I'm thinking about renting season one of Battlestar Galactica off of Netflix but don't really know much about it. For those who have seen it, what do you think? Is it worth my time? I'm in need of a new scifi series to get hooked on so let me know. Sorry if this has already been asked, but I'm lazy and don't feel like looking around:) I'd appreciate your opinions!

I borrowed it from a friend. Really liking it so far; better then Star Trek, not as good as Firefly.

don't rent the 1970s one...
you want this current (new) version

it isn't as funny or as involving as Firefly,
but it is a huge space opera with the drama and character development
(some really amazing characters)

I think you'll like it

I just started watching it on my brother's recommendation. Start with the Miniseries. The first episode after the miniseries is "33" (just watched it last night - tension filled, really enjoyed it) but the disc numbers are confusing (if you are getting it from Netflix). I got Season 1, Disc 1 and I think it's labelled Disc 2 - season 1 disc 1 content. Confusing to say the least.

Enjoy!

I'm about to watch some season two (of the latest version) with my friends right now! We started with the miniseries at the very beginning of the semester and have been obsessed ever since. Even my friends who aren't really into scifi like it. Also, it gets better the more you watch. I definitely recommend it!

I like it. It is dark, and there is a sense of hopelessness to it, and hope too. But I like it.

The original was campy this one is dead on serious.

Not as good as Firefly, but an ok substitute.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

The marketing for the dvds has been confusing to say the least. The miniseries was released first on its own, then Best Buy offered an exclusive on the first season (13 episodes), but which did not include the miniseries. Then a later issue of the first season included the miniseries. Then the 2.0 release had just the first ten episodes of season two, with the second half of the season not released yet.

Whatever you do, watch the miniseries first, and be sure to watch the screen carefully early in the first part, as Mary McDonnell is in the doctor's office getting test results. You will see a familiar vehicle fly overhead.

I was never a fan of the original series, and have had arguments with people who were who feel this new version is almost as bad as what Lucas did with the Star Wars prequels. Personally, I think the new show is very good. Again, not as good as Firefly, but then again, what is?

Battlestar is amazing, my favourite sci-fi after Firefly. Its easily as well written as Firefly at times, and it just looks great. Never a dull moment and you do get very attatched to the characters.

If your expecting something like the originals though, you'll be dissapointed. Its very much more militaristic. Still. I enjoyed it loads.

I did enjoy it but it wasn't something I could continually watch like Firefly. You definitely must watch the mini-series first it's basically just a film that leads up to the first episode. You'll spend the first five minutes thinking...'What the hell am I watching', but it gets better.
I like the premise with lots of characters and several story-arcs that tie together. Not sure I'd buy it but I suppose you might have more money than this poor student!

I find that I can't just jump into a random episode with Battlestar, if im going to watch them, I have to start at episode 1 and finish the series. With Firefly, I can just pull a number out of a hat and watch it with just as much enjoyment.

I often watch Firefly when im waiting for someone to pick me up/busses/to go out actually.

The history of it is that they made the mini-series and that got such a great response, that they made season 1. So, if you're going to watch it, you must watch the mini-series first.

Let's just put it this way. If I wasn't involved so much with school, work and a few personal projects already, I'd be programming a BSG game right now.

So, I'd say that it's definitely worth the time. Go rent it now!

I am old enough to have been a big fan of the original Battlestar series way back when.. and am honest enough to admit that the original series is crap by todays standards.
The new Battlestar however is a close 2nd to Firefly in my all time rankings.

A friend of mine and I had a deal that I'd watch the original BSG with him, and he'd watch Firefly with me. Needless to say, he got hooked immediately on Firefly and begged for more, and alas I never finished the original BSG. However, my brother and dad are obsessed with the new BSG, so I downloaded them and am currently working my way through them. They're really intreguing...sorta reminds me of Babylon 5 with all the plot twists and subterfuge.

"Awful" doesn't even begin to describe it. I hadn't done my research and didn't know that the 2nd season DVD set cut off halfway through. And it ends in such a crippling cliff-hanger!

I thought, as I generally do, "Must... get... next... disc..." But THERE'S NO SUCH THING YET!

In response to the original poster, yes, the show is really good. There will be points when you don't really know where it's headed... but just go with it. It's top-notch television.

Hated the '70s version, was skeptical abut the new one, rented the miniseries (3-hr movie basically) and really got into it.
Loved the FX shots 'cuz they're done by ZOIC the guys who did Firefly / Serenity so watching the rack focuses & quick pans / zooms gives me a warm fuzzy deja vu "Firefly" feeling...
And the characters are engaging.

Kinda wonder if Firefly woulda caught on better if it'd been more "commercial" or had a previous TV incarnation to give people a heads-up first.

But yeah, worth a watch -- don't ponder I'll be buying the set and watching it repeatedly like FF / Serenity, tho... Like Edward James Olmos as the C.O.

The 70's version was pure cheese, but then most 70's shows were cheesy. The new Galactica is great, definitely the best SciFi show on TV now. Excellent writing, interesting storylines, and solid acting. I love that they made Starbuck a woman in this one, Katee Sackhoff is perfect for the role.

