FYI - Apparently the set is available from Amazon now.

Best Buy had an exclusive at one time, but for whatever reason my local Bastard Buy didn't even put them on the shelves and they went straight into the crusher, BB has a well-deserved horrific reputation for delivering the shaft to the customer, much like F*X.

Anyhows, bagged it on Amazon for $39.99 USD including shipping.

(spaced to avoid linkwrap and screen stretch)

Quick impressions of the eps.

#1 Pilot- Classic Space Opera, really pulls you in - R. Lee Ermy is his usual adorably psychotic self.

#2 Furthest Man from Home - A bit weak in storyline (much like Train Job) yet stunning cinematograhy, very emotion inspiring.

#3 Dark Side of the sun - Hell hath no fury, scary self-inflicted bad guys, the guy who plays McQueen gives us an intensity that just BURNS.

#4 Mutiny - What is it to be human ? what's worth dying for ? hard moral questions with no easy answers.

#5 Ray Butts - Very strong exposition on what makes a hardass cranky type tick, and left unspoken is the inevitable end lying in wait for them once they choose to walk that dead end path.

#6 Eyes - McCarthyism, Fear, Politics, and the dread of grunts caught in the middle of things they'd very much prefer to NOT know, or, in some cases, deserve to know and don't.

#7 The Enemy - Fear, in the persona of our very worst enemy.. ourselves.

#8 Hostile Visit - Faith in the impossible, a recurring theme for most Flans too, given our own show's history.

#9 Choice or Chance - Who we are, who THEY are, and just how little we know of these things, McQueen brings his smoldering fire to the fore in the field, dude, he's impressive.

#10 Stay with the Dead - The only episode I caught entire while SAAB was on the air, phenomenal cinematography in the realms of mental anguish, and faith in above all, each other.

#11 The River of Stars - Again, Faith as a recurring theme, and help from the most unexpected of sources, with a wild ride that must be seen to be believed.

#12 Who monitors the Birds - Awesome flashbackie goodness, much like Out of Gas, a world of exposition with very little dialogue, explaining the character of a man developed in lieu of human warmth, yet still capable of it.

#13 Level of Necessity - How much of your destiny do you really control ? a hard question and one deeply explored in this one.

#14 Never No More - Oh the tortures of "what if?".. a soldiers only moment, in any reality, is now - how then can a lasting emotional bond survive, especially in a brooding atmosphere of sudden fear due to a very lethal new threat.

#15 The Angiest Angel - Holy shit..
McQueen again brings the fire, this time on a slow fuse burn to an eventual supernova while the concept of personhood is explored, who ? why ? and what's the point ?
To do the right thing, and still not have the answers, to do the right thing even without them... unanswered questions galore.

That's about as far as I got, kinda still reeling from Episode #15 there, just freakin.. wow.

F*X needs an old school buffy type stake through the heart, for dumping this AND Firefly... wtf is wrong with them ?

It was a Best Buy exclusive for like 4 months, then got a general release.

Thanks for the review, Frem. Been waffling on this one a long while now, but you've got me convinced that I need to own the set.

I'm gonna have to move this set closer to the top of the pile of unwatched DVD's. I've had the set for nearly a year, but just haven't gotten around to watching them yet.
(I think I got them from BB; so the one in Port Huron, MI must have been one of the ones that displayed them.)

I could stand to hear a little more.

Well the one in Ann Arbor sure didn't!
But then what does one expect from a store where not ONE of the NINE rebates on stuff we bought there was ever paid up ?

They have a well-earned bad rep and I won't shop there no more.

And yes, that's a hint, tho we live on the other side of the city, mind you... just south of, ironically... Canton.

I liked the series too. I did find the acting wooden at times though. Still, it was definitely worth watching.

Ray Butts and Agriest Angel were two of my more favorite episodes as well.

This is definitely a series that would have gotten better as it progressed. But alas, yet another casualty of alarge corporations inability to look ahead.

Try out Starhunter too. The first season is finally going to be released as a box set in May '07 I think. I saw it on Amazon.com as well.

I got my copy the day it was released!
Didn't get any skipping problems until I got to the last disc, "Sugar Dirt," but I didn't want to exchange it for fear of getting a worse one.
(Anybody notice Babylon 5 (sans solar arrays) on the DVD menus?)

There's some good insider info on the Best Buy DVD release from FRUMIOUSB on this thread...
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=8&t=10737

"The Angriest Angel" is my favorite hour of television, anywhere!
"My maker was some geek in a lab coat with an eyedropper and a Petri dish. What do I need to make peace with him for?"

It's now my Christmas DVD tradition to watch "The River of Stars" along with "The Gift of the Wheelman" episode of dueSOUTH!

"And one more thing... It's okay to be scared."

Loved S:AaB. Just a shame there's no region 2 release. The industry really pisses me off with this region nonsense.

I agree with CITIZEN about being racked off that there is no Region 2 boxed set for "S:AAB". I am trying not to worry that the same short sighted thinking will come into play when the new series "Babylon 5: The Lost Tales" comes out on DVD. What's the betting we won't get a Region 2 coding of that either?

Yah, region stuff sucks. But luckily, dual-layer dvd burners are out and becoming more common. So, it /should/ be possible to to get a region 1 dvd, rip it, remove the region coding (or change it) and then burn that. The whole song and dance sucks, but what are yah gonna do? The companies are bastards.

The easier solution would be to play it on the computer (that doesn't enforce regions does it?). Assuming that that is a possibility for whoever wants to try it.

Response - I am tempted to buy a multi region DVD player though having gone HiDef costs go soaring. Sometimes it sucks being a consumer.

Ah yes, I forgot about multi-region dvd players. I remember a few years ago that these players could be quite cheap as well. But, regardless, I imagine that they're currently cheaper than a dual-layer dvd player (?).

But, why would it matter that you've gone hidef? We just got a HDTV and it still has the RCA cables. So, a "normal" dvd player should still work.
