I'd put this in frakinggalactica but it's down.

I used to buy Starbuck as acharacter. I used to freaking LOVE her. The whole 'troubled childhood, rebellious misfit' thing, and to round it out -the fleets best pilot! No more. She's just not woking for me at all now. Here's a list of her crimes:
She got her fiancee killed, she screwed over Lee by marrying that dork the day after declaring her love for Lee. Then she turns around and dogs the dork. She displayed bloodlust in the secret execution group, only to realize later she was FOS. Then she's so mean to Kat, that Kat sends herself on basically a suicide mission. Kat was arguably as good a pilot as Starbuck too!

So, Kara is mean to people who don't deserve it, then she gets all contrite, and acts like an angel, then she starts being a mean b***ch all over again. I am DONE with Starbuck. She sucks big-time. In fact, I can't recall a fictional character who I've hated more. Watch -now she'll probably try and steal Lee away from Duella because that's just her MO now. Being a HO-BAG!
But she's really not simply a bad person -she's good and goddamned mental (and not in a sympathetic River Tam way) IMO, and shouldn't be allowed on the Galactica. She should pack up and ship out. If anyone else dies this season I really hope it's Starbuck.
Kara, YOU SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey I'm still recuperating from the whole Starbuck is a woman thing ( which by the way is one reason why I never really got into the show) but now you've given me a whole new reason to be glad I don't watch it:)

Wow, some seriouse issues with Ms. Kara there.

I like Starbuck. Yeah, she has some pretty unpleasant character traits, and I probably wouldn't want to hang out with her in real life, but as a fiction character, I find her quite facinating to watch. I personally disliked Tigh's wife more than any character myself, and was not too upset when she died (though it did make me much more sympathetic to Tigh, who I couldn't stand durring the first 2 seasons).

But I find it interesting that you frame Starbuckas so terrible, yet seem to consider Lee to be a victim in their relationship. Didn't he try to steal her away from Sam first - even while he was involved with Dee? It doesn't make what Kara did okay, but he's no innocent in this twisted relationship either.

Ron Moore said, I think in one of his podcasts, that he wanted to take Kara to the very edge of likability without making her unredeemable. Discovering how she screwed over Lee AND Anders for no god damned good reason really sent her over that line but good, in my opinion.

I hope the writers have the sense to give her a long and torturous road to redemption (like half-a-season long and almost-dying torturous), because that's the only way it'll be believable at all, no matter how troubled her childhood was.

Just because we didn't see a reason doesn't mean there isn't one.

And I'll ask again - how is Lee such a victim here? Yeah, it sucks he got his heart broken, but he went after her first, when he knew damned well she was involved with Sam, and Lee himself had been seeing Dee for months at that point.

DEVONNITE

I've tried to follow the New BSG, but I find it difficult because they took the only two characters of color, on the original show, Boomer and Tigh, and changed one into a women and the other into a drunken white male. There are no strong, highly placed characters of color on this new show and that was one of the drawns for me with the original show.

Apollo as a whining little whimp and Starbuck as a bitter women has me sorta keeping my distance. I try to watch every now and them but it isn't on my Tivo season pass list anymore.

ARCADIA

Huh. Well, all of the reasons you dislike Kara are the reasons I still love her.

she screwed over Lee by marrying that dork the day after declaring her love for Lee
Sam isn't a dork. He's a sport star! But, then, I've always quite liked him. I'd say Lee is just as guilty as Starbuck in these circumstances. They both decided to have sex, afterall. Kara's decision to leave him the next day was a decision made of weakness, but also very, very real. I think she really did think she was doing what was best. She wasn't, but that's Starbuck.

She displayed bloodlust in the secret execution group, only to realize later she was FOS
That was hard to watch, but in her defense she had spent the last four months being psychologically tortured. It tends to screw with one's head.

Then she's so mean to Kat, that Kat sends herself on basically a suicide mission
This is the only point I think you're enitrely wrong about. Yes, Kara was mean to Kat. But that's not at all why Kat decided to go on a "suicide mission" if you can call it that. Kat knew that she was dying. To start losing hair only hours after exposure to radiation? You are fucking dead. And Kat didn't get radiation poisening because Starbuck was mean to her, she was just unlucky. It could have happened to any of the pilots. So, Kat decided to embrace who she was, who she wanted to be. She decided to be a theif, because that was what it took to get her on her Raptor for the final mission. And she, she did something heroic knowing it was the last thing she would ever do. All of it had nothing to do with how Starbuck yelled on her.

Which, in my opinion, wasn't entirely unjustified. I mean, how would you feel if you found out one of your friends might be partly responsible for the genocide of the human race and everything that happened afterwards, including your toture?

It's what makes Katee Sackhoff such a great actress(can we still use that word, or is it more P.C. to just say "actor.") She's made a character you love to hate. Like James Callis as Gaius Baltar, I HATE Baltar with a passion, but love James for playing him so well!

PIRATECAT

I totaly agree with MSG. I liked Boomer and Tigh in the original because they were good guys so Devonnite and I agree. The original Starbuck was a cool ladies man having a good time in a bad situation not a sloppy volger self piting drunk. Starbuck would never screw over his friends and love ones. He was always their in a pinch too. It seems to me that BSG and her fleet are a bunch of scum bags headed to earth to lay their troubles at our door step. With the cylons in tow. I say when they jump into our solar system we turn the lights out. We leave a message on Pluto, Earth 3 jumps ahead in 2 sun solar system.

I don't disagree on any particular point. Kara went over the edge of likability.

Her acting highlight, far as I'm concerned, is when she was all vulnerable, half in shock, unable to process the info, when the real mother of "her" child showed up and took her away. That was class acting; and I really felt for her; and with her. It all went pretty fast downhill from there on.

Say what?? Kat, at the most, used to be a petty drug-runner. Yup, Kara, in one foul swoop, accused her of betraying the entire human race, Gaias style; but that don't necessarily make it so, now does it? In fact, Kara was bs-ing throughout the entire convo.

Besides, if anyone has f-ed up beyond all recognition, and been redeemed an equal number of times, then it's Kara. She, of all people, save Gaias perhaps, should be the last one to pass judgement on Kat for having made some bad choices in the past.

Esscuseme??
Doesn't Latino count as "color"? I'm only referring to the *most* highly placed character on the show: Commander Adama...

As for Lee not being an innocent in all of it, true but overall, I'd say he's still far and away a more honorable character that Miss Thrace.

Touch'e on the EJ Olmos bit. He was actually a cool guy when I was with them on the Miami Vice set back in the 80's

I was refering to Black characters, played by Terry Carter and Herb Jefferson, Tigh and Boomer respectively, but I was unclear and it is something that bothered me. Don't get me wrong I would rather see Grace Park then either of them but it would have been nice to see atleast one of the major characters stay as the original was.

Great now my wife is going to read this and say "What's with Black men and Asian women?"

I never liked Starbuck, not once. She's always been my most hated character on the show (followed by Kat). Lee used to be one of my favorites, but this season he has crossed the line to "meh"-ness.

This episode and the last have me worrying about BSG's direction. Hopefully this will be like that 3-4 episode slump last season, and the show can pick up after getting the crap out of the way.
