I hate the costume.
I HATE the costume.
I HATE THE costume.
I HATE THE COSTUME.

But Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor? Hmmm...That sounds good...

BATMARLOWE

The costume doesn't look good, I agree. In the one picture I've seen, Brandon Routh looks like a guy who made a great Superman costume for a contest. He doesn't look like Superman. The first time I saw a poster for SUPERMAN THE MOVIE with Chris Reeve, I said: "That guy looks like Superman."

Kevin Spacey is a good choice for Luthor, though. We'll just have to see the story they tell and how they tell it. I don't think that much about how good it may or may not be, to tell you the truth. The only movie I wonder about these days is SERENITY.

the costume looks like, well the Superman costume. I love Kevin Spacey, but he's not enough to make me want to see that. I agree with Batmarlowe, the actor looks like a fan at a con, and the actress doesn't look like Lane.

I picked up the Entertainment Weekly #826/827 with the Must See list. Had them on the cover. Unimpressed. The bad news, these two were #s 1-2,
The good News, Our BDHs(cast of Serenity) are #s 14-22 out of 122. More interesting than 1-2,are #23-24 Tom Welling (Smallville's Clark Kent) and Maggie Grace (Lost) are together in a remake of Carpenter's "The Fog".
Also noteworthy #26 Profit:the complete series on DVD.

CALLMEATH

None whatsoever. In my opinion, Superman is one of the lamer comic book characters. No brains! No training! All those powers and he does nothing! How Christopher Reeves managed to make him seem cool is just a testament to his awesomeness.

The best thing Superman ever did was get his butt whooped in The Dark Knight Returns and The Dark Knight Strikes Back. In fact, I think I'll go read them again and laugh at Superman getting beat.

"I want you to remember Clark. In all the years to come. In your most private moments. I want you to remember my hand at your throat. I want you to remember the one man who beat you."

Wow! This post seems kinda angry! Sorry about that. Must be a bit of Evil Ath coming through.

I must admit to only having a fleeting interest in Superman as a kid reading comics, but Chris Reeve in the first movie made him real to me. After Superman II, I realized there was basically nowhere to go with the story, what to do after you've saved the world from 3 others like yourself? Why wouldn't Superman stop wars? They tried to address that in Superman 4, and failed miserably. Help develope fusion with the aid of his invulnerability, and super know-how? That would change our planet, drastically.
Lois and Clark was a breezy, romantic look at the characters, in a more or less problem free fantasy world, which is why I liked it.
But Superman on a real Earth in a feature film has to be believable, and I don't think there is a way that can happen, especially now, with world events unfolding as they are.

Go ahead Singer, do the impossible. I'll be the first to kowtow if you do.

Only Donner can make a Super-film Chrisisall

my opinion with based on what's really selling at the box-office... Spider-Man 1&2, Batman Begins... I would venture the guess that Superman is gonna suck as much as Batman and Spider-Man...

Spider-Man is totally gay... meaning homosexual... not some ebonics-style definition that Eminem wants to give it...

and Batman Begins is sooooooooooo dumb... I was seriously wondering if George Lucas had directed it... and call me dumb if it gets you off but the plot-lines and character names (Gordon in particular) were explained after the scene in which you needed to know the information...

You know you've seen a Summer Blockbuster when you walk out of the theater saying "and hey when that guy... what's his name, oh nevermind, the character played by Rutger Hauer" or "the character played by Morgan Freeman..."

I will most definately watch it, but I doubt that it will be half the quality of the original Superman movie. The original Superman movie remains my all time favorite comic book movie. After watching Batman Begins, I thought I'd rather read an issue of Detective Comics than sit through a 2 hour movie. It tried very hard to capture the feel of the comic book, but it just isn't possible. Superman is the only movie that has done that. Most likely, Superman Returns will be just another Superhero movie .

I've never been big on Superman anyway, so I don't see myself seeing it and liking it. The costume has always looked like pajamas to me, so I think the one Brandon Routh is wearing isn't that bad. Of course, it still just looks like he's runnin' around in blue skin and underwear - pajamas, or blue skin and underwear. Take your pick.

The boots - I've got that scene from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back stuck in my head.

Eliza Dushku's character (Missy? Sissy? I forget): "Shut up before I shoot you where you stand in your pansy red booties."
Jay: (looking down) "Holy s***, I AM wearing pansy red booties." (to Bob) "Why the f*** didn't you tell me?"

I'm right there with ya on that.
I'm just waiting for a Donner edited version of Superman II for dvd, I just can't deal with all of Lester's crap in the second, especially when I have a lot of the good Donner stuff in a tape off the ABC extended broadcast version from the eighties- it's rough, but Donner genius shows through.

