What?
Ah, common...
Someone must have fond memories of that series...
If I had a little EXTRA coin, I'd buy it to watch with my son, he's six, and he'd love it.

It wasn't that bad...was it?

I liked it...

LOL! Ok, I'll out myself. Definitely not an "A" or even "B" grade series, but perhaps a solid "C+", with an interesting premise, characters with potential, and generally competent acting. It just lost its way, and meandered away from the Geek Path.

Good point about it having great potential for family viewing. If they'd just had the guts to stick with that goal, instead of dumping the educational aspects, it'd have been far better.

One lasting impact on my life:
the "dolphin tubes" are the sole inspiration for my goal of having "chipmunk tubes" throughout my (eventual) self-designed fantasy Geek Studio home.

It's still on TV up here. Looks really dated, but I enjoyed it in first-run.

I still have the model kit. I'm quite proud of it: my first real application of dry-washes (only real way to get the underwater mottled-light effect).

It's a model-building thing.

A little googling helped me to remember that that first season WAS pretty good (2nd and 'almost 3rd' sank fast).
I will get it for me and my son, just have to sell more comic books is all...

I wont lie, when it was on when I was a kid, I loved it. Had a huge crush on Stacy Haiduk, I think thats her. I mean who doesnt love the idea of a talking dolphin, and what not. And my most fondess memory of the series, Ted Raimi, always cracked me up!

But then the show went south. Wasn't there a bunch of controversy aswell over its demise? I can't remeber I was 11 when it first started airing.

That's cool, I remember seeing the kit, and although I watched the show, I had reservations about the design of Seaquest itself...but I did put a lot of work into my Galactica and Enterprise models

It was too slow and thoughtful so the network made 'em jazz it up with aliens and action, then a new meaner captain and such. When it was cancelled it was too far gone to fix...
But the first season was a good, self-contained ride.

I guess I'm with everyone else: The first season was O.K. when it was "Star Trek Underwater" but I lost interest when I couldn't figure out what a race capable of interstellar travel needed with an Earth submarine.

Thats right, I think I stopped watching it after season 2. Im sure there was something about Roy Schnider not wanting to come back or something.

Oh well who knows.
They keep reairing it on the Space channel up here in Canada, and it still has its momments!

Roy watched as the second season turned to (a slightly more serious version of) Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, ie, crap, and jumped ship. Michael Ironside replaced him, and did what he could during the beginning of the third, but by that time a comeback just wasn't in the cards.

In my opinion, the first season was OK, but then they lost it.

seaquest! i like that show, watched it with my dad when i was little. i was pretty little so i can't remember much of it, just that i thought it was a good show. therefore, i can't add much to the "first season - good, second and third seasons - bad" debate. it is now playing on the scifi channel and i like to watch it when ever i can. glad there are some others here who like it.

The first season was good, and even the second season, before they introduced aliens into the plot. The term "jumping the shark" seems more than appropriate in this case.

Yeah, I was crushing on Stacy Haiduk and then Kathy Evison as well. Still, it was fun geek stuff.

Too bad about Johnathon Brandis too. I always thought he was a pretty good actor.

Just got it and watched the pilot with my son; he was intrigued. He'll probably really like the episodes as they are more family-friendly stuff, the pilot was slightly dark.
He kept asking me if people were dying...

The truth is that dolphins have been taught to speak English without a funky high tech thing, just not, you know, much.

On the flip side no human being has ever learned a word of dolphin. That always gets me, we can teach our language to many things, some birds speak at a more decent level than you might expect for example, but we can't learn.

One wonders what we could learn if we found a way to translate. We learn from primitive peoples, why not from animals?

I'd be interested to know if dolphins and other whales had mythologies, they've got a language, they've got brains and some even have what appear to be oral traditions (though we have no idea what if any meaning is contained in them) so when a tsunami comes do they just think: "big wave," or do they think, "big old whale got angry and smacked its tail."

In human cultures the less science there is the more mythology, to our knowledge no animal has anything resembling science so those capable of asking why something happened should have mythologies. I have a feeling that we are not the only things capable of asking why things happen.

-

On a side note has anyone ever tried to convert the gorillas they taught sign language to some religion or another.

I can just see it now:
"God is everywhere."
"No see."
"When you die you will go to another place."
"Dead no move"
"Not your body your soul."
*no response*
"Your soul."
"What (is) soul?"
"Your immortal being."
*confused gorilla*
"The part of you that doesn't die."
*very confused gorilla*
"Look, do you accept Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior?"
*Gorilla gets fed up and walks away*

I should point out that I have no idea how much language gorillas can be taught or how well they "speak" it. I do know that it would probably be very funny to see someone try to explain a convoluted religion to them.

Perhaps ‘Flotilla’ is a better term.

seaQuest DSV probably got me in to submarines and naval stuff. Once I get some coin the box set of Season 1 is going up right next to ‘A Century of Silent Service’, ‘Das Boot’ and ‘The Hunt for Red October’ (Which are right next to Firefly, Serenity and Space: Above and Beyond).

Seaquest, like Lois and Clark of the same era, has a season finale that begs no need to own the next season.
SAAB has a cliffhanger, and that I cannot abide, sad to say...

According to the creators of SAAB the ending was not a cliffhanger (Although it does a good job as one). The second season was going to be with McQueen back on Earth dealing with his lost leg and a new (female) CO for the Squadron. I don't know if the two MIA pilots were going to be rescued or not, and an alternate final scene for Wang was CGIed where he possibly survived but I think its safe to say he is KIA in the final version of the show (if you think about it his storyline goes full circle, when we first see him the Drill Sergeant is commenting on how pathetic his battle cry is and the final scene we see him giving this really long battle cry naming various ball players as he shoots the gun).

But thats not to say it didn't deserve a 2nd seaon... and a 3rd... and a 4th... and a 58th... oh wait...

Have any of you seen Sealab 2021? Great show and it's underwater! Did you see what I did there? Seaquest/Sealab...am I clever or what?

It's a cartoon run on Adult Swim. The show is parody of a 70's show about an underwater laboratory. Easily one of the funniest things I have seen in the last ten years. Not sure it is still running but the DVD's aren't too expensive if you want to take a chance.

Hmmm I seem to remember the US Navy built a real thing called Sealab. A guy went nuts, kill another guy then tried to kill all the remaining divers. They never caught the guy and the Navy shut the whole Sealab program down real quick afterwards.

EDIT: Oh Sealab even had a Porpoise that ferried down stuff from surface ships.

Because they cast a real water breathing Atlantean in the role, and she couldn't act. They should have just cast a human actress and made her look the part with latex!

LOL I had forgotten that show ever existed. Ill admit to liking it, but I think only the first season showed here. We are always so far behind that sometimes when show gets axed, the networks dont bother airing the next seasons.

However, ill also admit to not being the most discerning sci fi viewer - there is so little on tv here that I pretty much will watch anything, I dont get too critical, just use it as a bit of escapism. I remember being really peeved that earth 2 got cancelled after a cliffhanging first season final - but I have yet to meet anyone who didnt dislike that show immensley LOL.

I was young, thats my excuse...and i didnt have the gem that is firefly to compare it to yet.....
