WOW.

You gotta see it, Superman fans.
Sure, it ain't perfect, but considering what they had to work with, it's a great achievement.
Biggest problem: the ending. Gone is the atrocious 'kiss of forgetfulness', but the original 'turning time back' had to be used, as in the original script; they couldn't shoot another ending. As a BIG Superman fan myself, I'm grateful for this version, and it totally spoils the theatrical cut for me.
A polite effue to Richard lester for screwing with near-perfection.
I just wish they'd kept the 'soufle', and the 'taking away' of Lex at the Fortress scenes. Ah well, a minor nit to pick.

I'm going to try and pick it up tomorrow, I mean later today. I'll check back in to let you know what I think. BTW part II has always been my favorite.

Edit: Have to put this on hold until Friday because Wally World didn't have this in stock. Guess I'll be dropping some money at Best Buy instead.

Didn't the first movie have a turn-back-time ending too? I forget...

Ha ha ha. A card, you are.
You have to look past what it is, and onto what it could have been.
As it is now, it's still great, just greater for the changes.

An Lois no longer has the best punch in the flick!

Back a ways, I edited together my own version of it off ABC, and tried to eliminate much of what Donner and Thau thankfully did here (Lester schtick).

SINGATE

Got my copy yesterday and just watched it a few hours ago. Instead of going through a scene by scene comparison I'll just touch on some of the high/low points in my humble opinion.

I completely enjoyed seeing Jor-el giving his son counsel. Not that the motherly advice in the Lester version was poorly done but come on, it's freakin' Brando! The scenes where supes gives up his powers then gets them back are top notch.

Lois shooting Clark was a vast imrovement over the hand in fire bit from the original version. It's hard to believe the footage used was from a screen test.

My only gripe with the Donner cut is the turn back time ending. I really liked the idea that Lois would have kept his secret instead of that crazy magical amnesia kiss from the original. So nothing that occured in the movie actually occured right? Then again, for some mysterious reason the people at the diner remember Clark's first visit.

Overall I'd say this version a little better than the one I grew up with. I'm so glad Donner didn't edit out two of my all time favorite movie quotes. "Come to me son of Jor-el...kneel before Zod!" and "This superman is nothing of the kind." I just delight in the way Terrance Stamp delivered those lines.

I also love the serious tone of the final confrontation at the Fortress, no silly 'hide and seek' fight, or 'big S throw'.

And hearing Lois say "Just don't forget, never forget" (like Clark's mom in 1) was beautiful.

Imperfect but fantastic Chrisisall

And no 'beams' out of the fingers.
The serious tone of Superman 2 outweighs anything you might have liked about the Lester version, and ther ARE some things I really liked about it.
Tell us what you think when ya get it, PD.

Well didja get it?

Best way to see it: skip the first two of the last three chapters in the movie, that way the movie makes the most sense with Superman just saying goodbye to Lois on her balcony, then beating up Rocky at the diner, it's the way they should have edited it IMO (and they should have left in the deleted scene 'Take him away, boys').

It was a little 'meh'. But it does get better with repeated viewings. Some of the little nuances are better the second time around.
But it still pales next to the first two.
In fairness though, who's gonna do it better than Reeve?

Kneel before Chrisisall!
