I've said it before and I'll say it again.

I always thought VOYAGER was underrated. People rag on it and say how it was the weakest of all the TREK spin-offs, but I actually found it to be the one that shared many spiritual similarities to the original series.

Once I have the money, I'm gonna get seasons 4-7, which are arguably the best of the series.

Voyager did a great job of exploring 'the Enemy' in the Borg eps, and how much they could be us. Very difficult to address, yet they did it well. I actually liked Voyager better, on most levels, than DS9.

I loved Voyager when it was on. It came on at just the right time for me -- when I was about eight or nine, and really psyched to have a girl captain to look up to. It;s no Firefly, but it will always carry a place in my heart.

My favoties episodes, I think, are still "The Kill Gaming 1 & 2", where hirogens shoot people in the holodeck. I was a 7of9 fan (her character had so much potential -- too bad they didn't really know what to do with her; I guess they made up for it when the doctor had a crush on her though -- the two best acted characters in the series having lots of scenes togher, hell yes), so I liked Dark Frontier a lot, especially lil' seven. She was just adorable.

Other great episodes (the sad thing is, I knew almost all the episode titles off the top of my head, I am such a dork):
Scorpian 1 & 2
One
30 Days
Workforce 1 & 2
Equinox 1 & 2
Relativity (highly unlikely, not everyone liked it, it screwed horribly with the timeline, but I thought it was great fun to watch)
Coda
Favorite Son
Before and After
Infinate Regress
Good Shepherd

Okay, I think I'm done revealing my complete and utter dorkiness... for now.

No, I never watched much DS9. I saw one episode I liked about the shape-shifter dude, but every other time I caught it the episodes were very political and I would have no clue what was going on, so I got frustrated with it and vowed to hate it for life (what can I say, I was like, eleven, it seemed like the right thing to do at the time). I'm told that if I rent it and see it straight through, that it is the best, most mature series. To this, I say, hmm... when captain sisko dons the Janeway bun of power, perhaps I'll be interested (okay, so maybe I haven't grown up all that much... sue me).

I just can't see how I'd like a star trek show where they stay in one place and don't explore things. It seems anti-star trek.

DS9 had a fantastic premiere, and some truly good eps, but a main character died for no good reason (they wanted off the series), and the ending sucked.

I mainly liked DS9 for its "space-gothic" design. More character-driven than the other series.

"The Kill Gaming" makes me think of the Hirogen and Voyagers all fragging over a Counterstrike server. (Okay, granted that was kinda the plot, but still.)

Exactly how does one say "FOAD haxxor n00bs!!!111!!" in Hirogen anyway. . .

One fo my favorite episodes of the series that I don't think has been mentioned yet was episode 4x02, "The Gift". Just that one tiny moment in the prologue where she says her normal "we" Borg stuff and then stops and then says "Where are the others, I can't hear them." The way she says that, with the tiniest hint of fear in it just sends chills up your spine. You realize that this is a big fucking deal when you see a Borg show fear.

Died, but after six seasons of being on the show... ;)

I thought the finale was solid enough, if not great. The Voyager finale was much worse.

I think Voyager had the best premise of all the ST shows, but they didn't really do that good a job with it. There were definitely some great eps--Equinox is my favourite--but they in the vast minority.

RESE

Yes, buy the boxed sets of Voyager. If you're like my husband and myself, you will watch them over and over again. Our favorite episodes begin with the arrival of Seven-of-Nine, and not just because Jeri Ryan fills out those high-heels and spandex! She gives us the first back-story of the Borg, being assimilated as a young child -- she "was" Borg! So many questions were answered, in my view. Her plaintive cries when she was cut off from the collective touched my "mommy nerve" -- she was cut off from her family. She added so much to the show, to the story-lines, to the Borg history. (The episode where she "meets" her father makes my hair literally stand up on end!)

Although, Janeway as a Borg is rather unsettling!

By the way, "Hi" to Reginaroadie. Did you get the job for the summer, the good one?

Thanks for the nudge -- I'm off to watch Voyager!

P.S. We also watch "Enterprise" again and again, please no throwing of fruits and vegetables!

