Just found this guy's blog entry about my other all-time favorite SF show, and it pretty well pissed me off!

Asking the Wrong Questions: Alas, Babylon
http://wrongquestions.blogspot.com/2005/11/alas-babylon.html

Thought I shouldn't suffer by myself!

Sorry, CL, but I read it and, well, it seems to pretty well sum it up for me. Look, I like Bab 5. Where else do you get an ambitious, original scifi space opera? Especially if you dismiss Star Trek, as I do. But the show did have flaws. Big ones. And I think the reviewer pretty much got it right....

Sorry!

STORYMARK

I loves me my B5 (can't wait for the "Lost Tales" in June). But the show did have some problems. I can't read that particular blog at work without jumping through a bunch of proxy hoops, but the show had some very stiff acting (especially from it's guest-starts, who were often teeth-grindingly bad), and the effects have not aged well. And then the whole rushing to fit the whole story into season 4, then having to pad out season 5 was unfortunate.

Hmmmm, yes, it was by no means perfect.
Few things are.

But I try to be a "glass half full" sorta guy.
When I look at something that dates from a particular year, I try to put my mind in that era, and compare the thing I'm looking at with other things from that same era or earlier.
For instance, I don't compare Star Trek: TOS with Firefly or the new Galactica — I compare it with Lost in Space or Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea!
Likewise, I compare Babylon 5 with Deep Space Nine or seaQuest DSV.

As for the effects...

They still impress the hell out of me!

First use of proper physics, if I'm not mistaken.

SHINYED

I could not dis-agree more with this writer. He seems to be quite jealous of the writer/creater of Babylon 5. He seems to dislike everything he once liked about the show and says it hasn't aged well.....jeeezsh!... what the hell is this world ( besides Jacylyn Smith ) does??

I thought that Babylon 5 was a great show 10 years ago, and after having recently re-watched Season 3 I still think it's great. The characters which this blogger now has problems with each had many qualities that were interesting, and they grew and developed over the years in unpredictable and enjoyable ways....that is good entertainment.
Besides Firefly, I'd be hard pressed to think of any show with characters I enjoyed watching more....and the special effects...not too shabby either...even though "he" states that they seem lame now..I beg to strongly dis-agree...the Shadows themselves were mysterious & cool, their ships, etc etc were powerful & menacing....SO...what is this guy's real problem...ya know what I think it is?.....it's called the I hate everything syndrome....ya know bash it, bash it, bash it....just like the media, the press...lots of "fun" to rip things & people apart, especially when you don't have to respond to any retorts...hell...it's become our national pastime...ya know : build 'em up, then destroy 'em.

GIXXER

See bloggers / reviewers? I find that if they agree with my point of view, that means they have good taste, and I'll read more of their stuff. If we disagree, I'll still give them a chance, but being a dick usually has me dropping the shutters on them.

Idiots like this obviously have nothing to say, and, like me, use the medium of the internet to prove it.

My 2 pence, for what it's worth, was that B5 was awesome. Not perfect end-to-end, but apart from Firefly and Serenity, what is? And Amelie. And Grosse Point Blank. And Aliens. Better stop...

Sinclair was wooden, but I bought into it to such a degree that I was slightly worried that Bruce Boxleitner would be too lightweight. With great pleasure, I found myself proved as wrong as I've ever been about anything. He totally lifted the whole mood (while the rest of the verse was going to Hell, admittedly...)

The CGI is still pretty good-looking, and you have to remember that it was actually difficult in them days. Not like now, where CGI replaces plot (Yes Lucas minor, I am looking at you. Take 100 lines.)

Some of my favourite characters ever, except for Dr Franklin (archetypal sanctimonious Ship's Doctor git). If you're going to have a lubber aboard, make him a bit more like Dr Maturin.

I can watch B5 from end to end. Have done so, will do so, and am doing so (just got past Delenn telling Earth Force to "Be Somewhere Else." Stitch that, Earthlings.)

I particularly didn't like the crack about JMS not being up to the job of holding the concept together.

This was pre-mass-media / being able to download what you wanted, when you wanted. I always rushed home to catch the latest episode, no matter what.

On the other hand, you, blog writer fella, I won't be reading again, except by accident because, even though I'd make a real # of trying to spell JMS's name, I've already forgotten yours.

G

Wow, who's coming over as sanctimonious now?

(Oh, that'll be me.)
