Okay, it's official. This week's episode, "Ariel," will either make or break Firefly as a television series on FOX for this season.

According to an article that appeared on Zap2It.com, the gang at Mutant Enemy are hoping to get word early next week from FOX as to the fate of Serenity and her crew. A pickup by FOX will mean the remaining "back nine" episodes will be produced that'll complete the first 22 episodes season for Joss Whedon's first sci-fi series on television.

I really love this show, but I dunno... kind of have a bad feeling about this...

What you people think are the chances for the show to have a chance to be pick up for a full season?

I have a really bad feeling about it too. I wish we could just know, but then again I don't because I think the news won't be good. I love this show so much. I even told myself going in not to get hooked because it will prolly get cancelled, but I couldn't help it. It was so much better than I thought it would be.

Warrick: You didn't have to wound that man.
Mal: Yeah, I know. It was just funny.

I don't really see any reason for optimism. I love the show and hope they pick it up, but based on the ratings, if I was a programming executive, and had to answer to my boss about why we should pick it up, I'd have nothing.

The show is too good to be cancelled and anyone who disagrees with me should actually watch the show before bad-mouthing it. That being said, there's no need to grind the axe if the sentence hasn't been carried out. Firefly lives, and will continute to.

YEEHAWCan't damn your outlook! I'm not counting Firefly out yet !!!!

That's a depressing article. There is no reason to believe the ratings will improve much for "Ariel." It's in the same crappy time slot.
I was really hoping they would try it in another time slot or at least air the pilot so people know what's going on. Poor planning doomed this show. I'll keep hoping until Fox announces anything official but I don't have a good feeling about it.

Likes to mess with stuffs.

I suspect what FOX is looking for is whether the ratings will hold from the prior week, or better yet, improve. What they don't want is a dip.

Is there anyone on this string who hasn't sent a zillion postcards already?

Get crackin' if you haven't!!
Do it today, it only takes a couple of hours and $10 in stamps.

MESSAGE TO FOX: Before you make any permanent decisions, try moving the show to a different night!! I'm telling you... You have a great show on your hands but you are abusing it by running it on Friday nights!

I know how you feel.

I told myself the same thing. But I feel in love with the show after watching "Out of Gas."

Fox has a pretty bad track record when it comes to giving shows time to build an audience. I didn't think 'Lone Gunmen' was all that great, but they put it in the same timeslot as 'Firefly' and just let it die on the vine...

On the other hand, JW has a lot of cache and the critics seem to be looking at the show more favorably now.

Like everyone else on this board I just wish they'd put it on at a decent time. It sure makes it tough for those of us who would like to watch the show and have a life.

Yes but they determine how much money networks make (except premium cable like Showtime or HBO...) so Nielsen ratings rule all except for Network president fiat (the latter being the force that struck down The Chronicle). Like it or not but learn to live with it because that's the world we live in.

Fox has picked up Cedric the Entertainer. Does anyone know if this is good, bad, or indifferent for Firefly?

It seems like the more shows they pick up, the worse the chances are for Firefly. I mean they have to get rid of some shows, they have a few midseason programs all ready to go. It's hard to be optimistic when there's so much going against it. I hope fox surprises me...

It's been a hard show to predict what its fate will be. On one hand, it's still on the air. Fox has the habit on being quick to the gun with canceling its shows ("girls club" lasted two episodes, while "The Grubbs" never made it to air). At the same time, it picked up "John Doe" and "Fastlane," both low rated shows, for a full season. It's a sign that Fox is willing to be patient for shows that they believe in.
At the end, it would probably come down to money. The show is expensive to produce. Modest hits like "Witchblade" and "Farscape" were canceled because of these money issues. Truthfully, I wouldn't be surprised at whatever the show's fate will be, but if I had to guess, if they are willing to keep the show on for this long, it will probably be picked up.
