My favourites begin with Titan AE (and not 'cause Joss did some of the writing; I liked it even before I knew who Joss was), Iron Giant and Fire And Ice.
I like anime, but none stand out for me like the three I mentioned above (although Ghost In The Shell 2 was exceptional...).

What are a few Browncoat faves in the 'toon department?

FANTASIA

Without a doubt, the CITIZEN KANE of animated movies. Was trailblazing and influential in more ways than one, every animated movie owes a debt to this artistic monument of the animated medium.

And for the Looney Tunes shorts, I'd go with "8 Ball Bunny", the one where Bugs has to take a penguin back to the Antarctic. "Duck Amuck" the Daffy Duck short that gets all meta on us. "Birds Anonymous" the one where Sylvester tries to kick his bird habit. And the Bugs Bunny one where he torments the opera singer. I forget the title. There are dozens of not hundreds of one that are just as good, but they're the ones that stick out in my head.

There will be a lot of other mentions of other animated classics here. But one that deserves due mention is THE PRINCE OF EGYPT. This is a prime example of how animation can do something that live action can't. You watch THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, the burning bush, the ten plagues, the death of the first-born and the parting of the Red Sea are the cheesiest, hokiest things you've ever seen. But when POE does it, it's borderline art and has the crippling emotional impact the other film didn't.

There will

CYBERSNARK

Warning: animation fan coming out of the woodwork:

Titan A.E., even independent of Joss. It's just a good movie, however you slice it.

Princess Mononoke, for the incredibly lush visuals. My first exposure to Hayao Miyazaki (not for lack of interest, but for lack of funds and DVD availability), who has since become one of my idols.

Spirited Away, as one of my top three "dragon" movies (i.e., movies in which dragons are treated as I treat them in my own fiction). This is the one that cemented me as Miyazaki-sama's bitch.

Dragons of Fire & Ice, another of the top 3 (the other isn't animated). The sequel (Dragons: the Metal Ages) just isn't quite as good IMHO. Plot gets fairly thin, the real-world historical parallel is dropped, they break up the Romeo/Juliet couple, and the dragons are barely even in it.

Not technically a movie in the theatrical sense, but Gargoyles: The Heroes Awaken (the five-part series premiere) is a single story, over two hours long, and works well as a stand-alone. The commentary on the DVD makes it even better, stressing how the four episode-breaks spotlight the implied moral-ambiguity of the gargoyles (this being before we've gotten to know the depths of their nobility).

Also not technically a movie, but a three-episode OVA: Read or Die, for my beloved Yomiko Readman. Seriously, she can almost out-kawaii Kaylee (her glasses put her over the top).

I want to mention the InuYasha movies, but they don't really have as much impact unless you watch the show.

I've grown to hate Looney Tunes, not for any artistic reasons, but just because Teletoon (Canada's half-assed attempt at a Cartoon Network) doesn't seem to realize there are any other animated movies (well, aside from Scooby Doo).

Not really versed in this area, so I'm going with childhood favorites.

Secret of NIMH.

The Hobbit.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

The Jungle Book.

I mean the bare necessities or Mother Nature's recipes
That bring the bare necessities of life"

That's classic.

I LOVE THE JUNGLE BOOK. Of all the "classic" Disney films, the ones that were my faves were FANTASIA, 101 DALMATIANS and THE JUNGLE BOOK. Baloo is my favorite animated bear, with Yogi coming in at a close second. Louis Prima was perfect for King Louis, probably the most swinging dictator ever on film. The vultures were a cool Beatles homage, and Shere Khan voiced by George Sanders is one of the best Disney villains.

I don't know if anyone here reads or read it, but there's this great comic book out there called BONE. And there's a character in there called Rock Jaw, whose this mountain lion about two stories high. I always imagined him as an homage to Shere Khan. Iffin they should ever adapt it into a movie or a miniseries, I think the filmmakers should keep that in mind.

I love The Last Unicorn and The Secret of NIHM. I am such a child of the eighties. I also have this strange affinity for Disney's Robin Hood. I always get teary when the Rooster is singing while they send all the poor town creatures to the jail for not paying their taxes. It gets me every time! Oh, and Alice in Wonderland!

Leighkohl,

Regarding Disney's Robin Hood....
My Dad loved that movie, and I loved watching it with him, so it's on my list. I used to cry at the same scene, now I cry variously thru the whole thing, (except the funny parts) because I miss my Dad. Such a good movie!

There's also an old cartoon about a vulture baby bringing home a baby bumblebee.... can't remember, I'm sure it's Looney Tunes. That's one of my faves too!

I couldn't stand the Secret of NIMH! Didn't anyone read the book? What the heck was up with all that magic nonsense? (Sorry for the mini-rant.)

