My favorite Scotty moment was in TNG when he was advising Geordie on how to handle Captains.

"... You dinna tell him how much time it would really take?!? .... How do you expect them to see you as a miracle worker if you tell them how much time it's really gonna take?!?"

Words to that effect anyway. I roared laughing that Scotty pulled to wool over Kirk's eyes for all those years.

*raising glass* Here's to you, Jimmy.

I'm sure he knew how many people loved Scotty and were inspired by him.
One of my favourite ST:TNG episodes features Scotty and I sometimes employ what I call "The Scotty Principle". ("... You dinna tell him how much time it would really take?!? .... How do you expect them to see you as a miracle worker if you tell them how much time it's really gonna take?!?")

Beam him up, indeed.
Thanks James.

He must have invented it with someone. A linguistics professor from, I believe UCLA, is actually credited with developing what is known as Klingonese.

Marc Okrand expanded it further but it was Doohan who came up with the words for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the first Klingon used anywhere.

Well that really sucks. First it was Dr. McCoy, now it's Scotty.

It's weird, I had just bought the first season of the original Star Trek yesterday. And I always thought that if FIREFLY had continued, and they intorduced Kaylee's family, I always thought it would've been cool as Hell if they cast Jimmy Doohan as Kaylee's dad.

He'll definitly be missed.

ANARKO

May he rest in peace. The world has lost a war hero.

Here is some of his courageous exploits during World War II:

At the outbreak of World War II, aged 19, he joined the Royal Canadian Artillery, and was eventually commissioned as a lieutenant. His first combat assignment was the invasion of Normandy at Juno Beach on D-Day. Shooting two snipers along the way, Doohan's unit made its way to higher ground and took defensive positions. That night, crossing between command posts at 11:30, he took six hits from a German machine gun: four in his leg, one in the chest, and one through his middle right finger. The chest bullet was stopped by his silver cigarette case; the shot finger was amputated, and on screen he would generally conceal this. Despite his wounds, Doohan remained in the military, trained as a pilot for the Royal Canadian Air Force, and flew an artillery observation plane, though he was once labeled the "craziest pilot in the Canadian Air Forces".

Canada has lost one of its greatest generation.

I had the honor to meet and talk with Mr. Doohan and De Forest Kelly years ago at a Sci-Fi convention in St. Louis. They were both extremely friendly and easy to talk to. De was such a sweet soul, with a friendly smile that reached his eyes. A real Southern gentleman! Jimmy was just as nice, with that great grin of his, a quick wit, and he always had a story to tell.

They will both be missed. I know De was there to greet James when he arrived today!

Rest in peace Mr. Doohan.

Yeah, I spoke with him at length after a Star Trek convention. He was kind of jolly. Nothing like his matter-of-fact character in Star Trek, and doesn’t have even a hint of a Scottish accent. It sucks that he died. He was getting on up there though. I remember thinking, when I talked to him, how much older he looked then I expected.

Ladies and Gents, Mr Doohan was Canadian. The Scottish accent was strictly for the TV.
A Molson may be a more fitting drink for him. Although I suppose it wouldn't hurt to drop a shot of Dewars in it. With a name like Doohan I can't help but think a tartan or two is in his family tree.

Husband and I had a memorial yesterday evening for him, we watched "Trouble with Tribbles" and had the last bit of our 21 year old Scotch that we keep for special occasions. He had a good life. I was devastated last year when they announced that he is suffering from Alzheimer's. Myself have seen to many people slowly deteriorate and vegetate for years. It seems like a blessing to me that his suffering was "only" one year but it still hurts to see someone as magnificent as "Scotty" suffer from it. May he have found his peace.

Doohan was an accomplished radio and TV actor who specialized in accents.
The "Scottish" he did for TV is more toned down for American ears than a true Scottish accent.
(While I was in college, I dated a Scotsman. Believe me, peeps, Doohan toned his accent way way back! )
Cheers, Jimmie!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

You will be missed James. You were so nice to both my wife & myself at Dragon Con back in 2001 & though I was never a huge Star Trek fan, I did always like the original series and loved "Scotty". Could be my own Scottish blood caused me to click w/ his character, but what was not to love about Scotty.

"You can't take the sky from me..."

Well Mr. Doohan, that's rightfully so now. Go see what you can see, no boundaries now.

Actually Kirk kinda knew it, cause he busted him once, tho I don't remember where...
Went something like this.

Kirk - "Mister Scott, do you always multiply your repair estimates by four ?"
Scott - "Of course sir, how else do you think I work miracles!"

KNADLES

I know I'm late with this, but I feel the need to add something here...

It's easy, with modern eyes, to look back on Star Trek as nothing more than an old show with somewhat campy, dated production values. After twenty or thirty years of being spoiled by special effects spectaculars, Star Trek's simplistic sets, polyester uniforms, and the same cheesy planet (with different color filters) on the viewscreen week after week sometimes give the impression that the show was less that it really was.

How many TV shows, in fifty years of trying, have given us even one legendary, culturally-embedded character? Star Trek gave us a good four or five, not the least of which was Scotty. He was the regular guy. Spock was the brain, McCoy was the heart, Kirk was the, um...drive, but Scotty was the one who showed up and got the job done. Sometimes heroic, sometimes funny, sometimes brilliant, and always to be counted on if the ship needed just one more ounce of power, a crewman needed to be beamed out of danger at the last possible instant, or to get the drop on a bad guy who underestimated the ship's canny engineer. James Doohan nailed it for all of us, and he nailed it so well that the rest of his life was affected and guided by his simple role on a short-lived and mildly popular TV show.

Firefly, like all good things, owes its existence to that which came before it. When Gene Roddenberry went to the network with his little idea for "Wagon Train in space," he struck a blow for quality science fiction (and quality TV programming in general). At the time, the only good science fiction that had ever been on television was a couple of (admittedly well done) anthology shows. Star Trek gave us more than an upgrade from childish Irwin Allen series featuring people in tin foil suits--it gave us a mythology, along with a view of the future that has proven surprisingly influential. Its fans have included world leaders, Nobel Prize winners, authors, activists, and a geeky kid with a bag of Doritos and an RC plopped in a recliner on the south side of Chicago.

Star Trek and Firefly have a lot in common. Both are rich in characters and stories and groundbreaking for their era. Both were shown a lack of respect by network TV. Both were made into major motion pictures. We have a pleasant future to look forward to if Firefly can be half, no, even a quarter as influential as Star Trek was.

Without Star Trek, there is no Babylon 5, there is no Battlestar Galactica (a mixed blessing, to be sure), and there is no Firefly. Star Trek paved the way, and though by now that particular horse may have run the track a few too many times, in the end, it gave us all it had, and it had a lot.

Thank you, Mr. Doohan, for being a part of so much. Thank you for storming the beach at Normandy, thank you for treating us fans with respect, and thank you, thank you, thank you for Scotty.

Rest in Peace.
