Absolute pirate that I am, I got the whole first season with David Tennant a few months ago, and I am here to tell you all, that it is absolutely great! Tennant brings a ton of boyish enthusiasm to the character, but more than that, you get some real insight into the Doctor's mind and psyche. Don't worry, I won't be putting any spoilers out here, that would surely send me to the special hell, but you will get a real good look into the infinite sadness and loneliness that is the Doctor's life, and, finally, the Doctor gets to be a man, not a celibate individual as he has been in years past. he can love, he can be hurt, and he can grow very very angry.......get ready for a hell of a good ride!

I was anxious for this season to start. There was a thread of who was your favorite Doctor. There were quite a few that listed David Tennant. I just finished the 1st episode. I can see why he has become a favorite.

I don't watch Dr Who enough to understand it...at all. So I know I should be jumped on for even asking this question, but why are there differen't Doctors again? I've tried to watch it, but everytime it comes on, it's smack dab in the middle of some story where I have no clue about what's going on, etc... I'd like to know, but there seems to be such an extensive history, I feel a bit daunted in trying to catch up here.

I had come here hoping to get an answer to why Dr Who was different than last years. But if this it the 10th one, I'm in WAY over my head!

Too late for help?

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

No need to be embarrassed about asking.

As part of his physiology, the Doctor (and others of his species), can regenerate their entire bodies if it gets too damaged. So in the past, when he's suffered radiation sickness, fallen off a massive radio telescope, simply gotten too old (750 years old I think he was at the first time), he undergoes cellular regeneration.

This allows the studio to change actors without ruining the show. As for why this years is different to last years, Christopher Eccleston (Dr #9) didn't want to be typecast as the Doctor, so he departed, making way for David Tennant (current Dr)

If you find yourself getting too worked up about stuff that isn't real (RP Threads etc), then go outside, breathe in some fresh air and try feeding the ducks. (Because ducks don't care about your politics, religion, skin colour, choice of music or even your haircut. They like everyone, provided you bring them food.)

perfect explanation Nicodemus, thank you!
I haven't watched Doctor Who over the years, but the come back, with Christopher Eccleston, was too exciting to ignore, and I fell in love (with the show and him)
He said, in one of the DVD extras, that he took the role because he was usually cast as a thug, and told he had no sense of comedy or charm. Obviously Doctor Who #9 was full of both and he was brilliant.

I wasn't sure I would be as attached to David Tennant's Doctor, but I've found that just like Rose, I'm making the transition without any trouble at all! Tennant is a wonderful actor and he is really giving me a sense of someone who is not yet comfortable in his skin, or sure of who he is. He has created layers for himself which are very separate from Eccleston's tortured (everyone I ever knew is dead) soul.

I think I may really like Tennant's Doctor even better!

It’s not really necessary to know anything about that previous Doctor’s to appreciate the current two. But the story, as far as I know it, is that the Doctor can regenerate 12 times, before he finally dies completely, though it’s widely doubted that such a thing will actually happen, and the story has already begun to establish loopholes.

Every new regeneration of the Doctor is accompanied by a new actor, with slightly different mannerisms, personally, accent, etc. all of which must be plausibly accounted for to make the transition meaningful to audiences.

Of all the Doctors, (that I’m familiar with) Eccleston was by far the best. He had a dark and gritty personality, sort of the Mal of the Doctor Who’s, instead of the Willy Wanka good-guy appearance. I could connect with Eccleston, because he was not infallible, not morally perfect and not without his own internal struggle between right and wrong. Tennant, as the tenth Doctor, hasn’t done much for me yet, but we’ll see.

You are in for a treat. Tennant is excellent as the 10th Doctor. The on screen chemistry between himself and Billie Piper is great. I was rewatching the last episode of season two last night, and I cannot wait for the Christmas special or the 3rd series!

Eccleston was a nice, dark gritty Doctor, but Tennant has screen presence. He plays all the ranges very well, and by the end of the season you will love him.

As Tom Baker once said about David Tennant, remarking on his role as the new Doctor: He has secrets.

