I was wondering how many of you here have seen these movies and what you guys thought of them? I really liked them, but unfortunately there were many apparent flaws in them that led to them being relatively unsuccessful.

Pitch Black was great when I saw it on DVD after a friend recommended it, who saw it in the theater.

I don't know if I was able to make sense of all of Chronicles - still arguably impressive in some parts but I didn't like it as much. I saw Pitch Black as more of a Survival type story, which usually keep me more engaged than sweeping, non-stop thrill rides of action and adventure. blah.

Play the Xbox game Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. It's the preqel to Pitch Black and it's quite good.

Two. One to try to put it in and another to find a bigger hammer.

Pitch Black.

Low budget, good characters, good acting, good script. Good film. I'd almost call it sort of unique-ish, in its own way, except that it had a real feel of something Roger Corman would do. Should have been a one-off, as it was quite neatly squared away. Could easily have starred Claudia Black even more than it did.

Chronicles.

No-one can ever let anything alone, can they? Non-stop rollercoaster action big budget ton of CGI cash-in. Oh, and if we can find someone to do a script, there are a few dollars set aside for that. A noisy irritant. Could easily have starred Jean - Claude Van Damme.

You can't stop the sequel.

Well I doubt you'll have to worry about any more sequels ;). I actually liked Chronicles a lot, but there are a lot of things I think it could have done better. I would have really liked them to have gone into more detail about the Necromongers and build up the storyline more slowly. Also, unfortunately the Necromongers were a bit too similar to the Borg in some respects, and I think that hurt it.

Aye, in my eyes Pitch Black was great, I loved the gritty low-tech style it had. Then, chronicles. It was ok, but I honestly don't think it fit in with pitch black. They seemed like two completely different settings.

I bought the trilogy dvd a few weeks ago. It came with a animated short movie type thing, that fit even less in with Pitch Black than Chronicles did (IMO). But hey, the story was, semi-ok. :P

Unfortunately I got both PB and TCOR before the trilogy came out, so I've never seen the animated Dark Fury or whatever they call it. I really liked PB because in a way it was similar to Firefly with its low-budget simple style. I think TCOR would have been much better had they been able to go for an R rating and make the Necromongers the real dark plague that they were supposed to be, as well as making Riddick more of an outlaw. The show suffered from being really subdued in those respects.

UNCOMPREHENDING

Pitch Black is one of my favorite movies of the action/sci fi/horror type. It's dark, it's edgy, it has giant man-eating creatures. The plot is simplistic, but it's supposed to be that way.

Chronicles I did not like. I have the same opinion of this series that I did of the Matrix movies-- the first one is engaging and thrilling. Then they had to go and give it a back story.

Pitch Black stands alone well, but Chronicles requires so much exposition to get you to where Riddick is and then leaves so many unanswered questions that it is frustrating to watch. And the Necromongers are simply not believable as a menace.

Don't get me started on Dark Fury. Lack of any discernable plot, poor animation... yikes. Just yikes.

I see where you are coming from, and there are also many characters in Chronicles that could have been given much more significant parts then they were. In fact, some of them barely have any reason for being in the movie at all. For example, the Purifier who ultimately turns back to Furyan and walks out into the burning sunlight. I really liked his character and what he was because of my personal feelings and beliefs, but there was no real point to him other than pulling Riddick into the hangar in the end to save his life. They could have had Kyra do that, or Riddick even wake up and walk in himself. I think they really should have had that character do a whole lot more in the way of "planning, plotting, and possibly scheming" for the Lord Marshall's demise. Then there's also Aerion, the Air Elemental who basically did nothing but hang around and give lame advice. Once again, another character who could have done a whole lot more.

I actually liked the whole back story thing, but they just made the Necromongers weak. They should have been just a bit more hardcore with them. The thing that hurt it for me was how they built up the suspense of their arrival like they were some dark plague, but when they arrive they're no more than any other army we've seen in any other battle movie. If they had just done like I think they should have done and made the whole storyline take place over 3 films, then it would have worked better, just like LOTR kept you wanting more and obliging you to see the next film.

It's been rumored, however as far as I know he's straight. He apparently likes to joke around about it and act a little "elegant" once in a while, as well as appearing in a magazine that has a large gay following. Really, though, this doesn't matter at all to me as long as he's a good actor. Ian McKellan is gay but I was very impressed with his performance in LOTR.

Its actually funny to go on the IMDB boards for pretty much any actor out there. Always at least one thread inquiring as to sexuality, as well as infinity rebuttels and agreements.
