tvshowsondvd.com reported today that the SAAB box set will be available at Best Buy this summer.

Apparently this is not a rumor, it's the real thing!

Yes! This was by far my favorite sci-fi series pre-Firefly. I'd looked into the homemade dvds on various web sites, but an actual official box set will be excellent. Hoo-rah!

I was SO pissed when this was cancelled. It ended on that huge cliff-hanger and that was it! No resolution. I think that was the first time I started to hate F*X.

I hope the dvd has some commentary about what they would have done in the next season, so we can get a little closure, at least.

I remember seeing the woman who played Vansen in a movie a few years ago, but that's it. The name of the movie.....escapes me at the moment. If I remember it later, I'll do an edit.

EDIT: OK, just remembered. The actress was Kristen Cloke and she appeared in a mediocre teen terror flick called "Final Destination". And I also just remembered that Rod Rowland was in the very first episode of season five of "Angel". Duh! Can't believe I didn't think of that one immediately.

They've been on more but I've noticed:

Joel de la Fuente (Wang) on ER (just couple eps) among other shows.

Tucker Smallwood (Ross) has been on Freinds and some other sci-fi shows.

Kristen Cloke (Vansen) has been on X-Files and Millennium.

Other than that, they seem to have been busy (most at least).

My fav eps of S:AAB were the 2 Dear Earth and the one that was tied to it (I forget if Dear Earth was the first part or second part). Then the 2 eps that comprised the season/series finale.

I was overseas when this show originally aired on Fox but it was syndicated to overseas pretty quickly so I caught it in '97. Then later found out there was only that one season. *garg* I'd been so waiting for the continuation. Too bad it didn't build up enough of a fanbase to make a movie happen. :( Wished SciFi channel would have done like a 2-4 hour miniseries/tv movie conclusion to it though. grrr...

I so hope this is true. I almost bought a region free set from the UK for for $100.00, but here it may be less. I have not found anything on Space: Above and Beyond on the Best Buy sight. Other sights like Amazon have only something called "Above and Beyond" which is actuall an Australian documentary on flight and space flight. I had them all recorded off tv then I transferred them to dvd rw before the tapes were total goners. Can't wait for a "professional" set with all the extras.

The site TVShowsonDVD.com has been keeping an eye on the official release date, which was rumored to be this summer.

It was supposed to be released first to Best Buy, (like Tru Calling Season 2 and a special box set of Spike episodes from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, both of which never turned up at Best Buy) but according to TVonDVD, it's going to be released to regular retailers. They just haven't heard when yet.

The Digital Bits heard it may be late 2005/early 2006. Which, yargh, I want it this summer.

Here's a fan site that has been keeping up with the possible release date:

I'm with you on the excitement that this show finally deserves a DVD release, however, there's some backstory here to share with fellow fans:

In October 2005, Fox Home Entertainment and Best Buy will team together for an exclusive release of the cult TV series "Space: Above and Beyond" on DVD. They will likely herald it as a 10th anniversary of its original airing, and pronounce its release at long last, after many a request for its release by its fans. Look closer and you will discover that this is a bare bones release that is being dumped out with little thought. The lack of participation on the upcoming release by the creators, crew and cast is not for lack of trying. After discovering the release of a bare-bones "Space: Above and Beyond" DVD set on a DVD-rumours website of all things, Hard Eight Pictures (production company of Glen Morgan and Jim Wong, the creators and show-runners of the series) tried to connect with Fox's home entertainment department to find out what happened, seeing as they had pitched the idea of putting together a great set for the fans several months earlier that was met with encouragement.

Glen Morgan and Jim Wong were not interested in slapping on a couple of last minute audio commentaries -- they wanted to do it right and had an active hand, as many filmmakers are beginning to do with the advent of DVD. Plans to round up the entire cast and creative team for a retrospective documentary, original shorts, at least 6 actor/episode-specific commentaries were in place, old directors cuts and effects tests were pulled out of attics for archival purposes (everything was saved !). Morgan and Wong are very proud of their work on this series, appreciated the fans of the show and even offered to finance the special features themselves. After inquiries about delaying this surprise Best Buy release, so that they could be involved, the marketing department claimed that they did not see this show as viable enough to warrant a 7th disc of special features. And so, despite Hard Eight's best efforts, Fox has chosen not to involve anyone who had anything to do with the series with this upcoming DVD release.

Please note -- I'm not speaking on behalf of Morgan and Wong here. I'm just one cog that was involved in developing the proposed extra features with Hard Eight, and just a well informed longtime devotee of the series. I realize that "S:AAB" isn't nearly as popular as "The Simpsons" or "24" or "The X-Files", but to completely ignore the value (financial, entertainment, or otherwise) of the participation of those who made the show in the first place, the value of bonus features made with eager participation of everyone, with all of the work offered to them essentially for free... is baffling to me. I'm not trying to get anyone to start any kind of revolt, campaign or petition because it's probably too late and I don't know if it will get anywhere at the end of the day. I just wanted to write this so the show's fans and DVD fans alike would know what's being peddled to them this fall and why. AMF.

