Damon: I'd Play Kirk In Trek XI

Matt Damon told SCI FI Wire that he's open to assuming the role of Capt. James T. Kirk in the proposed 11th Star Trek movie, but denied previous rumors that he is already in line for the iconic role, which was originated by William Shatner. "If the script was good, I'd do it," Damon said in an interview while promoting his latest film, The Good Shepherd. "But, yeah, I heard that [rumor]. I think J.J. Abrams or somebody said that at [a] press junket or something, and it got picked up [by the media and Star Trek fans]."

If Damon were to win the role of Kirk, he would become the first actor to play the character since Shatner played him in the original 1960s Trek and its subsequent spinoff movies.

Abrams, who co-created ABC's hit SF series Lost, is set to co-write and produce Trek XI and may direct it as well. Abrams previously directed Mission: Impossible III.

Pretty much everything surrounding Star Trek XI remains a rumor at this point. Abrams is overseeing the project, and he's confirmed that he had courtesy conversations with Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock, but other than that, nothing official has been released yet about the film's plot, casting or other key details.

Damon is best known to genre fans for his roles in The Brothers Grimm and The Bourne Identity, as well as Oceans Eleven. —Ian Spelling

Not to be the cloud over the sun, but too bad that TNG has finally ended after Nemesis. I guess they are trying to do what James Bond did and go back to their roots. I say do more Borg and Klingon movies!

Gah! So we're going to get the eleventh installment of a tired, tired old franchise ahead of the second installment of a fresh franchise. No wonder I hardly ever want to go to the theatre...

Sweet Baby Jane, Matt Damon as Captain James T Kirk of the starship Enterprise. Let me guess Ben Affleck as Mr Spock. Hey put George Cloony as Scottie. Sweet Baby Jane I wouldn't let Matt Damon command a shuttle ride to the rings of Orion. Capt Kirk is king of space monkey sex. Nookie to CK is why he joined Star Fleet. Didn't we have enough of the lame French captain always rubbing on Ensign Crusher. I got it put Matt Damon on the landing party wearing a red shirt. Yeh thats the ticket. Its hard enough dealing with BSG remake of really good show to garbage.
Well I am totally disgusted.

No! We must not allow Matt to sully himself with such roles! Someone go slap some sense into him!

I liked him in the Bourne Identity/Supremacy, but I just don't see him in a captain role. Maybe they need Nathan Fillion, but I'd rather they just do another Serenity because that is what Sci-fi should be. I agree that Star Trek is getting really old, and they should just let it end with dignity. After all it did have a very long and proud run.

What they should do with Star Trek is hire a few of the people doing the novels to show-run a post-Voyager series, and give them leave to play fast and loose with the franchise bible's rules (that "no non-human captains" rule? Gone. The "no non-Starfleet crews" rule? That's the second one to go).

A TV series based on the S.C.E. or New Frontiers series would rock hard. So would an I.K.S. Gorkon series (though I'm personally kinda burned out on Klingons by now). Romulan Civil War. Cardassian reconstruction. Ferengi social reforms. Bajor-as-Federation-member (giving a citizen's-eye-view of just how the Federation works, and how the Bajoran Militia is folded into Starfleet).

The Trekverse is every bit as big and complex and nuanced as the Firefly 'verse, it's just that everyone's so obsessed with TOS that it's more lucrative to keep trying TOS: Redux than to actually do anything NEW!!!

I'm not so much against Matt Damon assuming the role of Kirk as I am JJ Abrams taking the reins of the Star Trek franchise. I'm probably alone in my opinion on Abrams, but I think he's the worst thing to happen to TV in a long time.

I'd honestly rather let Stuart Baird come back and direct Star Trek XI. At least he knows how to put a movie together, even if Nemesis was kinda off.

As exciting as a new Star Trek movie sounds, I don't think Matt Damon would be a good choice for Kirk. Not reason, why...my personal feelings.

personally. I wish they did a Voyager follow up. I want to know what happened to the crew after they got home. Anyway...2008 Star Trek movie. Woohoo.

Pirate...Amazing!..I totally agree with everything, I mean everything you wrote....how rare is that in today's world?!

Yes...The new Battlestar is lame, boring, and full of characters I give two sheets about....original series had characters I love to this day, and I watched it "live" in 1978.

Yes...Matt Damon & Ben Affleck are two pretty-boy punk pukes who couldn't hold a candle to even having Wesley Crusher play the captain.

Yes...George Clooney is an overrated, self-centered, egotistical piece of go se.

If there is ever going to be a Star Trek "prequel" with Kirk before he got Enterprise, they better come up with someone a lot better than Damon, and they better get some new writers...well at least one great thing is assurred...we won't have to put up with any more of Data's wanting to be human horseshit ever again...thank God!

Matt Damon as Kirk? Damon brings too much baggage to the role. It needs a smaller name who can adopt the character and make it his own, while not sucking up the budget that is needed for special effects and set. I’m concerned that Damon is going to hog the screen and the budget and STXI will become more a treatise on the awesomeness of Matt Damon, which I couldn’t care less about, and less the continuing adventures of the Starship Enterprise, as it should be.

A Star Trek movie with Damon, Clooney and Affleck would require revenue of a small country to be any good.

There's that and TOS was just orders of magnitude better then anything that came after it. But if they were going to do something like you suggest then I could see where a big name like Matt Damon would be useful to grow the brand.

If Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, or George Clooney wanted to do a "Star Trek" film I wouldn't object...more power to them. They are actors and deserve to work whenever they can. But to cover a role that was established so long ago is where I would have a problem, Shatner is 'Kirk'. I think it has been mentioned elsewhere that Matt is already about the same age Bill was when he created the character, so to make this an 'Early Years' film doesn't really work.

If they want to create a new Starfleet Officer in the "Trek" universe for Matt I would be all for it...just don't claim he is James T. Kirk!

I heard about this on the channel g4. I thought it was kind of odd because he has yet to make the final part of the bourne series. I enjoyed his new role in the good shepard as ed wilson but i dont like the idea of him playing cpt. kirk.
i am hoping this new verion of star trek will be good because i did not enjoy the first versionas of the shows or movies. I think that jj abrams will bring some life into the series because he has proven himself a good director with lost and alias.

Someday the verse will spit in your soup but at least they gave you soup