Battlestar Galactica is amazing. The characters are engaging, the villains convoluted and strange, and the ships are just plain drool worthy. It really pulls you in, but one of the few problems I have with it, is that if you miss an episode, you can be left reeling during the next one, or even three episodes later since there are a lot of story arcs. But once you start watching it, it's addictive.

Oh and they wait until October for the next season, so that they can have all of the episodes filmed. I think, but I could be wrong.

I know you've started watcing, and enjoying, now on your own...
but I thought you might like to know that just today we got a great big recommendation for BSG from our own BDC (Big Damn Creator) Joss Whedon:
http://whedonesque.com/comments/10584#129384
where he said:
Quote:

I'm just sneaking in to say I've been continuing to watch BSG, the wife and I are about halfway through season one and gushing isn't gonna cover this one. You guys have heard me gush, so it won't have any real meaning. You have to imagine Pauline Kael bursting into song, Lionel Barrymoore In "Wonderful Life" jumping up and jitterbugging with George Bailey, the Grinch's heart growing three sizes... you gotta start down there to explain what it feels like up here. I'll put it simply. The show is humbling. Not since the Matrix (the first one) have I had such a strong desire to go to writing school. I think it's so passionate, textured, complex, subversive and challenging that it dwarfs everything on TV. Or in theaters. Or boho perfomances spaces. Stuff hanging in the Tate? Not as cool. I'm not gonna go on, because I have to get back to work and because if I really start, this post will crash the internet from sheer length. Only downsides are a) I was already having a crisis of confidence, thank you very much and b) I can't go near any Sci-Fi mags for fear of spoilers. Apart from that, life is to be loved. The Gods are to be praised. Back to the job. -j.

I had seen various episodes over the 2 seasons, but never watched it properly, although I always enjoyed the bits I caught.

After watching the season 2 finale, I decided to go back and watch from the beginning. Anyone in the UK or Ireland who has Sky can watch the 1st season on Tuesdays, 9pm, Sky One. I ordered the miniseries, and have now seen up to the 4th ep of season 1. AND I'M HOOKED!! It's so frakking good, not Firefly good, but it's up there IMO.

It's dark, but not without hope, and it's just so well written, and extremely timely. The acting is brilliant, the characters all well-developed, and the visuals are very impressive - especially our own Zoic's work on the CGI.

Any fan of Firefly should definitley check it out - although I do say say that about quite a few shows(Deadwood, Wonderfalls...)

For the first time I caught an episode yesterday on Sky Three, one where they lose their water supply from a bomb explosion...

Yup has that "gritty" wobbly camera, also with the CGI, and a "naturalistic" style.

But on first impressions it doesn't seem to have the strong characterizations like Firefly, and it has that old sci-fi bugbear, sound effects in space.

Not bad though.

Deadwood was on straight after. What is all that about? All dialogue just seems to be people swearing at each other. No spaceships. There was one scene with a Chinese guy who's only word of English seemed to be "c***sucker". Interesting flipside to Firefly use of Chinese, in a way...

If you get the chance try to catch some more eps of both those shows - they really do grow on you. At least they did for me.

And despite the coarse language on Deadwood - it really is one of the most poetic shows on TV. Once you get over the swearing. I think the 3rd season is starting on Sky One soon, I've seen ads run for it lately.

I did some searching the other week to find out when Season 2.5 would be out and I found a site that said the tentative release date was September 19th. However, if you get the SciFi channel they are reairing the entire second season one episode at a time on 5 every friday before they start a 6 hour run of SG-crap (no offense if you're a fan, I liked the movie but 11 seasons plus a spin-off and only 14 eps of firefly? frak that).
A friend and I couldn't stand the wait and we will get the DVDs when they come out (already own the others) so we went ahead and downloaded them (not from itunes). Anyone up for a discussion of what the hell happened in that last 20 minutes? I wish frakinggalactica.net was still up...

I saw some of the finale, but I'm only now watching the show properly from the start - so I'll have to get back to you once I've caught up.

Although what I did see I liked - it was definitely a ballsy move to jump forward so much with the story, and I didn't get all of the subtleties of character yet - but I think it worked. Apparantly Scifi.com will be releasing little webisodes before season 3 arrives to fill in the missing gap in the timeline. Not sure of the details, I think it will focus on the resistance movement.

This is what ign.com reported in May from the NY Upfronts - where networks announce their fall schedules:

"The most exciting news on this front involved Battlestar Galactica, which airs on the NBC Universal owned Sci Fi Channel. Debuting later this year will be a Web series spin-off for the acclaimed series called Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance. If you have broadband, check out SciFi.com's pulse netork, there's already plenty of features, deleted scenes to watch, producer's blogs, plus podcasts for almost all the episodes. Well worth a look for any fan of the show.

WEREALLJUSTFLOATING

Thanks, I bought the region 2 dvd of the miniseries, watched it, got hooked, and then realised that the region 1 dvd of the whole first season included the miniseries, plus commentaries and features, so I sent the miniseries back. I forgot to look for Serenity while I was watching it, blame great story telling for that;) So I'll have to wait. I'm still waiting on the DVD to arrive in the post, can't wait to watch the rest of the episodes!!!