Aww, now I want to cry about you and your dad. My grandpa loves Disney movies, he has so many of them!!! He grew up in West Virginia,in a glass factory town and was the oldest of ten, so I think he wants a second childhood. He took me to every Disney movie released since I was little( I remember him taking me to the Black Cauldron and the re-release of the Jungle Book). I watch the Robin Hood movie with him sometimes, he loves the music on it! It's nice to have that connection to something. Now I want to watch Robin Hood, and I'll probably start crying too!

MANWITHPEZ

Important people don't do field work.

Beauty and the Beast at the top(There's a reason its the only animated film ever nominated for Best picture!)

Mulan and Hunchback are kinda tied with me because both contained huge crowd scenes. But, I still get goosebumps when Quasimodo lifts Esmerelda over his head: "SANCTUARY!"

I really, really liked Ghost In The Shell. But honestly, I'm not sure why. The story is kinda all over the place, and while the animation is good, its not...you know...the best. I also liked Metropolis (At least, I think that's what its called). Vampire Killer D...with only a few problems, is worth watching too, I think.

Toy Story proved that the medium is only as good as the writing (thanks Joss). Yes, it was a wonder to see, but could have been a nightmare to watch if there hadn't been a good story there.

And, I'm a big, big, Incredibles fan, and feel slighted that the animated films now have their own category in the Oscars, because I think this one could have been another best picture contender...

Okay, another huge animated geek here.
So I'm just gonna make a nice long list of my faves.

Lilo & Stitch (funny, sweet, and sad)
Titan AE
Sinbad
Treasure Planet
Toy Story(s)
Shrek(s)
The Incredibles
All things Inuyasha
Castle in the Sky
Spirited Away
Kiki's Delivery Service
Princess Mononoke
Final Fantasy: Advent Children (can't stand Spirits Within cuz it's not Final Fantasy, despite being a good movie in its own right)
Escaflowne (can't believe no one mentioned this great anime)
Ice Age
Emperor's New Groove
Pokemon(s) (I know it's kinda childish, but give me a break)
Halloween Tree (one of my all time Halloween faves)
Lots of other Disney movies

That's all I can think of for now, but I definitely wanna see Fire and Ice and Ghost in the Shell.

I guess this must be a youngish crowd, at least from where I'm sitting.
I have to agree that Fantasia is a masterpiece of a movie, but my favourite for purely great animation has to be Disney's "Pinochio". Disney studios at their peak.
Also, anything by the Wallace and Gromit crowd, including "Chicken Run", but alot of that may be due to the homage paid to "The Great Escape"

FNORDCHAN

I'm was about to enthuse wildly about Millennium Actress, but am pleased to see that shirlockc beat me to it. Oh, what the hell - I'll enthuse anyway.

Millennium Actress - I've thoroughly enjoyed everything Satoshi (Perfect Blue, Paranoia Agent) Kon has worked on, but Millennium Actress is easily my favorite. It's a love letter to Japanese cinema circa mid-30s to mid-60s, as told by an aging actress reflecting on her career to a couple of documentarians who are suprised to find themselves in the midst of both her past roles and memories. Simply, utterly wonderful. Speaking of Kon, with Christmas just around the corner it's a great time to break out Tokyo Godfathers, his retelling of Three Godfathers starring a trio of bums in Tokyo, with Christmas miracles and all.

That said, I've got more enthusing to do. Here are some favorite films that haven't already been mentioned above:

Toy Story 2 - All the Pixar flicks are tremendously entertaining (and, while it's hard to pick a favorite, I may have to go with The Incredibles), but Toy Story 2 is that rarity of films - a sequel that's better than the original - and thus deserves special mention. Well, okay, The Incredibles is freakin' awesome, so we'll give that special mention, too.

Allegro non Troppo - Brunno Bozzetto's crazed 1977 send-up of Fantasia is astonishing to behold. Like Fantasia, it's a series of animated segments set to classical music with live-action bits as a framing device, but from there things diverge wildly as the narrator - think an combination car salesman and con man (or is that redundant?) wearing a horrifically bad suit - holds forth on the originality of the film (while rejecting the supposed efforts of this Bisney character), before a small mob of old little Italian ladies tromp in to act as orchestra before a long suffering animator who is chained to his desk by a brutish conductor. But, inspired live-action gags aside, the real star here is the animation which alternates between whimsical, leering, caustic, madcap, and even poignet. Highlights include a complete history of evolution (sparked by an abandoned Coke bottle) set to "Bolero", a tear-jerker about a starving cat using "Valse Triste" to great effect, and the frantic finale. Highly recommended, especially for the Fantasia fan interested in seeing a good-natured parody of a holy cow. There's an excellent R1 DVD release courtesy of HVE that also includes a slew of Bozzetto's shorts; I'm particularly fond of "Self Service", about a bunch of hungry mosquitos.