This is spooky, I live in the UK and my friend Elaine in NC just emailed a comment on the proposed S:AAB box set whereby AMF is quoted as saying that in September/October 2005 Fox Home Entertainment and Best Buy are teaming up to bring out the series in a box set for the 10th Anniversary. That's where the good news gets shafted by the Fox mentality.
Fox want to bring out a bare-bones box set, so all you get are the aired episodes and that is it. No commentaries or interviews, zilch.
Hard Eight Pictures (the production company of Glen Morgan and Jim Wong, creators and show runners of the series) tried to contact Fox as they were not interested in a sloppy job. They want to do it right and planned to round up the ENTIRE CAST and creative team for a retrospective documentary, original shorts, at least SIX actor/episode-specific commentaries, old director's cuts and effects tests etc. On top of that they even offered to FINANCE the special features themselves.
Guess who wasn't interested? Apparently the Marketing Department at Fox entertainment (isn't that an oxymoron?) claimed they did not see the show as viable enough to warrant a 7th disc of special features and therefore chose not to involve anyone who had anything to do with the series in the upcoming release.
We need a letter writing campaign to show the men-in-suits what the fans want and that there is a market for a decently put together DVD package. When you love a show you want to see it treated right. Now all we need are the addressed to write to.

While I am disappointed in the decision of FOX's upper management, I do so want this DVD set. Couldn't Hard Eight make a deal with FOX, where they release a bonus disc separately? If they were going to pay for it anyways, why can't they put one out themselves? Or does FOX own the rights to all media releases for S:AAB?

Hard Eight may have created the show, but that doesn't give them any kind of distribution rights. Fox owns it. It's kind of common courtesy one would think, however, for the filmmakers to get a say in how it gets presented in any shape or form, DVD or otherwise. The show got yanked around in different timeslots constantly when it aired 10 years back and was never given a chance to find an audience. With DVD, people finally may get to see it all for the first time, which is a good thing, but for the fans or any newbies who became further interested, they will get absolutely no insight as to how it was made, or the reaction of the cast and crew as to how they feel it stands up today and that sucks. Especially since everyone was game and excited to revisit the series... well, everyone except for the network that canned it in the first place. Why should I be surprised?

All in all, it's just a stupid, disappointing decision on Fox's marketing dept. that they probably don't realize people might care about, but maybe if you write letters voicing your displeasure, it might make them think twice before shafting the filmmakers of your current and future favourite shows. It's really to the disadvantage to real fans that are already dishing out $50 for a box set and they aren't getting a single bonus feature, when there could easily have been a set full of them, made by the producers to boot! But seeing as they are Fox marketing people -- they have no idea what genre fans like.

You asked about where to send letters. Address them to Peter Staddon or Sven Davison at Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment:

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment
10201 W. Pico Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90035

By the way, AMF is a military acronym that was used in S:AAB occasionally. Depending on who you are addressing, for example, fellow Space fans, it stands for "Adios My Friend" or, in Fox's case, "Adios Motherfucker."

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

As much as I would like to say I am surprised by this most recent bit of news, taking into consideration what we all know from experience w/ Fox, it really isn't.

What kind of mornonic network would not allow the creators & cast of a show to have any hand in the creation & release of the DVD set. Not allowing the cast & creators to have commentaries or interviews will present the show to those that don't have the news so kindly provided by Frumiousb as a show that no one cared enough about to do the DVD set right.

Sure I want it, I have waited on the DVD set since Fox in their infinite ignorance cancelled the series so long ago. I want it done right though. I want commentaries, extra footage, interviews w/ cast & creators, anything they want to add on there. Why Fox chimps think there is no interest is beyond me.

Things I know about 20th Century Fox:

They hired Joss Whedon & Mutant Enemy
Helped them produce one of the finest series ever to hit TV, & two others that were more popular
When Firefly was cancelled by the network that ordered it, 20th Century Fox left the sets up for another six months to allow Joss time to shop the series to other networks
Greenlit a DVD of a series that was cancelled in the middle of its first season
Ordered the DVD with a couple of cool special features that were produced along with the series
Ordered a long & detailed "Making Of" feature to be produced for the DVD
Added seven episode-specific commentaries by nine different folks, made for the DVD

This is markedly different from above reports of 20th Century Fox's handling of SA&B.

No network has any say in the DVD of a series once they've cancelled it.

20th Century Fox (the studio that produced Buffy, Angel & Firefly, along with their DVDs) isn't the FOX Broadcasting Company (FOX network), who . . .
didn't like Joss's pilot for Firefly, &
declined to broadcast it 'til they'd
cancelled the show.

