Wow...that episode was beyond amazing. Rewatching now.

So spoilers coming folks:

.

.

Okay. Unfortunately, we know Galactica isn't going to nuke the service. A) Clips from next season clearly show people down there surviving. B) They'd lose half the cast. However, amazing tension, I don't think Adama is bluffing, I bet the raiders turn off or Roslin gets in the way.

I'm loving the whole Starbuck, Anders, Lee, Dee dynamic. Yet, I'm sorrry Starpollo shipperss, I think Anders and Kara have so much more chemistry.

I'm betting the eye of Jupiter is going to be the super nova and the whole temple is just to point at it.

Also, Tyrol's whole religous experience...wasn't his mom an oracle? Maybe he inherited some of her abilities....

I loved the whole negotiation scene. Some fantastic dialogue and character interaction. "You just lost your visiting privileges."

OH well, Temple of Five, Five remaining cylons. Coincidence? No way.

Can we please have a conversation about the new BSG without someone talking about the old one?

As far as I'm concerned the two shows have little more in common than names. Its like someone starting a thread about Star Trek and another person coming along and saying "Star Wars was better!!!"

Seriously...anyone see tonight's ep?

I thought for sure either Dee or Anders was going to buy the farm in order to ease the way for Apollo and Starbuck. I don't want them getting together because I think the series would suffer with them as a couple.

I agree with you on the negotiation scene, top notch acting all around. Especially enjoyed Baltar's reaction when the cylons offered to throw him in "in order to sweeten the pot". That was so cold-blooded considering he was standing right there. My other stand out moment was the expression on Tigh's face as Adama gave the clearance to fire. You could just see the wheel's spinning inside his head. It's cool that after how long they have known each other Bill can still throw him a curveball.

In the too good to be true category-BSG returns on January 21st, one day before Heroes is back. Outstanding!

I was again a bit disappointed with last night's episode (though nowhere near so much as last week's). I'm hoping this is just a little slump like the one we experienced last season.

Could you please start your own thread? This thread is for the discussion of this weeks BSG episode.

Okay...

I enjoyed it, surprise, surprise. It was really nice getting back to the usual formula after all these character driven episodes. Don't get me wrong. I really enjoyed "The Passage" and "Unfinished Business" was fun ("Hero" I could take or leave -- now that I've had time to think about it, I've grown to dislike it), but BGS really shines when its doing these kinds of episodes.

I really loved the confrontation between Caprica-Six, Gaius, and D’Anna. Poor Caprica. I have a feeling that she’s being set up to do something big in the next episode. The interrogation scene was great, too. Brother Cavil was fantastic. He’s always so fun to watch.

I think my favorite scene, though, was the scene where Roslin admitted the truth about baby Hera to Adama. It was such a short scene, and simple, but damn. You can really feel how big a betrayal this was to him, especially in the next scene with he tells Helo and Athena. She made him a liar, and he’s pissed.

I also really loved everything that Anders did. I’ve always liked Anders, and it’s gratifying to see him finally have a character. Poor guy, though, with Starbuck’s cheating. And yet she doesn’t want to get a divorce. I find the so interesting about her. Even though her behavior is completely frakked up more often than not, she still has her own code, some lines she won’t cross. I love that. And I love that Anders knows that she cheats, and accepts it in his own way. “I chose to marry Kara. That’s my business.” There was something about that line that makes it seem like he did know what she was about, what she would do. And, when she goes down, the first thing he thinks to do is go after her, despite all the crap she’s given him. His character has really grown since we first met him. At first, I really only liked him for the side of Kara he brought out. Now, he’s become interesting all on his own. I hope we get more of him.

This episode was quite quotable. I loved watching Cavil when he explained why he was throwing Baltar into the pot. Dean Stockwell does great things with this characters. He’s great to watch. The best line, though, goes to the chief. “It’s breakfast, lunch, and dinner until somebody finds a hot fudge planet.”

I'm just wondering what Sharon and Helo are going to do now that they know that their daughter is really alive.
Doing that to them is one of the worst things that the humans have done (so far) in the series.

I could stand to hear a little more.

Its interesting that you, Arcadia, liked the last episode and the last two and lightasdark didn't like it or the last two and says the show is in a slump. I agree whole heartedly with Arcadia but I've noticed how people are splitting in to two camps. I wonder if the show is doing something subtly different that is causing some fans to stray.

I love Anders to and can't wait to see how that whole plot line plays out and where he eventually ends up (hopefully in some sort of gov't or military role).

Also, did they just decide to give up on the civilian gov't vs. military conflict? It seems like this time last season Roslin would have been putting her foot down a little more on Adama going nuclear.

I thought it was a pretty quotable ep too! Not Firefly quotable, but quotable.

This is true. "Hero", "Unfinished Business", and "The Passage" were basically character episodes, which some people just don't like. I can understand. I hated "Black Market" last year. Still do, in fact. And "Hero"... it raises interesting questions, but the more I think about it, the less I like it. *shrug* Either way, they could afford to spread the character episodes out a bit more, I guess. I understand why they have them. Its a budget thing. The New Caprica storyline was really, really expensive, so they needed to have a few effects-lite episodes to make up for it. Still, I'd have rather had a "Sacrifice"-like episode than "Hero." As interesting as the issues it raised were, I would have rather had a focus on fleet-issues, which there must be many of post-New Caprica.

Select to view spoiler:

I looks like they'll get back to that after the break, though. Jane Espenson is co-writing another episode, episode 15 called "Dirty Hands" and episode about the guys who do all the dirty jobs in the fleet. So, yay, more Jane.

