bryan Singer didn't want to just rehash what Dick Donnor did in his movies. He wanted to expand the mythology and take Supes in a new, if somewhat familiar, direction. So he has some titles and a shot of Krypton exploding in the prologue and thats it. He gets that out of the way before getting to the true story.

That being said, still can't wait for THE DARK KNIGHT. Now they can actually get into the meat of the Batman mythology.

They effed up Supe's costume...
For that reason alone if no other, I rank Superman Returns just a bit above Superman III. And objectively, Superman I & II are still waaaaay better.

I love both Batman and BB, and would easily place both above SR also.

But these are just MY opinions; your milage may vary.

I didn't mind the changes to the costume, but I rank SR about the same as you.

I actually liked the new Superman costume. Looked more "professional" and less "guy wearing home-made tights." If it bugs you, just assume that the old costume was the one the Kents made, and the new one is Kryptonian fabric/tech from the Fortress Servitors (or whatever the movieverse equivalent is to the Servitors).

(That's one of my problems with the movieverse, actually. No Kelex. Every Superman story needs a smart-ass robot.)

BB is one of my favorite movies ever. I think the creators were trying to go for a much more realistic portrayal of Batman as well as the world around him, and leaving out certain elements of his character may make him more believable. I actually appreciate that they did this, but it will be interesting to watch Batman evolve in the upcoming films.