So here's the dilema....Do we buy the set, like we want to, but have to suffer with a sub-standard, lack luster release in order to finally get this show on DVD? Or do we choose not to purchase it to send a statement to whichever FOX collective group of idiots is reponsible, and chance never seeing a properly produced set due to poor sales?

As a newbie that "stumbled" onto Firefly by finding the fine folks of this shiny website, I was hoping to finally be able to see S:AAB. It comes highly recomended by several people on this site, but I would like to see it done like Firefly was. I WANT to know the background, see it in proper order, see missing footage etc..

YT - your post really points out how Fox's treatment of Firefly is so markedly different from S:AAB. In fact, reading your makes me want to cry, because I really believed S:AAB deserved and had every opportunity to get a similar DVD treatment. I was only an occasional watcher of Firefly, but I'd like to say now that damn, you guys (the fans) are really lucky. You even get a movie version of your favourite TV show, which is amazing.

Some differences between Firefly and S:AAB which might shed some insight over how two shows could be treated so differently from each other:

1. Firefly was a very recent series, and getting DVD releases for such things make it a little more straightforward, if not expected, as opposed to a 10 year old genre series

2. Joss Whedon has a much higher profile than Glen Morgan and Jim Wong. He created Buffy which was HUGE. Those box sets were massive cash cows for Fox on DVD. Similar to Whedon -- Chris Carter had X-Files, which helped him get out Lone Gunmen and Harsh Realm (which barely aired half its episodes) on DVD rather quickly after their demise.

3. Shortly after S:AAB was cancelled in 1996, the producers had to suffer watching from their production offices -- their sets being burned across the Fox lot as KINDLING for the short lived Fox series, "L.A. Firefighters" (I think it lasted 6 episodes). The more heavy duty stuff got carted away to be re-used in some way on the Joss Whedon written ALIEN RESURRECTION.

4. To perhaps flog a dead horse - despite the show's cast and crew being eager to participate in the S:AAB DVD project, including but not limited to: 6 cast/crew commentaries (also involving at least 9 people), an hour long retrospective documentary, an original short with new series mythology, a really fun interactive military lexicon, blah blah blah -- they were fooled into a false sense of security when the Fox Home Entertainment said, "that sounds great - we'll look into the realities of this", only to have them either a) forget to call back, b)ignore the whole thing or c) if I want to be totally paranoid -- sneak around behind Hard Eight's backs to make a quick, cheap deal with Best Buy because they don't care at all about this TV show

I think what gets me the most is that no one thought to contact said creators until they were forced to after continual calls by Glen Morgan to find out what the @%$#@%!# was going on (after reading rumours on The Digital Bits website about a possible Best Buy S:AAB DVD!)... this is just dirty pool, I say.

Can you tell this is a really sore subject for me?

Thank you for allowing me a forum to get this out of my system.

I say buy it. Cuz if no one buys it, it proves the Fox execs right that there wasn't a market. However, if the DVD sales do really well, they might in the future release a bonus feature disc or a new set that includes bonus features.

Yeah, I found it under documentaries as well and also get that "Sorry can't access this page, it might no longer exist...blah blah blah" message from Best Buy. So maybe they are in the process of moving it into the SciFi section? Hopefully...

Great news: they've bumped the release forward to 6-Sep, and dropped the price a wee bit:
http://tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=3836

The BB online entry has also been significantly updated

It's so cool that it'll be out in time to fill in the final leg before Serenity, when we'll all be in a tizzy of excitement!

Thanks "frumiousb" for the extras info. I agree with others: I'll buy it, 'cause I've wanted this for eons (and don't have on VHS), with the hope high sales will inspire Fox to put out a feature rich version (in which happy case, I'll donate my first edition to the library). I'm real glad I know about the total lack of features up front, otherwise, I'd have had a big let down when I picked mine up.

Thanks "PumamanRedux" for the original official release date post! I'm also a fanatic tvshowsondvd.com checker, but usually check it mid-week. Thanks to your timely post, I was able to email a Geek Buddy that night, so his first Monday morning work email was that happy news - a great way to make Monday shinier!

Whoo-hoo. I pre-ordered my copy today. I hope that it really does come out on 9/6/05. :) I can't wait.

I hope that the video quality is good, because although I have tapes of the eps, they are all so dark it's hard to see things some times.

I'm definitely buying it, even though I have it all on VCD. It's one of the best shows I've had the privilege to watch, and I've been watching them for over 40 years...

40 years! ??

Have you got some new fandangled time machine or something?

I'm not referring to watching Firefly for 40 years...I'm saying that out of all the shows in this genre (or really, many others for that matter), it's one of the best I've seen in over 40 years of watching TV. I'm no spring chicken, my dear...

Yay! 4 days until it's released!

Bestbuy.com has it on sale for $39.99 now. Too bad I already have it pre-ordered. That's what I get for being impatient...