I'll try to address this comment in an articulate and thoughtfull manner...
WTF are you on about???
In what way 'gay'? What, he wears tight pants so you can see the delineation of his athletic, luscious bum?
Maybe you should look in the mirror, closet-boy.

All I know about the movie so far is they cast someone who doesn't look like superman to me and that they created a costume that just looks silly.

So far it's not looking good.

The costume in the first couple of Lois And Clark episodes was similar in that the 'S' was small, and they got wise and fixed it right away. Even so, I liked that a lot better than the 'little red bootie'/low riser brief/dirty pajama look for Superman Returns!!
They might have time to fix it, if they're smart.

What are they thinkin' Chrisisall

The extended television broadcast of Superman 2 is a rare animal. My friend told me about a scene in which the General Zod, and the other two break into the White House, take the machine guns away from the guards, and just start wasting everyone in sight. I thought it was a riot that ABC would actually throw in scenes of more graphic violence. I'm sure thats a first, and most likely only time that will ever happen. I really hope it gets released on dvd.

I still have it on VHS tape, Zod just fires on the guards like it's a toy he's holding. Also another guard falls to his knees in front of Ursa, who kicks him square in the face, although ABC trimmed the actual shot of the guard's face getting smashed.
It was mean.

Wasn't Hugh Laurie(Dr. House) originally cast for Perry White? I was going to see it just for him.

Too bad they recast the role, cuz the rest of the movie looks like crap.

I think the probable thing to look to is: did you enjoy Bryan Singer's X-Men films? If you did, chances are you'll like this. If you didn't, you probably won't.

The costume looks pretty much the same as the comic/movie one, we're not talking a "yellow spandex?" complete overhaul here.

Bit weird though that the guy playing grown up Superman is two years younger than the guy playing him as a teenager.

You know what? I liked the first X-Men a lot. The Michael Kamen (God do I miss him) music was great, and the script was cool. They weakend our heroes powerwise, but it wasn't too bad.
X-Men 2 had Kelley Hu, Nightcrawler, a great mansion fight, and a more epic feel, but missed the mark in some key areas.
First: let's incapacitate Professor X...AGAIN! The music sucked (in comparrison to Kamen's stuff). There was a LOT of preaching ( "have you tried not being a mutant?" F-ing slap me in the face with it, whydoncha?). The X plane can do incredible speeds- then not. The plane is ultra manuverable- then not. Storm can zap stuff with lightning bolts- but she can't hit missles with them.
And the narration in the end is a plain rip-off of Spock at the end of Wrath of Khan (let's forget that the X plane is a rip-off of Firefox).
Singer is very talented at getting actors to spout interesting dialogue, but the longer he makes super-hero movies, the more apparent I think it will become that he is only a competant action director, relying on second units and stunt co-ordinators, hence the uneven and contrived feel of the film (X-Men 2) as a whole.
I think Brett Ratner's third installment of X-Men will be a huge improvement over the first two, even if the script is weak, just because he understands action better (working with Jackie Chan twice never hurts), and is a more talented overall film-maker.
And Superman Returns will be slick, well produced, good lookin', uneven junk.

I could be wrong...nah Chrisisall

Was Mary-Jane a man in drag? I fail to see how Spiderman was homosexual. Also, um, does being gay mean that you're not good, or that a movie with gay people in it is bad? If spiderman is gay, and anybody out there knows him, could you give him my phone number? I'd appreciate it.

I liked X-men 2. It had drama and action and interesting characters. The acting was good except Halle Berry who looked like she was waiting for a bus through the whole film.

Superman has always been kind of boring to me. He's morally perfect, physically unstoppable, and just too darn good looking. He has nowhere to go. So unless they can come up with a decent character arc for him, I'll be rooting for Lex Luther again. Now Lex is a normal human who is willing to take on someone as powerful as superman. How cool is that?!

Wow. never seen so much nagativity thrown at what I've considered good superhero films (excpet the classic Superman by Donner which does still stand pretty tall)

I for one loved Batman Begins- it sure as heck was better than the other 4 movies.

I do have serious reservations about Superman Returns but being an uber-Supes fan I'll see it.

The first X-Men had a decent script. The second one had a gimicky script that was workable, I just don't think Singer is in his element with the big action thing. He makes great small films, and he should stick with that.
BTW Superman: the Movie is as good as it gets. Donner and Reeve cannot be topped!

I'm just tired of film-makers who say," Make the fights like Matrix, do the Pyro vs. cops scene like Firestarter, have the X plane fly like Firefox," etc.
It's good enough that I own X-Men 2, but I really don't watch it very often.
And yes, Lex is the key to making Superman interesting, most other villians are there to be super-undone, yawn.
