NYPOST.COM - There’s still hope, Browncoats!

The cast of “Firefly” revealed this weekend that there has been talk of an animated version of the short-lived sci-fi cult classic that went off the air 10 years ago.

The cast reunited this weekend at New York’s Comic Con to preview their Science Channel 10th anniversary special “Browncoats Unite,” which airs Nov. 11.

On the panel, “Firefly” star Nathan Fillion told a room packed with fans, “If we’re dreaming, tell me what you think about this: ‘Firefly’ the animated series.”

Still think it's the best possible resolution to some of the issues the fandom has been discussing with starting the series up again. And like I also said I think most everything would translate into cartoon, although some characterizations or themes they might have to gloss over to fit the medium better.

Do you think they'd do the pilot episode in the cartoon style as a pilot? I'd love that.

Or some sort of amalgated movie pilot episode maybe? With a flashback of the Shadow/Serenity Valley bombardment and the surrender, then opening River's box with Simon's explanation about rescuing her, then maybe Mal fighting the Operative while the Miranda broadwave plays. Then cut to them doing repairs after the primary buffer panel fell off (again) and a new adventure. That'd be a good way to introduce everything.

If they animate it I hope they go with "Titan A.E." type of animation, I'm tired of CGI.

TECHNICALLY Titan A.E. had CGI. But it worked in context. I agree about the animation style, though, that would be gorgeous and fit the adult sci-fi cartoon niche pretty well. And since that film was made on a pretty tight budget, it would still be cheaper than building sets.

I sort of agree although I like the style of THE CLONE WARS.

My vote would be a sort of blend between Iron Giant and AKIRA.

Titan A.E had the perfect blend of traditional animation and CGI. I think that style would be great for an animated Firefly series. Plus it came from Fox/20th Century. AND Joss!

Clone Wars or Ghibli style I just can't see for Firefly, though both are superb in their own right.

Legend of Korra has great animation IMO. Their world has some similarities to Firefly too. A little more steampunkish I guess but still has a similar feel to me.

If Forefly come back, wait not if, WHEN Firefly comes back I want the real cast!

I want that too, River_Tam, but would still be thrilled with a seriously cool animation/cartoon series. I'm thinking the kind of animation/CGI of Final Fantasy 8. Really, with the original cast doing the voices such a series would allow Joss to play with ideas he never got to realise in the series. By the way I got my "Firefly, A Celebration" book the other day and could have cried it is so beautifully put together. Basically it is volumes 1 and 2 of the Firefly Official Companion along with Serenity but in one gorgeous hardback binding with mock leather and a set of cast photos in the back along with a sample copy of the currency. Very cool and terrific quality.

Just wanted to correct you on that it doesn't have the Serenity Visual Companion in it, but it does have volume 3 of Firefly: Still Flying.

And I agree it is a absolutely gorgeous.

Everyone's ten years older.
Anime might be the best medium for continuing the story, but that art form has not done well in the US for movies, even for Mononoke and Beebop.

Animated is certainly the way to go, but let's face it. If it weren't for Sean Maher's comment, it would boil down to people freaking out over something Nathan Fillion says in passing or as humorous aside to himself (much like his "I'd buy 'Firefly' and release it on the internet" statement). And even WITH Maher's statement, it really is just a "I know this guy" statement. And unless that 'guy' has got any further with Joss about it (and Joss would have to fall for the idea HARD) or has some pull in the industry (which I doubt), then this will come to naught. As much as I'd like to say otherwise, mind you :)

I'd be happy to see the group together. It's a shame they killed Book and Wash in the movie but maybe we could see some flashbacks.

You know with Joss now under contract with Disney and Disney's partnership with Pixar; a Firefly cartoon is a really sound idea. Pixar need to move in a new direction anyway; an animation with a little more grit to it, as Firefly would require, would be an interesting route for Pixar.

A more adult themed narrative would be a natural progression for them. It would also provide a sound platform for their directors to launch their feature careers from...

Well... That would explain why Zack's doing the Firefly comics now.

I don't think ANY brown coat would mind bringing them back even though it wouldn't follow the time line

I think you're wrong. I think it would cheapen Serenity if they were brought back. Their deaths mean something if they're permanent. I think they should remain dead. I'm confident Joss can come up with new characters that will be just as interesting.

Yea, their deaths meant that they couldn't commit to another movie at the time, universal wanted them all available should a second movie be made. Joss could always go with the original script and refilm Serenity, then continue.

Sorry to contradict you River_Tam but I really wouldn't want them brought back. The severity of what has happened in SERENITY still sends ripples out to fans. Some like, some do not like; but all are moved or affected by it and that sort of feels like the point.
I agree with Zeek on this.

Wash's death, while tragic, fell upon the single greatest moment of his life. He brought Serenity down under conditions that would have overpowered any other pilot and saved the lives of everyone on board. To re-write him, would take away something of that.

That said, the animated series could predate the film.
