I rjust bought & watched "Cowboy Bebop - the movie" DVD on the strength of someone mantioning similarities with Firefly.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0275277/

Well, it's pretty good (though Firefly is better). I guess it might have been better to watch the series first, as it could have given better understanding of the set-up & characters.
I guess a similar experience Firefly virgins may have watching Serenity BDM.

Anyway, while watching it I played spot the similarity with the Serenity's crew:

Spike = Jayne + Mal
Jet = Book
Faye = Zoe
Ed = River + Kaylee

There are certain character-types that will always match up (you could draw parallels between Firefly and anything, if you wanted), but I don't think Faye and Zoe have anything even remotely in common, other than they're both female. Faye cares only about herself and has a gambling problem; Zoe is incredibly loyal and doesn't hate all men.

Etc.

I've heard the comparison before, but I'm not buying it. They're both very, very well-written sci-fi stories, but to me, the similarities end there.

While I agree with you about certain similarities I think the characterisations are very different. Certainly the drifting through space looking for work without much success is similar but there after... I dunno....

I can't really find any similarities...

Spike is truely a unique character I've been trying to think of anybody who he reminds me of and right now I can't draw on any comparisons.... Anybody?

He's kind of got the savy of Paul Newman in the Sting... but still that's not quite right. No i think he's a one off.

Both great shows though.

I'm a Browncoat and I love Bebop, but I can never draw a parallel between the two. For me it's just the feel. Good sci-fi with guns & not a lot of "spacey or treky" feel to it.

Somewhere somebody made a fan vid of Bebop to the Firefly theme. I'll have to see if I can find it.

Oh a plus for me is to watch Bebop while eating Korean Ramen.

Yep, here it is. Unless this is the link at the top of this thread. oh well.

I agree that there aren't too many direct parallels to be drawn betwene Bebop and Firefly. Which isn't to say there aren't a few similarities between the characters - Spike and Mal are both haunted by violent pasts, Jayne and Faye can be equally mercenary - but it's not why I'd suggest Bebop for the Firefly fan.

Instead, as Stillshiny mentions, it's the feel of the show, with an unorthadox crew in an old ship going after odd jobs with few questions asked. And, while the Bebop doesn't have a wild west feel of Firefly (Cowboy Andy aside) it's a universe that is run down and lived in, with rough edges to go along with the gleaming bits.

The Bebop movie is pretty good and gives an idea of what the series is like, but Cowboy Bebop really shines when you start watching the TV show. There are lots of stand alone episodes (ranging from edge-of-your-sofa action to hysterically funny comedy) with an ongoing story arc that makes an appearance here and there, culminating in an ending that hits like a kick in the teeth. And, while the characterization is a bit broader than in Firefly, by the end of the series you will care about these characters, guaranteed.

The first volume of the TV DVD release has a bit of everything that makes the series shine, with some serious episodes, some not-so-serious episodes, and the first of the plot episodes, "The Ballad of Fallen Angels", which has moments that are positively gorgeous.

So, yeah. In my book, Cowboy Bebop comes highly recommended for the Firefly fan.

YT

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

I believe it was called the Ballad of BeBop, if that helps.
