NUCLEARDAY

My recent Firefly fanaticism has sort of pushed everything else to the back of my limited brain capacity, but I noticed something unusual at work today. I do the night-shift thing at a grocery store and they play that awful instrumential muzak all night long. Generally I've gotten pretty good at ignoring it, but I swear I heard the title theme from the movie last night...

Anyways, that was my favorite movie before Serenity came along. (And if pushed, I'd still have trouble deciding which one I liked better.)

Could have been a better adaptation, I suppose, in a few ways. But I think they got all the right elements in there (and Zooey Deschanel is pretty cute.) I was a little worried going to the theatre the first time, 'cause I'd just recently finally made it through all the books and the movie's never as good as the book.

As soon as they showed that musical montage with the dolphins singing "so long" though, I knew they were headed in the right direction, though. It wasn't the most faithful interpretation, but one thing I liked about that in this case was I didn't know exactly what was going to happen when I first saw it. Plus Douglas Adams' I believe was responsible for at least some of the departures, and he's known for changing things up each time he took the story to a different medium anyways.

Well, enough of that. Any Hitchhiker fans out here in the black? Kinda figured it would attract sort of the same crowd... Myself, I thought the movie did a great job, and I'm hoping they decide to do Restaurant after that. (Though atm, I'd trade it in for another shot at Serenity...) Interested to see if anyone thought different though...

I'm a big Adams fan, myself. I liked the movie, too. I felt pretty much the same way you did. It was pretty good, but the books are way better. I have the DVD and I love it, but not as much as Serenity.

I would like them to do more Hitchhiker movies, that would be fun.

Grew up reading the H2G2 series... I remember seeing the BBC version (cheap sets, cheap FX, cheap acting). It definitely had an effect on my sense of humor and I still get a little chuckle when I see random "42"s somewhere. As much as I liked the books growing up, I think I like Firefly more. No disrespect intended to Adams fans (I wore black the day he died) but I think FF/S has affected me more deeply than H2G2 ever could. I love the characters in FF/S, and it feels like I know them. H2G2 is good for what it is, but I just don't have very much attatchment to the characters.

If you haven't checked them out yet get the radio programs (the first two series at any rate) they are way good. The movie is OK (and Zooey is way too cute) but it's got nothing on the radio programs.

If you'll recall, the radio shows are where it started. They were later turned into books, and they are the reason for the frantic cliffhanger feel. What do I mean? They never knew if they would be allowed to continue, so they always ended on the most insane cliffhanger Adams could come up with to try and guarantee another episode.

Yeah, I need to check out the radio shows at some point. Was always a big fan of the BBC show as well. Remember coming across the collection (or was there both a mini-series and regular series? What I saw was about eight or so episodes IIRC...) in the video store and that was my first real introduction to it... much like Firefly I watched it all the way through in pretty much one sitting.

My biggest fear about the movie was that too big a budget would ruin some of the charm... I think some of the cheesiness played rather well in the show (and I especially loved Zaphod's heads IIRC.) Something about Adams' humour just really seemed to fit with budget special effects. But I also dug Red Dwarf alot, too, so maybe I was a bit biased.

The radio show was originally 2 series of 6 half hour episodes each. Then came the first two books which loosely followed the two radio series (but in altered order and with some changes, additions, and subtractions.) The TV series was 6 half hour episodes and followed rather closely (with one major exception and a few minor ones) the first series of the radio show. Then came the next three books and much later The movie and lastly 2 more radio series comprising a total of (I think) 14 episodes and covering the events of the last three books.

There were also a couple records and some text adventure computer games as well.

Now that turned out to be a lot more irrelevant information than I had intended on conveying. Anyway definitely check out the radio stuff. A main character having two heads and three arms is much easier to conjure in the imagination than watch in exceedingly low budget BBC TV light entertainment special effects.