Then there is the whole issue of the cylon storyline, which lots of people don't like. Jame Bamber, who plays Apollo, has openly said he doesn't think we should have ever really gotten to know the cylons. I... well, I really like the cylon characters, and love watching them interact, but I really hope that the cylon storyline is only a season three thing. Its working fine now, but I can easily see how it has the potential to get bad.

Roslin clearly doesn't like the idea of nuking the planet and losing the road to Earth, but I think even she needs to admit that Adama would be doing the smart thing. Nuke the planet, keep the cylons from getting to the temple, and then jump the fuck away. Sure, people on the ground would be lost, but that is acceptable.

Speaking for myself, The only episodes I haven't liked this season are this one and "The Passage." Before that you would have really had to work at convincing me that this season was not one of the best seasons of any show I've seen.

I also want to point out that I didn't hate this episode at all, but, for me, it was just sort of "meh." It felt too jumbled and out of focus for my tastes, and the lee/dee/anders/kara thing was a throwaway.

CHINDI

First off, I LOVE BSG.. just had to get that out of the way.. havn't watched this episode yet, it is on tape.. will soon.

I too notice that there is something "off" this season.... I think they are having their sophmore slump sort of. Having said that, I have really liked this season too, they always surprise me... the turns of events and results.. I think it is simply amazing that they can still do that...

so, my musings.. I think there may be something to the familiarizing of the cylons but I trust that in the end it will be ok, when the story ends.

I realized that for me, I have (this season) been missing Baltar... he is such a deliciously evil and complex character.. I miss that he has not been featured as much.

I think there has been some straying from the main characters, as there are so many newer characters that are getting featured (Anders, Kat etc.) and that dilutes it a bit.

I also wonder if they are a little bit the victim of their own success... the story lines seem a wee bit protracted.. like they are drawing them out, instead of crisp succinct story lines... but I may be wrong.

For me, this is still the most intersting show on TV and I look forward to what they will do with it...

Chindi

You say that the two shows have little to nothing in common. However, I see them using a lot of the basic threads for storyline in the new one. I don't remember episode names, but the old series had an episode where the hydroponics ship was damaged and they needed to find a new source of seed. Not entire unlike the epsiode currently with the food contamination. And, of course both series have now had a meeting of Cylon and Human at a planet of big spiritual / mythical import in regards to the path that could lead towards the missing tribe.

So, I would say that there are quite a few similarities. That being said, I have come to love the current series on its merits. Much edgier, more 'real' if you will. But the idea still does begin with the original series ...

Just my .02.

I knew there was gonna be trouble as soon as Adama mentioned the nukes. Cavall is an idiot: Adama. Doesn't. Bluff.

Everyone should know that by now.

I love seeing character development for Tyrol. I laughed at his "dancing around naked with porn" comment.

I'm waiting now for Adama to authorize (or at least deliberately turn a blind eye to) Helo and Athena launching a rescue mission. They can't afford to leave Hera in Cylon hands, and I can't see Karl and Sharon abandoning their baby after learning she's alive. Heck, Tyrol and Cally would probably be in on it (both 'cause they have a kid of their own and know how much it would hurt to lose him, and 'cause Tyrol still thinks of Sharon as a friend).

And Dee needs to kick Apollo's ass to remind him of his own oath before the gods.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I enjoyed the episode and am looking forward to the next one.

I really enjoyed the Chief's character development. I think that Aaron Douglas is a good actor and he & his character can add a lot to the show if they will allow some character backstory and development. I think this episode showed us a hint of that & I think it will be a better show overall for it. Let's hope they continue to develop him.

Starbuck & Apollo. What the hell?!? I know that their "relationship" is as much for shock factor as it is for development, but it just makes me think less of both characters for their betrayal of their wedding vows. Starbuck loves Lee, but runs off and marrys Anders?!? WTF?!? Lee marrys Dee. Did he do it to spite Starbuck or because he cared about Dee? Now Anders is kicked to the curb by Starbuck (unless she needs the occasional tension relief Anders feelings be damned) and Dee sees now that Lee really loves Starbuck. The dynamic makes for great tension, especially given the standoff at the temple & Starbuck being shot down & out in the field, but I still can't help but feel that I am losing all respect for both Lee & Starbuck.

I wonder too what Helo & Athena will do now that they know that Hera is alive. We see they are obviously not happy, and given Adama's reaction to Roslin's admission of her deception, neither is the admiral. We see Sharon demanding to see her daughter so I think the next episode promises to be interesting to say the least. If I were Helo & Sharon, I would stop at nothing to get my child back.

Man people are so critical. A "sophomore slump"? Does anyone besides me remember the Galactica jumping into atmo scene in Exodus II?? That was seriously the single coolest thing I think I've EVER seen on TV. Even with all the great firefly ones.

Actually, I was gonna comment on the lines tho. "Hot Fudge Planet" has been mentioned already, but does anyone remember this one?

Starbuck--I have an idea that you may not like.

Lee--Do you have any other kind??

or something like that.

Frankly, considering this is one of the set-up episodes, and they tend to be kinda heavy on exposition. That being the case, I thought it was pretty good. Kinda neat to see missile launch tubes opening up, like a nuclear sub.

The religious stuff bugs me a little, as in how can the scriptures be so accurate when they describe stuff (presumably) light years away and millenia in the past. How did they get ALL the way back to the original colonies? It's a TV show I guess...best not to fret about it.

Cool to actually have a face to face with he Cylons also. I thought Tigh would throttle them at first sight. Which brings me to my last good line

"OOhhh".......--pause...one-eyed glare and smirk--"You just lost your visiting privleges"

Tigh is so great.

I'm kinda hoping at this point that Tigh gets further maimed and ends up adopting a hook and/or peg-leg. He makes such a great piratical figure.