Mind Game - Having just seen Mind Game (Masaaki Yuasa, 2004) very recently, I may be a bit too dazzled to be truly objective, but what the hell - the only thing keeping Mind Game from being the best animated film of the past five years is Millennium Actress, and even then it's a close call. Mind Game is about a depressed young man who dies, but convinces God to give him another chance. Restored to life mere moments before the fatal incident, our hero is determined to go live life to it's fullest...but first he has to get away from the gangsters chasing after him. I realize that the phrase "mind blowing" gets tossed around a lot, but it's entirely justified here, between the exuberant story (no mean feat considering that a full third of the film takes place inside a whale) and dizzying array of animation styles. Portions of the film are literally jaw-dropping. I can't recommend it highly enough. But, hey, don't just take my word for it - check out the trailer:

http://www.mindgame.jp/trailer/

Castle of Cagliostro - As a raging anime enthusiast, I'm occasionally asked to name my favorite anime. It's a tough question, and the answer probably involves multiple top-five lists for film television, and OVAs, but if cornered I'll always answer Castle of Cagliostro. It's not my favorite Miyazaki flick - Porco Rosso gets that distinction - but Cagliostro is one of the most universally entertaining animated films I've ever seen. When the loveable rogue Lupin III meets a damsel in distress - who just happens to be connected to a vast counterfieting ring - he calls in his cheerful band of crooks to help save the day. Naturally, all hell breaks loose, and the result is one of the best adventure films ever made, animated or otherwise. If you've been dismissive of anime, this is the film that is waiting to convert you. Well, assuming you watch it subtitled; the dub is servicable but perhaps not what you would call compelling. If you must have English dialogue, opt for Porco Rosso instead. I mean, it's a mid-20s period piece about Mediterranean air-pirates starring a ace pig. How could you possibly go wrong?

Whisper of the Heart - That said, as much as I love Porco Rosso, Whisper of the Heart is my favorite Studio Ghibli film. Whisper is a lushly animated urban romance about a teenage girl whose first love (a driven young violin maker) inspires her to write her first novel (which provides delightful fantasy sequences by Miyazaki). It's a beautiful film, with top-notch animation, lovely backgrounds, and positively tons of heart. Alas, Whisper has yet to be released in the US, but hopefully Disney will get it out the door soon, along with another favorite non-Miyazaki Ghibli flick, Isao Takahata's Only Yesterday, which combines 60s nostalgia with the subtle delights of contemporary rural life. Keep an eye out for 'em; in the meantime, three of Takahata's other films are available in the US: Pom Poko, an odd, magical tale of tanuki (think racoons) battling against urban development; My Neighbors the Yamadas, a collection of short animated gag segments about an average Japanese family, with whimsical animation in a pastel style; and the devestating WWII film Grave of the Fireflies, which is absolutely guaranteed to reduce you to tears and is positively crucial viewing.

I could go on at length (particularly about anime), but in the interests of (mild) restraint I'll simply list a few more faves: Arcadia of my Youth, Memories, Crayon Shin-chan: The Adult Empire Strikes Back, and Flying Ghost Ship.

Finally, a few of my fave animated shorts:

What's Opera, Doc? - My pick for the finest animated short of all time (with Duck Amuck running a close second), this classic train-wreck between the Looney Tunes and Wagnerian opera is a triumph across the board: animation, style, acting (and singing!), you name it.

Snow White - The Fleischer Brothers interpretation of the classic fairy tale (starring Betty Boop in the title role) came out four years before Disney's version and provides a stark contrast between the two studios. Whereas Disney was busy putting out the pleasant (if somewhat dull) Silly Symphonies, the Fleischers were working with the jazz greats of the time to create surreal, swinging insanity. When Snow White and her coffin are being taken down into the Mystery Cave (read: Hell) by the Wicked Stepmother, Koko the Clown follows behind and begins to sing Cab Calloway's "St. James Infirmary Blues" - with Calloway himself providing Koko's dance moves via rotoscoping. Simply astonishing. Other Fleischer faves include Koko's Earth Control and Bimbo's Initiation, but nothing tops Snow White.

Red Hot Riding Hood - It's hard to pick a Tex Avery favorite, but my libido has to go with this one. Ah, Red. Ahem, sorry, where was I? Oh, yes, this one's got all the Avery touches - wildly exagerated animation, sight gags a plenty, and more slapstick than you can shake a, er, stick at. Runner-ups include King-Size Canary (a hysterical exercise in escalation), The Cat Who Hated People (and, really, who can blame him?), and one of his early Warner toons, I Love To Singa, with Owl Jolson doing a wonderful send-up of The Jazz Singer, complete with excruciatingly catchy theme song.