Star Trek started burning itself out with VOY, a.k.a. Autopilot Trek. Lazy writing, shallow characterisations with archetypes instead of individuals, logical inconsistencies, technobabble fetishism...just bleh. I guess the producers thought people would tune in just because it was Trek. They were right but did it come around in the end, leaving a stagnated franchise nobody except the hardcore fans is interested in anymore.

Rese, just saw the final ep of Voyager (For the first time- if you can believe it...) and to all who don't like it: !
While it had possible paradoxes waiting to blow holes in the space-time continuum, the story was quite emotionally satisfying. I don't even see time as working on a linear thing in the Trek universe, and I won't question it, anymore than I want to scrutinize why Earth couldn't have just been terraformed along with Mars in the Firefly 'Verse.

Bottom line; Voyager was a GOOD show.

Yeah, I love Voyager. I got the complete series on DVD about a year ago with some of my tax refund. I definitely like how the crew is all alone in the Delta Quadrant, stuck with a mixed crew of Starfleet and Maquis, finding themselves in situations where it might be better just to abandon their Starfleet ways. Because of that, the show seemed more real.

I liked the Kes years too. I try not to pick 7 or Kes, since they're too different to compare. I can say that 7 was easy on the eyes in her bodysuits...but that's neither here nor there.

I really only own two TV series on DVD...Voyager and Firefly (not counting Band of Brothers, that's more like a miniseries). I think that's a testament to Voyager's quality (in my mind at least). Now if I can find the money to get Battlestar Galactica...

DS9's finale was just about perfect IMHO: it ended the story, but left the universe and the characters at the cusp of a new chapter (unlike the Voyager finale, that ended with the sound of a guillotine).

Spoilered 'cause you did:

Select to view spoiler:

And Sisko's not dead, he's joined the Prophets inside the Celestial Temple (i.e., the wormhole). Dukat and Winn are likely dead, or possibly fused with the Pagh Wraiths, all of them still trapped inside the Fire Caves.

What happened was that Sisko sacrificed his body to re-seal the Fire Caves, where the Pagh Wraiths were trapped. Dukat and Winn had been attempting to free the Wraiths, who would destroy/enslave Bajor and probably the Wormhole, ending up as perhaps a greater threat than the Dominion. Sisko saved the galaxy (or at least Bajor).

The implication is that Sisko will return eventually --it's been established that the Prophets can create/destroy physical matter (the Orbs, Sisko's mother, the Dominion fleet, etc).

If you're one for reading, you may want to check out DS9: Unity, by S.D. Perry. It's DS9's 10th-anniversary celebration, set about half-a-year after the finale, and featuring the return of several TV characters who left the station. It also completely reshuffles the status quo of the DS9/Bajor environment.

('Course, this might make you want to backtrack to see all that happened between the finale and Unity: a new crew [every bit as varied and complex as the last], civil unrest among the Klingons and Bajorans, a new Starfleet Admiral with oblique ties to the original series, A Jem'Hadar "ambassador," Kira's religious crisis, and a four-part sub-series that's basically the Defiant doing a Voyager impression in the unexplored reaches of the Gamma Quadrant.)

There's also Rising Son, also by S.D. Perry, which chronicles Jake's quest to "rescue" his father --it's really cool, like a Star Trek version of Firefly (Jake signs on to a small tramp freighter and wanders through the Gamma Quadrant).

Hi Chrisisall,

Best season? Phew....well Voyager clicked with me right from the word go, but I have this personal theory about most Star Trek series which is that they tend to find their feet by the 3rd season (in my mind TNG and DS9 did, and Enterprise did too) So, I'd say Voyager's best years were 4-7, although the earlier seasons were still good (of all the shows).

Have to say though that there were some ideas in Voyager that I didn't like - such as Chakotay and Seven suddenly having a relationship out of nowhere. I also felt species 8472 were 'written away' too quickly and should have kept their menace. Plus, I never stopped missing Kes. But that's just me.

What about you?

