A nice new Alan Tudyk interview just posted on Scifi.com - warning contains at least one major plot spoiler!

The article is entitled "Firefly Gets Big In Serenity"

Here's the link - if you dare

Not too big of a spoiler. Looks like 'versal is pretty pleased with things thus far. Man, I can't wait to see our BDH's on the BDS (Big Damn Screen that is).

The spoiler, as I see it, is the mention of the specific objective of "The Operative" - which, I have not heard before (maybe others have).

For some reason, I am still bothered by the repeated mentioning of changes to Serenity (the ship). To quote Dr. McCoy in the first Star Trek Movie, "I know movie execs, they love to change things"

(okay, is was engineers, but who else is geek enough to notice? (two dozen hands suddenly raise up)

I thought I was the only one. I don't want a better ship, I don't want cooler costumes. I want the same damn thing.

Every time I get a new person to watch Firefly they rant about how it is movie quality. I agree, why can't a movie settle for movie quality? Why do they have to go and change everything?

Come on, y'all-- have a little faith. Who's in charge? Meester Joss himself. Do you like his work? Sure sounds like it.

If things are changing a bit, he's the one behind the changes; since he strikes me more as a master of his art than a capricous dimwit without any sense of his audience, I'm guessing all the changes are made as a part of the continuing process of manifesting a complex artistic vision. You love that vision. And he knows you do.

So stop fretting, let the folks do their job, and trust that it'll be wonderful.

'Cause it will be.

Well, to quote Jewel Staite at DreamCon:

Q: Is the new ship anything like the old one??

Jewel: Yes.

Q: They kept it the same??

Jewel: Yes. Somewhat. Umm, there's a couple things that are different. It was tweaked a little bit, even though Joss didn't want it to be. Umm, but, it looks good. It's just looks, it's just looks like we have a little more money and we, you know, we have a big studio behind us.

So, it was not Joss' idea to change Serenity. The changes are not part of his "artistic vision." I am not bothered that there are changes, I am bothered that the changes are not Joss' idea.

If I recall right, Mal being goofy and light(er) wasn't in the original plan either, and was insisted upon by evil Fox execs. That all turned out allright. Execs always send notes. They always tinker. Purity never happens. Have trust that Joss is in charge, and that if he ever feels he's not, something will be done about it. Or that if something's gone wrong, with the vast family feel on set and the network of spies among the extras, we're gonna hear about it.

According to what AT said, the changes are that the halls are a little wider and they don't cut themselves on sharp edges on the sets anymore. Those sound like changes that maybe the set designer came up with to improve working conditions (as Alan said - it's now SAFER) for the actors. (start sarcastic voice) Gee, that's just awful. I'm definitely not going to go see the movie now. (end sarcastic voice).

Spoilerish Response

I think we are getting a subtle information campaign from the set. It's becoming apparent that the studio is requiring at least some Star Wars/Trek affects if they are going to spend this kind of money on a Sci-Fi Movie. We were warned about the mule changing and then we got some photos that included it. Now we have gotten lots of warnings about the ship and that can't be an accident since most of these statements have been prefaced by the person saying "Well if I say too much Joss will kill me ...But the ship has changed." So I won't like it if they get more stereotypical with the sets but I can live with it as long as they stay out of the script.

Certain improvements are to be expected -- story-line wise, even. 6 months later, Mal better be listening to Kaylee a bit more about what Serenity needs to keep flying and even letting her make a few improvements. Captain can't be dumb (hard-headed, yes, dumb, no) and should have learned something from his experience with the catalyzer in Out of Gas. I'm hoping for allusions to Kaylee-driven upgrades in the script to explain the changes to Serenity. And the sale of the Lassiter has to have been lucrative. Hoping to hear all about that, too...

Where did I read the post about the vines in the kitchen still being there? It's here on Haken's site, somewhere.

"Is there any way I'm gonna get out of this with honor and dignity?"
