I was just wondering if the Browncoats here were as big Star Trek fans as I am.

I own
All 3 Seasons on the Original Series
All 7 Seasons of The Next Generation
All 7 Seasons of Deep Space 9
All 7 Seasons of Voyager
All 4 seasons of Enterprise
and finally
All 10 movies.

In order of which ones I liked most

DS9
Enterprise
Voyager
TNG
Original Series
Cartoon Series

I'm still waiting on the cartoon series to come out.

Plus I have a few of those little plastic model ships.

Borg Cube
Cardassian Galor Clas Cruiser
U.S.S. Stargazer
U.S.S. Reliant
U.S.S. Grissom
U.S.S. Enterprise-D
Federation Runabout
Federation Shuttle
Maquis Raider
DS9
Bajoran Fighter
Klingon Bird of Prey
Klingon D7 Cruiser
Vulcan Science Ship
Miradorn Cruiser
And the last one I think is a Krisarri ship.

I'll post a pic of the ships later.

I'm a huge Trekkie as well, though my collection is just getting started. I'd rank the series differently though:
Voyager
Next Generation
Original Series
DS9
Enterprise (though I never saw the fourth season which I heard way out performed the first three)

Although, Firefly will always be my favorite.

Love Trek (well - except Enterprise)...but I have to agree with above...love Firefly/Serenity even more... I think I know why you like DS9 the most though of the trek series - it's a lot more gritty and "real" like Firefly. The others were more sanitized. Those ships would have passed Serenity right by - but Mal might have actually docked for a good heist on DS9, bribed Quark, wooed Jadzia and brawled with Worf.

And I'd have to add I do love Buffy and Angel more than Trek...but it's still really high on my list.

What can I say - I'm Joss's bitca (as Xander would say!) all the way!!

Now THAT I can relate to!

As far as I am concerned, Babylon 5 is better then all of them and also Firefly. I was a big fan of the original series, with Kirk and Spock. That was the best of the bunch,, by far, I found the others boring, self important, smug, non dramatic, complete wastes of time. Now, I think Firefly was a really good show and got ripped off, but I don't see how you can put 14 shows against 110, and a 5 year arc, which grew, and changed, and had incredible meaning, philosophy, music, depth and scope.Never mind the great acting,, such as the wonderful so sadly gone Andreas Katsulas as G'Kar and Peter Jurasik as Londo. They were all great, and won 2 Hugos and would have had more. In fact, M.I.T, the great university invited Joe Straczynski to honor him, and said, to their way of thinking, the 3 seminal SF series were Twilight Zone, Classic Trek, and Babylon 5. Yes, Firefly had a lot of promise, but Babylon 5 is better then all of them.

I stand between the candle and Star, between the Darkness and the light.

Well I did.

But all the star trek together has way more episodes than Babylon 5, lasted a whole lot longer and to me has incredible meaning, philosophy, music, depth, science and scope.

I am a trekkie that doesn't own a dvd of any movie or series, neither do I have any models or action figures. But, I do write in an online simmulation set in the Star Trek universe, and have even captained my own starship.

I NEVER felt about any ST character the way I do our own shiny BDH!!! No captain has motivated as much devotion as Malcolm Reynolds, and no crew has made me laugh and cry the way Serenity's has.

Once you've been to the 'verse, there ain't any goin' back. I'm a Browncoat, pure and true.

i can't say my collection stacks up in anyway to yours.

Firefly
BSG 2.0
Smallville Season 1
Earth 2
Dead like me Season 2
Farscape Season 4
Full Metal Panic Box set (anime)
Martian Succesor Nadesico full series(anime)
about 7 assorted anime dvds
and about 20-25 assorted DVD movies

and prolly a couple of things i missed.

but of course this collection was made around the same time frame as my 30 someodd xbox, ps2 and gamecube games were bought. Also the computer i rebuilt with almost all new parts... 3 times.

hmm, and i wonder why i can't afford ot buy a car.

Actually the forune is what it is all added up cause, 1 season of Mash comes out every 4-5 month a season of star trek comes out every 2-3 months, and Hogans Heroes once a year. I have been building my little collection of mine for 5 or 6 years now, to add to it 16 PS2 games and 14 Computergames along with some 40 DVDs. And on the list of series and/or seasons I own I forgot to add Firefly didn't I?

