I'm getting a little confused, What is Wash's name becuase I was looking at a site on Serenity and it posted the actors names with their charater names and it read Jerry Lee "Wash" Warren. I'm just wondering is Wash's name Jerry Lee Warren?

There is no canon or press/media evidence that it is Jerry Lee Warren. The closest anyone has ever come to justifying this is in "Our Mrs. Reynolds" when Mal says "Good work {garbled} lee." It very well could be "Good work Kaylee" just flubbed, but people have said that it is Jerry Lee, and that in that he somehow refers to Wash, despite the fact that the camera cuts directly to Kaylee who says, "Weren't quick enough to help."

Recent posts by someone who may in fact be Alan Tudyk indicate that this is not the case. He says that it is Hoban Washburne. This is corroborated to a degree by Nathan Fillion, who once posted on the OB that one of Wash's "real names" was Washburn, or a variant thereof.

Hello
I did a search on the web site that has the scripts for Firefly you are right Sarahect the reference to Wash's name occurs in that episode thanks that shortened my search. The quote is as follows:

"WASH
It's not pretty, but we can steer
enough to turn the hell around.
MAL
Nice work, Jerry Lee."

I hope that helps a little

But did that script come from an official source, or was it some well-meaning fan's transcript?

Cool. I added it to my favorites list. But I couldn't find out how they were compiled. If it were simply from someone listening to the show, taking shorthand or something, they could make mistakes in writing down the words spoken by the actors.

They're mirrors of the fan transcripts from Whoa, Good Myth: http://firefly.shriftweb.org/index.shtml .

The shooting script and the DVD captions say "Nice work, Kaylee" and KAYLEE responds, not Wash.

Hoban Washburne is full name of his character

I'm sure this has already been addressed, but that quote is wrong. In both the Final Writer's Draft and the Shooting Script, Mal says "Nice work, Kaylee." Never trust a transcript.

I agree, you walk a dangerous line whenever you take ANY transcript aside from an official one handed down from Mount Sinai by JW as canon.

The Jerry Lee Warren rumor has got to be the most pervasive of all Firefly related rumors. It's almost attained Urban Legend status. Joss should somehow work a reference into the BDM

I watched the DVD with the captions on and you guys are right (of course) Mal does address Kaylee and not Wash. I'll take your advice for the future and not trust the scripts.

No, no. Just not the transcripts. There's a big, big difference between shooting scripts and transcripts. ('Course, the transcribed shooting scripts online might contain typos and such... but still, generally more reliable. I'd scan all mine to PDFs, but I'm far too lazy. Now I'm just kinda rambling. Sorry.)

Probably contributing to the myth is Alan's joking reference to the way that the Wash character responds almost like Jerry Lewis during one of the flying segments (think Professor Frink in the Simpsons if you haven't seen the original Nutty Professor).

I can think of a couple situations where occasionally the actor thought that a character had a particular name but was later corrected. Apparently George Takei joked that Sulu's first name was Walter, which apparently grew out of a joke about Walter Koenig and he being confused. For a while, some people thought that it WAS actually Walter, then, somehow, it became Hikaru Walter Sulu in some references.

This often grows out of the fact that no one has actually officially given a character a first (or occasionally, last) name, and fan obsession being what it is, a misheard line leads to assumption, assumption leads to repetition, repetition (occasionally) leads to canonization.

Given the goofy sound of Jerry Lee Wash, I'm hoping that Hoban is correct.

If memory serves, in the commentary on "The Message," Alan Tudyk makes a reference to his flying style and calls it Jerry Lee Lewis flying Serenity. That probably added to the confusion.

A sort-of-similar thing occurs in the Sailor Moon canon:

In Japan's Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury's real name is Ami Mizuno. When the show was translated, she officially (in production notes) became Amy Anderson, but the Anderson surname was never invoked onscreen (the "Mizuno" name was from the original manga, IIRC, where all the senshi had full names).

In both shows, Ami/Amy is half-American (on her [absent] father's side). Thus, the fandom just decided that Anderson is dad's name, now hyphenated. Thus, some references to the original show now identify her retroactively as Ami Mizuno-Anderson.

Aaaand no-one cares. . .

O___O That's news to me! You would think I'd know this since I'm a rabid SM fan (though I'm some yrs out of possible new info besides the live action show). Is there anything else that I should know about SM? Let me know

You know, I was just wondering about this a little earlier, because the "Serenity" entry on the IMDB has the character listed as "Jerry Lee "Wash" Warren.

They're not right %100 of the time of course, but they're usually fairly accurate. :-)

Anyone with an account can update IMDB listings (or so I learned from a previous thread). The TV listing has "Wash" Warren. The movie listing has Jerry Lee "Wash" Warren. If I remember correctly, the TV listing used to have the Jerry Lee. My best guess is that they just copied the cast names from the TV show to the movie and then someone came along later and editted the TV show entry. So that's a long winded way of saying that IMDB listings are not necessarily canon.

I am wondering....

Has anyone thought of actually asking either Joss or Alan, or anyone that works on the show.

If they have, what have they said in response.
Is it some kind of secret or is it simply a matter of Joss not coming up with a name just yet, either way 'Wash' is how I will always know him.