I agree on the brilliance of Eccleston's angsty edgy Doctor,
but I have to say that I was caught by the weirdness of Tennant's Doctor who is not comfortable in his own skin, and needs the others to recognize him as the Doctor before he can even begin to get his own head into the game....
there is a definite 'other-worldly'/alien quality to his Doctor which I'm finding very interesting already.
I was sorry that Eccleston wanted to leave the role so quickly, but I'm glad they got another really gifted actor for the part.

he will actually take Eccleston's tortured soul quite a bit further, beyond just the Time War....this is probably the most mature, most layered Doctor ever portrayed.

Again, I have seen the whole season allready, and I can understand your doubts, Eccleston's Doctor brought a sense of darkness never before seen in the show.......Tennant won't go back to the Willy Wonka type personality (I really like that description, it's very fitting)........he is a very textured, troubled soul, not at all comfortable with his place in the 'verse. Stick with it, you won't be disappointed.

I did notice that he put on a Browncoat. It's my favorite part when a new Doctor takes over. I love watching him find his own style. Did you see the glimpse of Doctor 10 with the Tom Baker scarf? Checking out old apparel before finding his own. I really enjoyed the 1st two episodes.

Well we got the Christmas Special and the 'New Earth' episode so far and I'm with those who've said Tenant has yet to impact me much less leave a fingerprint on my interest. Don't get me wrong, while I am a big fan of Eccleston's Doctor I am by no means hoping to see Tenant fail. The goodwill generated by the first season's excellent quality is a not merely a tip of the cap for the creative team which did so smashingly well bringing back this venerable series. Like many people I want to enjoy the Doctor's adventures and have them continue indefinately into the future.

Nonetheless I was surprised by how much the Christmas Special and the first second season episode DIDN'T grab me...especially as both were written by Russel T. Davies. They were oddly sparse of the sense of menace which seemed to pace almost every moment of season one. However I hope what I've seen thus far is a fluke and season two and Tenant can match or even exceed what we've come to expect from Davies. But I can't help thinking now perhaps maybe it wasn't the creative genius of Davies I've been appreciating all along. Perhaps the loss of the great psychological gravitas Eccleston provided will uncover the inevitable "Willy Wonka Soul" of Doctor Who which even Russel Davies by himself cannot continue to hope to hide.

New Earth is a bit of a dud by New Who standards but the show picks up quickly from there. Tooth & Claw is a favourite of mine. Damn, I'm now keen to do a big re-watch of both seasons. I'll wait for my new TV I think but there's a lot of good stuff there, though a few episodes are love them/hate them Marmite stuff.

OK, I am going to frlirt with plot spoilers, tho I will do my damndest not to give any away, but consider yourself warned right here and now........I am about to try and get you hopped up for Tennant's new Doctor, but stop right here if you are afraid you are going to learn too much!

Okeydoke, here we go:

Get ready for murderous Cybermen, Daleks being Daleks, a very pissed off werewolf, mad bastard ninja monks, robots harvesting body parts, nasty bat-things led by a Buffy vet, and the very devil himself. There's more, too, but this is just a hint of what is to come.

Eccleston introduced so much darkness to the character, you don't want to let him go. I felt the same way. When he freaked out on the Dalek, and even took up arms to fight with (unheard of with the Doctor), you knew this was something special. Don't write off Tennant just yet. The Doctor didn't go getting too cheery on you.......this is still kind of a F'ed up soul traveling alone.

Yeah, this is one of the things that impresses me about it: you can see how much of the show resulted from just not having money (the TARDIS being stuck as a Police Box? Only bit of set-dressing they could steal. Regenerations? Actor wanted to leave, but the producers still wanted a show. Everyone speaking British? Couldn't afford to travel. Doctor looking human? No makeup. . .). Yet the writers took this half-assed no-budget production and used it to add detail to the story (TARDIS' busted chameleon circuit, being built into a tesseract [bigger inside than outside], regenerations, TARDIS translation systems, morphological fields. . . ). It's awe-inspiring from a writing standpoint (imagine, doing science fiction without an actual FX budget! It sounds ridiculous --but it worked).

Gallifrey. Unfortunately it doesn't exist anymore. The Doctor can never go home.

And what I've seen of regenerations (just the one, really), it looks pretty painful. Like, "having your insides rearranged" painful.