EMBERS

I've always been a Trek fan (watched the original series on TV when it was first aired)

my order would be:
Deep Space 9
The Next Generation
The Original Series
Voyager

then hardly being even on the list...with a big gap lowering it much lower (because those are all very well liked above this one)
Enterprise

I enjoyed Babylon 5 a lot the first time I watched it, but less the second time....
I didn't feel any lasting emotional attachment except to one or two characters. So I've never watched it a third time.

Farscape, on the other hand, I liked better the second time...

Battlestar Gallactica seems to be getting better and better....

But the only show I own (and bought more than a dozen sets of to convert friends and family) is:
Firefly
the writing, characters, acting, and general concept speaks to me like no other show ever has

I only own Joss Whedon shows on DVD sets
because I know I'll want to rewatch them many many times

Actually its Janeway. I'm a younger guy, but I just love a controlling, powerful woman (which Seven isn't far from either). Troi and Crusher jsut never impressed me.

Though I probably liked the crew of TNG better overall (Warf beats Tuvok, Geordi beats Beleana, Riker beats Chakotai) I just got more involved in the overall story of the crew trying to get back home a little more.

Why would you rank TNG over Voyager? Got a thing for androids?

B5 is all about the story. It was developed as a 5-year storyline, which was plotted in it's entirety before production began on the 1st season. Cast changes and several near-cancellations forced them to diverge from that story a little here and there, but for the most part, it's one solid storyline from beginning to end that ran for 110 episodes (plus 6 movies and a 1-season cancelled spin-off)

It's a show with no "status quo" ala Star Trek - even less so than Firefly. Virtually every episode deepened the plot (there were a number of intertwining plots), and I have never seen another TV show where the main characters go through such profound and changing character arcs.

It's not everyone's thing. It starts slow, as the entire 1st season is set-up for events that happen over the rest of the series. The 5th season is also a bit weak, due to their having tied up several plot threads early, when they thought they were going to be cancelled. But seasons 2-4 just rock.

I'm just finishing up my 3rd time through, though this is the first time I've been able to just tear through them. The first 2 times I watched, it was on TV.

I guess because of more diverse storylines; they were free to explore a wider range of possibilities, where as Voyager had a primary focus of 'getting home', and it sometimes overshadowed most else.
That said, I don't plan to get any full seasons of TNG on DVD, but at the sale of my next few comics, I do plan to pick up at least season 4 of Voyager.
I don't know what that says...

If memory serves, season 4 is when they were passing through borg space, therefore it probably says that watching species 8472 and the borg duke it out, watching Seven of Nine simply....be there..., and watching the show really take off is all pretty enjoyable.

I hated the Worf Troi thing too...Troi and Riker were always supposed to be together and it just seemed like an unneccesary (and wierd) delay of a key plot arc. I thought Chakotay and Seven hooking up was a good call though. I liked Paris and Bealana together too. Although, I just realized the other day that Crusher and Picard STILL haven't worked things out. There's always Star Trek 11 I suppose( The Search for Data)...

I forget, did Janeway have any romantic interests? A husband back on Earth or something?

Like I said, the first season is slow. They all feel like stand-alone episodes in a very Star Trek-kinda way. It's only later in the series that the signifigance of many of the earlier episodes becomes clear. It doesn't help that the lead for the first year is almost devoid of charisma, though he's replaced in season 2 by Bruce Boxleightner, who was a big improvement.

As for the FX, they were the first weekly show to use all-CGI for their effects (also the first American series shot in widescreen - though it didn't air that way till it hit scifi channel), and while it was cutting edge in the mid-90's, it looks pretty dated now. Especially they're red-screen composits (they used red instead of the traditional blue or green-screen, don't know why). Often you can see a red edge around characters in front of CG backdrops, and in one episode, there are several shots where they didn't even replace the red outside a ship's window.

There are other problems with the show as well. Some of the acting is hammy - especially with the guest starts. Though a lot of the acting is top-notch as well. They also, IMO had a long-running problem with fight choreography. There's not much hand-to-hand action in the series, but what they do have often looks very staged and hokey. It did improve with the addition of the character Marcus in the 3rd season, cause, well, he was a bad-ass.

But to me, these are minor quibbles. Like I said before, it's all about the story. Once you get caught up in that, the effects matter little.

