I bought Vol. 1 of this the other day, after somebody on the Orbiter Boards recommended it...

...and loved it so much I spent all of today trying to track down the remaining 5 volumes!

It's about the crew of Debris Section on board a space station in 2075, whose job it is to remove objects from orbit that pose a hazard to navigation.

Has perhaps the most perfect tagline ever...

"In space a bolt can screw you."

I've been eyeing the complete set on Ebay from time to time, but my DVD wish list is so huge, it'll be a while before I get around to shopping for less well-known titles.

I understand that the Complete Collection is missing the Special Features that are included in the 2-disc Vols. 1-3 (which are gorgeous with their slipcovers!).

Amazon's got some good prices for the used ones!

Hmm. OTOH, it looks like the missing features are NASA and voice cast interviews.

*ponders the odds of either set of interviews telling me something I don't know*

I've only seen the first episode, and it was pretty good, but in case you're interested, the original manga that the show is based on is just fantastic. It's more somber and contemplative than what I saw of the show, although it has its share of jokes and action too. But it's just a great depiction of what everyday life in space might actually be like. I highly recommend it. Garbagemen in space; man, that has to be one of the most brilliant ideas ever.

Hehe, I haven't found Vol. 2 yet, so I haven't seen the bit with the Ninjas.
I tried watching the volumes I have (1, 3, 5 & 6), but it became clear halfway through Vol. 3 that I really do need to wait 'til I have 'em all.

Well. I don't know how much you already know about spaceflight, but the interviews with NASA's Mark J. Matney (Orbital Debris Modeling Lead) & Eugene G. Stansbery (Orbital Debris Measurements Lead) at Johnson Space Center, were fascinating to a layman like me, especially when they were asked about their thoughts on "Planetes" — they were pretty impressed!
Also, in the interview with the ADR Director, it was nice to hear his answer to the question, "What was it like adapting a 'science heavy' show like Planetes?"
Quote:

Tony Oliver
With regard to the scientific terminology, I love it. I'm an old space buff, Science was my favorite subject in school, I even applied to be an astronaut when I was 22 years old. So, the fact that it's got a lot of scientific jargon in it, I really enjoy. We're especially fortunate in the person that's translating the show for us from Japanese seems to be a Science buff, too, and provides me with an awful lot of informaton on websites and different places where I can look up and research what we're talking about. So, for instance, in one episode we start talking about LaGrange points, which has to do with orbital mechanics, and I was able to really look it up, research it, find out about it. And, although it's a little more than I would normally do for a show, I just really enjoy it, so I think it's... One of the best points of "Planetes" is that it's grounded in Real Science.

Also, the Orbital Debris Gallery was kind of a shock!
I had no idea such large (mostly titanium) pieces made it back planetside so regularly!

I looked at Vol. 2 of the manga at a local comics store, and put in an order for Vol. 1 (even though I've never bought a manga before), because a) the artwork is incredible, and b) there are great design sketches at the ends of chapters that show details of the technology, like the controls on the spacesuits, etc.

The spacesuits in this show continue to impress me!

I'm a little iffy about the controls for the helmet being set into the palms of the gloves, but it looks great when they're interfacing with it!

The faceplate shield is reminiscent of a couple of cool designs I've seen over the years...
One of the earliest interactive games for the Mac, The Journeyman Project, featured a suit used for time-travelling, the JumpSuit...

And then there was the "bear-proof" suit Troy Hurtubise built...

Oh yes, it's a nice one, but I am having the same problem, getting the REST of it - it's tricky to get a full set for a decent price.

Although I can hook you up with DVD#2 for $3.00 USD

I too have been holding off on really watching much of it since I have such a huge list to work through and want to have the full set before I do.

Btw, despite all indications to the contrary, there WILL apparently be a region one compatible release of Hell Girl: Season 2 - but no english dub as yet.
Release date claimed at May25th, which likely means July 25th, given how those things go.

Anyhows, yes, get Planetes, from what I have seen so far it's well worth it.

Yeah actually, I got volume 2 when I dredged a bunch of sample stuff from Rightstuf's bargain bin, and GoHastings is kinda my go-to source despite the bad habit of listing every used product as "Very Good" when many of em ain't.

I was gonna wait on it, but now I might not.

I got a lotta stuff on the list though, Hell Girl Season 2, and come April - Code Geass R2 Vol 4 and Lucky Star: Anime Legends Collection.

Bagging up the latter cause having liked Azumanga Daioh and Pani Poni Dash, might as well complete the trifecta - the tipping point on that for me was Konata's hi-larious karoake, what she lacks in skill she makes up in enthusiam, and I defy you to listen to her butcher the DragonballZ theme without giggling...

How you likin Last Exile, neh ?

Also, The one thing that really tweaked me into picking up Princess-Punie was that I got to see Royce Gracie in action back when the UFC was something more of a bloodsport, and having seen just how horrifying and brutal those moves really ARE...

I used to joke that if Royce wanted to shake hands, I wouldn't stop running till I crossed a state line, like hell imma let someone with THAT set of skills get a hold of ME, oh heck no!

Money was a little tight on my B'day, so, didn't get it.

