Having recently won Cinescape's X-Men 3 Director poll, it's obvious fans would like to see Joss Whedon helm the X-Men 3 movie. However, according to an article published by SCI FI Wire, while Whedon is eager for the job, his less than fortunate past dealings with FOX's film division is a possible hindrance.

Here's an excerpt:

Quote:

"Nobody has approached me about the X-Men franchise," Whedon said in an interview. But, he added, "would I like to make an X-Men movie? That'd be bitchin'. And I really think that, you know, I actually really like those actors, and I really like those characters, and I think there's a lot that could be done with it, and I think it would be a romp. But I'm not setting my sights on that."

I love Joss. But, I would love to see him remain focused on, oh say Serenity 2 or the 4-6 Buffy/Angel TV movies that rumors were spread, may be a possibility. Bryan Singer has done a fantastic job with both of the previous films in the X-men franchise and I honestly hope they keep him. Of course if the have X-men movie spins-off into the other teams, then why not have different directors for the diffent teams? Maybe after Serenity is a big hit FOX's film division will "get over it", and pick up Joss for X-force movies or whatever may come down the line.

Hmm. Whedon to direct "Kitty Pryde goes to College" (as that's his favorite character)?

"Hilarity ensues when mutant Kitty Pryde enrolls in Columbia Univerisity and tries to keep her ability to pass through walls a secret. Guest starring Patrick Stewart."

"FOX! Where the shit hits the fans." - Tim Minear

I'm not sure if Joss and X-men would work out

Don't get me wrong I'm sure some of those Batman and Spiderman films are very good, Tim Burton and Sam Raimi have done great with these types of films

but I have also seen very talented directors take on these types of Super hero movies and something just didn't work out, the movie didn't click together and it ended up costing everyone

Although I would imagine chances that Joss and the X-men idea work out great
are much higher

I would LOVE for Joss to carry on the X-Men film franchise for an installment or two (or three).

The X-men films demand a director/writer that understands group dynamics and how to direct an ensemble cast. Joss with his intelligence and sense of humor brings out the best in his talent as a director and writes brilliant stories.

X-Men 3 and Joss Whedon are a natural fit.

Plus there's all of this to consider:

* Avi Arad (Pres, Marvel Enterprises) WANTS Joss to do a Marvel film and has for awhile.

* Joss is already employed by another division of Marvel as writer of the acclaimed Astonishing X-Men

* Joss script doctored the first X-Men film.

* Joss will soon have a $50 million action film under his belt

Frankly, I'd be surprised if Joss doesn't do X-Men 3.

Don't get me wrong. I'd love to see it come together that way. If they had to get someone other than Bryan Singer, then Joss is by far the only choice. It's just that I heard when they tried to get someone other than Bryan for X2, all of the cast said "Nope, call when you've signed Bryan." Which sounds like the same sort of dedication a Joss cast has to him. Either of them does X3 and I'll be happy. Many of my friends were/are big fans of Nightcrawler, and had concerns that they would not get it right. All were very pleased with the final Nightcrawler, and look forward to seeing him return. I hope they do as good of a job with Gambit or anyone else they introduce in X3.

EDIT: just did some poking around online and found that Bryan Singer is apparently off of X3 due to working with WB on an upcoming Superman film. SO, they are looking for a new director for X3. Any ideas on how we can pound the name Joss into their heads????

There's another (minor 1 blurb) interview with him up at AICN saying much the same thing, if anyone's interested.

EDIT - Nevermind, it's the exact same bit.

This is the story from www.aintitcoolnews.com :

Quote:

Joss Whedon Talks To Hercules About X-MEN 3!!
I am – Hercules!!

I finally got to meet Joss Whedon yesterday. I can’t tell you everything we talked about – yet. But here’s one of the most interesting parts I can relay:
“I have not been offered [“X-Men 3”]," said Whedon. “Would I like to make an X-Men movie? That’d be bitchin’. I actually really like those actors and I really like those characters and there’s a lot that could be done with it and it’d be a romp. But I’m not setting my sights on that, I setting my sights on exactly one thing, which is [Whedon’s feature directorial debut, “Serenity.”]
“Serenity” wraps principal photography in about 10 days.
Would the folks at Marvel like to hire Whedon? “Major Tom” sent in this snippet of an IGN Filmforce interview with Marvel Enterprises head Avi Arad from February:
IGNFF: At one point, wasn't Joss Whedon up for (Iron Man)?

ARAD: Joss Whedon never wrote a draft of it. We wished! Believe me, we tried very hard, but he got busy with Firefly.

IGNFF: Are there any hopes to tap him again at some point for another project?

ARAD: Oh yeah! We're going to land him… He's a tough cookie, but we'll get him.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I really, really would love to see Whedon write the next X-Men movie, especially considering what I assume is coming next in the storyline. That would just be too excellent for words, what with the thing and the other thing and the other things I-don't-know-anything-about.

I agree. I would love to see what Joss could do with Xmen3 especially the Dark Phoenix Saga. We all know how well he can write for women.

Bryan Singer is definitely OFF the X3 project as director. He could still executive produce... but what the hell does that mean, really?

Fox made him clear out his offices on their lot even.

Fox, apparently, is not very happy with Singer taking on huge genre-related projects elsewhere.

Go Joss!!!
Personally, I believe Joss could assemble a great team to produce Buffy-verse films and still write/direct an X-Feature. He is that amazing.