Those are the big three, with plenty more shorts rounding out the category, included some of Osamu "God of Comics" Tezuka's experimental shorts (particularly Jumping and Broken-Down Film), the savage parody Bring Me The Head Of Charlie Brown, about a million other Looney Tunes, and Don Hertzfeldt's brilliant Rejected:

I've not seen some of the Animations listed, Titan A.E. and Lilo and Stitch are two I've wanted to see but haven't. Unfortunatly they came out when I was at Uni and didn't have the money for such things...

No excuse now though, really...

Akira and Ghost in the Shell are musts for me too.

You take your chances not fast-fowarding; there might be a blipvert in there somewhere, and if you look at it, your head will explode!!!

Funny you should say that, when ever the cheesy 80's cinzano bianco advert comes on I kick off, just like River.

Must be subliminal messages.

I've got a ton of favorites, but the only one I can think of that hasn't already been mentioned is Nelvana's 1983 sleeper "Rock and Rule". Way ahead of its time, nearly bankrupted the company. Finally available on DVD.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086203/

As for a single favorite, that's a toughie, but I'm sure it'd be a Studio Ghibli film, either "Porco Rosso" or "Kiki's Delivery Service".

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Huh. Well, I not only lived thru my own series of catoons, I got to watch the newer ones w/ our daughter. So...

Iron Giant. I love the story and Vin Diesel does a great giant.

Sleeping Beauty. It's so very beautiful.

Fantasia. But only parts of it.

And one that I don't love but I can't get out of my head because it was so goddamn interresting AND annoying: Fushigi Yugi

I loved the Frazetta illustrations, guess I'll have to look up Fire and Ice!

Wowsers, Fnordchan, you really know your stuff!!! Thanks for mentioning Cagliostro. I'm sure you're familiar with Spielberg's comment that it was the best adventure movie he had ever seen.

The Fleischer Snow White sounds very cool! Did you ever see the Fleischer short with the squirrels talking about the end of mankind in the great war? Any idea what it was called?

Yep, and he's absolutely right. Cagliostro is completely freakin' awesome on every level. I love Porco Rosso just a little bit more, but that's more of a personal reaction.

It's really incredible. Basically, any time a jazz great appears on Snow White it's a great toon. See also another Cab Calloway appearance in "Minnie the Moocher" and the surreal image of Louis Armstrong's head flying through the air and menacing our heroes in "I'll Be Glad When You're Dead You Rascal You". Unfortunatly, there's not a particularly good Betty Boop DVD collection available, but this volume is a) servicable and b) dirt cheap at five bucks a pop, and includes "Snow White" among others:

That one's new to me, but it sounds terrific! If you figure out what it's called, please post in this thread!

I'm not really one for cartoons and such. That having been said I have really loved watching some cartoons with my kids.

My favourites are :

Toy Story(s) - Many, many, many viewings.

Shrek(s) - Many, many viewings.

Incredibles - Many viewings.

Madagaskar - Many viewings.

A really wonderful childrens cartoon series that I would heartily recommend to anyone with young children (any age) is "Little Bear". Totally appropriate for children any age and enjoyable for the parents as well.

This has turned out to be tougher than I would have thought. In that I'm only going by theatre released animated features and not television or video based programs, such as the episode based shows I catch on US televison or through Japanese anime. Nor am I choosing from short format animated features such as the original Looney Tunes, MGM Cartoons, Fliecher Bros. Superman episodes, Disney shorts, Popeye, Terrytoons, ect. And believe me, not being able to choose from everything has made this quite the chore. :)

1. Akira
2. Fantasia
3. Aladdin
4. Princess Mononoke (Mononoke-hime)
5. Nausicca: The Valley of the Wind
6. Heavy Metal
7. Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer
8. Sleeping Beauty
9. Toy Story 2
10. The Incredibles
11. Tarzan
12. Who framed Roger Rabbit (There's enough in there to constitute an animated feature for me.)

I read half this thread and didn't see a SINGLE aladdin, which, IMO, is the best Disney movie EVER!

I also like some animes like Akira, and Princess Mononoke, and the Evangelion movie/s, what with Evangelion being the best anime ever and all.

I'm going to have to go with the little-know (here in the US at least) "The Snowman", with music by Howard Blake. It's done in the old-style pencil drawings, and had no words, just music. It's absolutely wonderful, and I get teary-eyed every time!

No power in the 'verse can stop me!

Akira. I bought it on DVD a few weeks back, but they've redubbed it without the swearing so it's just not as good any more. Ah well. Still Akira.
