has anyone else been reading the comics that Joss Whedon has been writing...
no, not 'Serenity', I mean 'Astonishing X-men'
??
I just read #12 which is the ending to the first series, and I'm confused.
I guess the big X-men fans will know, but I don't know...
who were those guys in the last panel??

They were the newest incarnation of the Hellfire Club, the group that Emma aka The White Queen belonged to before she became one of the good guys.
You can read about them in the X-Men arc (collected in trade paperback) Dark Phoenix.
I could give you the whole storyline but I didn't know how much/little you knew about comics.

...cause Justice is the one thing you should always find.

That's The Hellfire Club. They are very significant in X-Men lore.

I stopped reading the X-Men at issue 215 so as you can see it's been a while.

I can tell you that Emma used to be their White Queen and at one point Jean Grey was the Black Queen. And they dressed like lingerie models. It was quite nice.

If memory serves me correctly, the Hellfire Club first appeared during the classic Claremont/Byrne run. Off the top of my head I'd say in 130's. But I could have that completely bolloxed up.

Since we're talking Marvel Comics, the history is undoubtedly long and convoluted.

Someone with a lot more knowledge than I may respond with a much more detailed (and helpful)answer.

Whether they do or not, I would suggest you start'a Googlin' if you want to know the history. Also talk to some people at your local comics shop, I'm sure someone there can debrief you.

By the way, the Hellfire Club actually existed in England, I believe in the 1700's.

Also there's an episode of the British TV show "The Avengers" in which Mr. Steed and Mrs. Peel encounter a group that fancies themselves a modern Hellfire Club. In that episode, Mrs. Peel also dresses like a lingerie model. For some reason, this is my favorite episode.

So if you Google "The Hellfire Club" you may get a lot of entries that have nothing to do with the X-Men.

Happy Hunting.

Thank you Tjack and BatMarlowe!
When I saw the panel I was lost...like 'how do I even find out?'
I guess Joss was assuming a greater understanding of the X-men saga,
but myself I'd only see the movies (which tell nothing)
and Joss' own series....

actually that isn't entirely true, some friends sent me to some great online sites,
and I bought the trade paperback of Wolverine's Origin story (which was really nicely done).

So thanks to you I now have an actual name to google!

I read some of those classic comic books years ago, it would be cool to read them again

Tjack:

Doesn't The Hellfire Club make some appearances that occur after what's in the Dark Phoenix TP?

The Hellfire Club sorta come and go...you know, they just use them when they want Sebastian Shaw to throw his weight around (no pun intended)...

That's what I thought. I was just wondering if there were any further H-Club appearances that would be something you HAD to know in order to appreciate Astonishing #13. Of course you couldn't possibly know that since we don't know the story yet, but you know what I mean.

I need to ask a question about the ending as well. Mind the spoilers.

There are four people pictured. I was only able to recognize Sebastian Shaw and Cassandra Nova. Who are the other two (if they do have names)?

And um, isn't Cassandra Nova dead? I read the arc in New X-Men that involved her but can't recall how she was defeated, if at all.

I didn't know any of them except Sebastian Shaw. But I do know that if Casandra Nova is a Marvel Comics character who died, then she isn't dead.