But I'll sell some DVD's & get it on my own. I have about 250, so occasionally culling out 10 here & there to finance a new DVD set ain't so terribly painful. It's how I got all the seasons of Trek TOS remastered. The local store here give you $3 per DVD, $5-6 if it's a really good title.
And I'm always getting DVD's for Christmas from my Brother-in-law, who has no clue what I like or already own, heh heh.

PLUS, our local, privately owned video store rents 2 movies for $2.5o for a whole week, so now I'm off to watch Planet Terror which I haven't seen yet.
Aloha.

Actually with shipping that came out to near $35 USD, versus $32 for the full collection entire from a retailer I've not dealt with before, so imma hold out a bit, since I am pretty sure I can find it somewhere for around $30 USD +/- shipping new in box.

Thing with GoHastings is, as I said, that habit of "Very Good" which multiplied by several products, means one of em is almost certain to be beat up real bad or unplayable, and any Amazon order is a nightmare trying to deal with that kinda thing.

Saving a buck for days of hassle and eight bucks worth of shipping back and forth ain't worth it.

Thanks for the heads up though, I've passed it on to a couple less cautious folk who were also interested in the series enough to take that risk, lol.

Getting kinda sad that there's only 16 of 'em left to go...

The ONLY bad thing I can say about this series so far is that the closing song on each episode is kind of pop-junk.

Make sure you get the right Stand-Alone Complex; there are a whole bunch of SAC DVDs out there to trip over.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex (a.k.a. Season 1)

Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex: 2nd Gig (a.k.a. Season 2)

Ghost in the Shell Stand-Alone Complex: Solid State Society (a.k.a. Season 3/The Movie)

Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex: The Laughing Man (Season 1 recut into a much shorter movie/miniseries)

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: The Individual Eleven (Season 2 recut into a much shorter movie/miniseries)

There's also Stand-Alone Complex: Official Log 1 (and possibly "Log 2" as well), but those are rarer than latinum; you likely won't tumble across them by chance. They're behind-the-scenes book/DVD cases full of interviews, design sketches, and ruminations on philosophy/science.

There's also the two GitS movies (GitS and GitS: Innocence), which are non-continuity with the TV series.

That's fine with me. I just have a strong aversion to the anime style of animation. What attracted me to Cowboy Bebop and allowed to see passed the anime wasn't the fight scenes it was the compelling story line and full characters. And the music. The music was just amazing and from what I heard of the Planetes theme song above is a strike against it but I try not to judge a show by its credits.

The song in the front end is passable if nothing special. The song on the back end is WAAAY too pop-upbeat junk, and never seems to match the tone of the end of the episode. I conjure with a few commercials as a buffer, it wasn't so bad, but on DVD I just skip it.
The music IN the show, ahhh, very Firefly-like, the composer was definitely told to go for that kind of sound. Minus the western riffs.

Yeah, that's the best place to start. The Laughing Man cuts out most of the good parts, and 2nd Gig picks up off the ending of the first series.

(Hint: the "Stand-Alone Complex" thing is a three-layered pun: the show is divided between "Stand-Alone" episodes and "Complex" episodes [which tie into the ongoing arcs]. It's also a computer term [stand-alone computers networked together to form a system], and a psychological term [a "complex" describing people who don't fit in with "normal" society].)

Well, DMI, Planetes certainly has that, I had a reccommendation thread going for a while, and if I knew your interests could probably reccommend some things - if you liked Cowboy Bebop, which has a Fireflyish bent at times, you might also like Outlaw Star, although it's a bit stranger...

I still think Ed is related to River, they're certainly both odd enough.

But for compelling story, fully realized characters, and better artwork/animation than you'd expect, I'd say go with Last Exile, as well.

Oh, and Chris..

Heh heh, I'll bet!

I'm a bit annoyed since the distributor I ordered Lyrical Nanoha and Pumpkin Scissors from put it on backorder as soon as money changed hands - I HATE that, when some place says "in stock" and as soon as you pay for it kicks it over to "backordered", grrr...

Tis a reputable distributor which just means I have to wait for it, and not much longer than *most* dimwads take to get around to shipping it, but that always annoys me cause there's a couple game distributors who have a scam based on that, someone orders a game, they "put it on backorder" and 91 days later say they couldn't find it and refund your order, but what they're *really* doing is taking all the money they received that day and socking into a 90day CD account, skimming off the profit and then throwing it back.

I out those creepers when I spot em, but my State Attorney General is useless, and the Better Business Bureau can be bribed so easy it ain't funny.

So I'll wait, but curse it, I wanna see some ppl get "befriended"...

Phase #16 of Planetes, and it just keeps getting more better-er.

I don't want it to end...

You're very welcome - I figure that and Last Exile will do ya for a while, but I shall keep my eye out for anything that might strike your tastes.

Starship Operators came to mind, but the premise kinda sucks and worse, it's boring!
Maybe good for a rental, but just doesn't cut it.

I *just* finished Planetes...
One of the most pleasantly engrossing series experiences I've ever had, thanks to everyone who recommended it! It's my second favourite anime ever, just behind Nausica.

So sad it's over...

Next will be Last Exile, when I get up the gumption to sell some more DVD's to pay for it.
But... my collection is down to bare bones right now at 180 (sets counting as 1).