Wow, I can't believe you remembered that episode. For a Trekkie, my knowledge of the Original Series is shameful. I guess you aren't counting when Sauran killed him in Generations then.
Heres a tough one, Kirk v. Mal.
I think Kirk has a better record and usually better weaponry, but Mal could take a lot more abuse and is probably quicker on the draw. One thing is certain, the fight would be pretty funny with both of them just making cracks at each other the whole time.

No. Kirk, er...slipped! There was a banna peel....

Hate to say it, but Kirk from TOS would plow through Mal. Unless Mal had a trick up his sleeve, or Jayne in the wings.
BTW, Kirk would have beaten the Operative, too.
No force in the 'Verse can stop him.

Technical note: The videotape masters of TNG are nowhere near as shiny lookin' as the digital masters of Voyager, after transfer to DVD.

I'm not sure it would be that interesting. It'd probably go something like this:
1)Simon says something dumb so Kaylee flirts with another doctor: Bashir
2)Quark gets bribed
3)Jake goes aboard Serenity and tries to get Inaara to "service" him
4)Mal, Jayne, and Zoey find whatever it is they're stealing
5)River comicly distracts Odo while the heist goes on
6)Worf beats up Mal while Jayne and Zoey give Quark his share and make for the ship
7)Zoey comes back and shoots Worf
8)Serenity escapes but Jake is still on board
9)While Mal gets treated by Simon it is revealed that Jake is on board
a)Jayne points out that at least the aren't married, Mal gets mad
b)Kaylee points that he is cute, Simon seems confused
10)Bashir heals Worf
11)Worf, wanting revenge tries to wring the information out of Quark, but he is unsuccessful and Quark talks circles around him until Sisko shows who has just realized that Jake is gone and Sisko immediately scares the crap out of Quark and gets the information
12)Defiant chases down Serenity

I think he might have tripped on a tribble..
I'm with you on that, Chrisisall, about Kirk. He knew how to manipulate his opponents and never afraid to kick some a** and still make time for the ladies..
Kirk could always get things done.. and he had the best in Spock and Bones.. (and Scotty could for sure tweak Serenity to pass lightspeed!)

About those old VHS tapes: man, I geeked away years of faithful taping ALL of the shows, editing out commercials, no less! The only series I own complete is the TOS. And, those are all the 2-episodes disks! Then out comes the seasons.. gorram it!

I have...

a Picard ornament
a Kirk Ornament
a Voyager ornament that you plug into your Chirstmas lights...
and a set of unreleased Star Trek posters

PLUS, I have actually played the original Star Fleet Battles (for some reason I always ended up being the Gorn)

not much, but I know in my heart than I am a complete trekkie...maybe because I used to make Tri-corders out of my brother's building blocks and colored thumb tacks.

I'm a fan of both shows. After I wrote up the possible plot it actually did sound kind of funny. I should have gone back and deleted out by comment that said it wouldn't have been interesting.

Very well put, and so much more. Babylon 5, as Joe put it, was about choices, consequences, and responsibility for those choices, it is about one person making a difference in the world or universe. It is about challenging fascism, bringing worlds together in common cause, it is about hope in the face of greatest darkness, justice, sacrifice, fairness, and the fact us humans aren't the be all and end all of all the beings. If you read the Principles of the Alliance, you would be blown away by the truth's contained within. B5 has been described as holographic storytelling, and man, each show was better than the next, with revelations, hard choices, and turning things on their head. There are allusions to the bible, mythology, King Arthur, so much else. Shakespeare too. Each show advanced the story, which came out of one person's head, Joe Straczynski's.. the Great Maker.. Classic Trek was great, all the rest were Star Drek, with boring, passionless stories, all tied up neatly at the end. None of them can even come close to the story of G'Kar and Londo, never mind the Shadow War, and for my money, Babylon 5 stands head and shoulders above the rest. Yes, I think Firefly had promise, but against 5 seasons, it is only a promise, not fulfilled, sadly. JMS is my hero and I am a B5er forever.

I stand Between the Darkness and the Light.

Well said.

Just to prove that I am the bigger Trekkie :) I wonder if anyone guessed my name "Calhoun" was actually obtained from the Star Trek Spinoff series of books "Star Trek New Frontier"? Captain Mac Calhoun! One Tough Hombre! hehe

I dont think the series went real long but I enjoyed them.

What can I say - I'm Joss's bitca (as Xander would say!) all the way!!

that would be an interesting crossover fic, you agree?
