YOu know. . .this drives me nuts. . .it really does. . .

When people attacked the new "Battlestar" about issues of purity, I told them to get over it. . .it was a RETELLING of the story, a REIMAGINING of the story, not a REMAKE. To be honest, I loved it. And I was a huge fan of the original.

I hate it when folks expect something new. . .a new version. . .to be EXACTLY like the original.

But at the same time. . .I have misgivings about the new Serenity.

You know. . .I've never pictured Wash as the type who WORE 'fitted' flight suits. . .and Serenity herself? Come on. I thought part of the beauty of the story was that the old tub looks like she's falling apart! Sure the engine runs sweet, but that's because Kaylee is an engine mechanic. . .not a painter, metalworker, etc.

At the same time. . .and this is why it drives me nuts. . .I recall starting a thread, "What if they had kept the cash from the Ariel job? Or somesuch. . .and the FIRST thing on my list was a paint job and filling in some of the empty holes in Wash's console.

Gorramit. . .I guess this is just anxiety from waiting for the movie. Why do we have to wait so gorram long????

I know what you mean... My biggest worry (well, second biggest worry. My biggest worry is that Universal Studios will change their minds and cancel the movie) is that there will be a movie and it will be like: "Huh? That's not Firefly. No way. All the good stuff is gone!".
Problem is, I think all the fans just don't really care what will be changed as long as there is a movie. And I think so too - whatever happens, it's a FF movie!!! Finally!
Only thing we can do about it is wait for the movie to come out...

Just don't throw those Firefly DVDs away. Then, when you're really despondent about the movie, you can wallow in nostaglia - chox, kleenex ...

C'mon, guys! This is Joss Whedon who's making the movie -- it's not just some other guy's remake! Do you honestly think he'll gut the characters' stories? (That's what Firefly was about, after all -- the stories!) I know it's hard to wait, but productions take time. So what if there's a little more glitter on the big screen? It's still gonna be the 'verse we know and love.

I hear ya Static.

But if I may quote the heart of the ship, Kaylee (Jewel), in her post nearby:

"You guys are awesome, awesome, and awesome. I love reading all of your (sometimes hilarious) posts and I can't WAIT for you guys to check out this movie!! It is going to rule the 'verse!"

I'm restin' easy here.

And I really liked the "new" Battlestar Galactica. BTW, the DVD looks delayed but my favourite producer (Universal) promises it for "later this year."

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I agree w/ Maker on this one, and Jewel's last few lines of her post eased any misgivings I might have about the movie or Serenity herself.

We need to keep in mind too that Joss is selling a product here, and hopefully it will mean at least three movies. Who knows where we go from there, though I would like to see Firefly return to the small screen someday. Joss may need to tinker with things a bit to make the old girl fly at the box office. If he does, and the movie is a hit, I will be happy. It beats the alternative.

Yeah, we have no worries. This will be a good movie, guaranteed. Joss has always put out quality scripts.

BTW, Battlestar Galactica will have another series coming out. They had a preview of it on SciFi channel last Friday night. Not sure if it is another mini-series, or an actual series, but that is good to look forward to.

I'm not sure if that's true. The lack of glitter is part of what made the 'verse what it was. Try as I might to suppress it every time I here about these changes I see the crew on the spotless starship Enterprise, wearing uniforms they never would, with blinky lights all around them.

Do I really want to see that?

Wash wearing that thing doesn’t seem like Wash, the ship looking better doesn’t sound like the ship. The ‘verse we know and love has a wacky pilot, a ship that looks like a piece of go-se, and a total lack of glitter in all of the places the crew is likely to go.

I hope that Wash is only wearing that thing as part of a job. I hope that the changes in the ship are barely noticeable (actually I hope that the changes don’t exist and it was all a joke, but I doubt it), and I hope that any glitter is solely related to the core worlds and the Alliance.

Remember that Joss is not in charge, Universal is in charge. Joss being at the helm may only mean he’s doing his best to salvage what little he can after it’s been screwed over royally by the people who are really in charge.

And this is why our parents tell us not to going looking for our presents before Christmas - you just spoil the day.

1. The film is in production. You seem to be basing your comments on a few photos. (that's aimed at all the above, rather than just "you", btw)

2. If Joss was screwed over, he would have walked away, burnt the land and boiled the sea. Without Joss, the cast would not have returned. I find it hard to believe that Joss would made sure he could get out of the deal if he was forced to make wholesale changes.

3. TV is about compromise of budget and time - some of the changes (if there are any, I don't know one way or the other) may be to the intended original idea, or might (shock, horror) be for the better.

Then again, Joss Whedon, award winning writer, may have written a bad script that Universal allowed him to make with $30-40 million of their money, the actors may have decided to sleep walk through their parts because nothings worth a damn anymore and Joss may have hired a has-been DoP to assist him in getting his vision onto the screen.

Alternatively, in the real world, I'll wait and see the movie and then judge where it should inhabit in the pantheon of SF films.

Speculate by all means folks, but lets think happy thoughts unless we are given reason to think otherwise.

Well, I suppose if you're that worried, you can just give the BDM a miss...

Personally, I'm just gonna sit back and enjoy.

Actually what I said (I realize you are talking to others as well) was based almost entirely on Honey's comments.

I’m going to wait till I see the movie to judge the changes, and I think others should as well. Honey clearly isn’t. Quite simply I’m sick of that. You aren’t supposed to pass judgment on a movie before you see it. I wish people would stop.

-

I’m also sick of hearing it said, “It’s still gonna be what we know an love.” Maybe the changes won’t make a difference, maybe it will be worse, maybe it will be better. None of us know. There’s only one thing we do know, it won’t be what we know and love. We may love it, we will certainly recognize it, but we won’t know it. That’s what changes do, they change things.

So no, if they’re making all of the changes we hear about left and right it won’t be the ‘verse we know and love, and no matter how many times you say it, it that wont change. It will be similar, of course, but the only thing we know for sure at this point is that it is going to be different from what we know.

Serenity will be a bad movie if Whedon hasn't moved on as an artist; we will know in April.

Are you sure?
I'll keep it short. Two years is a long time in the life of a still young artist, expecially if it includes parenthood. My hope is, that experience will be channeled into his work, making it new, vibrant and different from what went before.

Did I miss a memo?

Did they recast?
Did they rename the characters?
Did they replace Joss Whedon with Kevin Sorbo?

Damn them for using extra production values, damn them for trying to make the film accessible for new viewers.

As yet, I've seen nothing to indicate wholesale changes, nor indeed minor changes - save a bit of the production design.

Okay, this makes little or no sense to me - if Whedon hasn't moved on from where he was in Objects in Space as an artist, Serenity will be bad?

I agree, one would hope he has become even better, as one would expect with more experience as a director and writer under the belt, but I don't see the logic of the point you are making - as if somehow the intervening period could have sucked the talent out of him.

OUTSIDER

C'mon, people, cheer up here. I realise we're all excited about the BDM - and are therefore also nervous as hell that something will make it all go hideously wrong - but surely if Joss was being forced to make any changes/compromises he wasn't happy with, we would have heard about it. If not from the man himself, then probably from one of the cast or someone at ME.

Now... let's all take a deep breath, watch the DVDs again, and try and forget about the movie. Y'know, at least until next year. That way we won't do ourselves a mischief worrying about problems that might not exist.