Voyager didn't work very well IMO. It was all over the place a little too much for me. I liked the first couple seasons. Then they got rid of Nes who was really hot (you know...when she was young). Brought on 7 who was too disperportionate for my tastes and made it Star Trek: 7 the spandex years. There was only one episode I liked from that timeframe and it was the one with the super futuristic borg that they tried to raise. That was sorta cool for some reason.

Overall I'd take DS9 over Voyager anyday.

I liked the '7' years. I was SO skeptical when they brought her on, but she proved true. I haven't seen ALL of them in quite a while, but if memory serves, 4 and 5 were my faves.

7 and Chakotay was weird for me too.
I didn't miss Kes all that much, I never felt they knew quite how to handle the character, and her exit was memorable.

I agree with you, cris, with one exception, I did/do enjoy the Seven-of-9 character. So many different story-lines were realized when she came aboard.

But we're forgetting someone! The good Doctor! You know, ol' "whats-his-name". He certainly came a long way, from emergency hologram to marrying a young, hottie (real person, too) in the final episode. I confess, though, that whenever I see Robert Picardo, I tend to remember "China Beach" -- I'm guesssing that would be another thread in another timeline; I can't imagine that you're that old, but I sure am! I think he had hair in that series . . . .

STORYMARK

I really liked Voyager when it premeired, but thought it slid downhill very fast. I gave up on it by halfway through the 3rd season. Over the years, I'd see a commercial for one ep or another, and think "that looks like it could be interesting". Then I'd watch the ep, and be dissapointed. Lots of good ideas on that show, but very pedestrian, even banal, execution of those ideas.

I thought the "Dark Frontier" movie was entertaining, but I liked it better when Babylon 5 did the same plot in "A Call to Arms".

For my money, DS9 was far and away the best Trek series, in terms of story. Though I admit that I've always had a sentimental preference for the characters of TNG.

Seriously? *feels rather star struck* That's so cool.

Aw, thanks. "Memorial" was also one of mine.

Details, Redwing! Tell us a story.
Your profile has no info, let us all in on the production of an episode or two, willya?

ANTHONYT

Freedom is Important because People are Important

I had some problems with Voyager.

Mostly the people in Voyager made decisions I wouldn't make and couldn't relate to. Also, the potential conflict established in the pilot, with Maquis and Federation crew, never fully materialized. When I think of Voyager, I mostly think of 'wasted potential.' The ending also sucked. Voyager came back home with technology that would have turned the Trek franchise on its ear had it continued forward.

I had some problems with DS9.

The last season (post Jadzia) had some stellar moments, but sadly saw the deconstruction of some of my favorite things about the show. The Ferrengi, for instance, were neutered. A bogus plotline involving the Prophets and Sisko was also introduced. Sadly, they chose to ruin the greatest Trek villain, Gul Dukat.

However, DS9 had some amazing moments that I felt were missing from Voyager. I will never forget the episode where Sisko tricks the Romulans into joining the war.

I will also never forget the scene with Kira and the Cardassian resistance. We were fully placed in the awkward position of terrorists as Freedom Fighters. "But there are civillians in that building" complained the Cardassians. Kira's response? "The moment the Dominion realizes you won't hit buildings with civillians in them, they will move civillians into every potential target."

DS9 took the time to make you think, and sometimes it put you in dark places. I liked that.

REDWING

Thanks for your interest! Long story short, I pitched a few ideas for the show during it's run and I was lucky enough to get a couple of sales.

Any Voyager fan comments?

Next Gen was my favourite of all the treks but I liked Voyager too. Its been a while but I remember getting quite "on the edge of my seat" where species 8472(?) was concerned.

Redwing! You are so talented and lucky!!! I bow to your attainment of Kolinahr.
You have indeed gone where most Trek fans have never gone.

Er, I was a stuntman in 'Toxic Avenger 4"....
*Drops the pathetic attempt at self-importance, this is no match for real creativity*

Really, that's so cool, dude!

You page is blocked on the school computer I'm currently useing, but I have a question. Are you an agented writer, or did you get in under Star Trek's (former) open submission policy?

B]

The latter; I knew the script co-ordinator on Star Trek personally and I'd attended the writers workshop that some of the Trek producers used to run. I wrote a spec script and off the back of that I got an invite to pitch.
