Where is Osama Bin Laden?

TAKE THE POLL:

The media is reporting that after 2 1/2 years in Afghanistan, we're closing in on Osama bin Laden. Some people, however, believe that the U.S. has known the location of Bin Laden for a while now. Some world news reports claim Bin Laden has already been arrested.

It's hard to believe what is true these days.

What's your prediction?

Will Bin Laden be captured BEFORE or AFTER the 2004 Presidential Election?

I just started a poll on the home page of my Strangefinger website:

http://www.strangefinger.com/index.html#bl

Does anyone think the Bush Admin. is waiting for the right time to "Find Bin Laden" in order to help his presidential campaign?

I think that he will be found after the election. Not due to any predetermined action by Bush... but it's not inconceivable.

It's difficult to trust the US government.

Searching the web, I've found lots of contrasting information.

I found this website interesting: http://www.mindspace.org/liberation-news-service/archives/000589.html

But Shahed, who is The Nation's Peshawar bureau chief and not its editor, denied telling Iranian radio that bin Laden had been captured.

"I never said this," Shahed said in a telephone interview with AP's Islamabad bureau. "But I have for the last year been saying that he is not far away. He is within their (the Americans') reach, and they can declare him arrested any time."

It sure is impossible to know the truth, everyone has an agenda.

Come on, take the poll!

I think you need another option in your poll. It is possible bin Laden is already dead.

Good point. I slightly changed the question and reset the poll.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

As far as Bin Laden is concerned, anything is possible.

I do not trust the federal gov't, and I trust politicians less than the gov't. Too many agendas and too much smoke & mirrors to ever get the truth.

Do I think it possible that the Bush Admin, or some elements of the admin might wait until the right moment to reveal the capture of Bin Laden in order to assist in Bush's re-election, sure do. Other presidents have shown that they are not above manipulation of fact to stay in office.

I can tell you that noone in Afghanistan below the rank of Colonel has any idea.

The only thing they tell us when we go on our missions is that we are in pursuit of "HVTs" or "High Value Targets"

Exactly WHO those high value targets are or how high their value is. . .we don't know.

I wish I could offer more insight, but I'm a mushroom.

They keep me in the dark and feed me bullshit.

You know if Bin Laden didn't turn up just in time for election to give Bush that extra election push I'd be suprised.

But you do know this belongs in "Talk Story" wich says discuss anything you want here. All political threads belong in "Talk Story"

THIS IS NOT MINE!!! I just don't want anyone to think I'm stealing their idea, 'cause I'm not. I read this somewhere once-upon-a-time, can't remember where/when, that Osama's probably serving drinks as a cross-dresser in a gay bar in Las Vegas.

No, no, NO!

I've been telling people for YEARS. And will any one listen to me? Hell no!

All along I’ve been saying this. He is a Cab Driver in New Jersey.

Why else would he make New York the main target? Resentful Jersey native that’s why.

Actually, a guy in France ran over a pedestrian with his car because he thought it was Osama. Isn't that just freaking hilarious? The guys lawyer stated that "If my client had run over Osama Bin Laden, he would be 5 million dollars richer!"

Wow tmurrie! A guy in France tried to hurt someone the U.S. doesn't like? If the French courts don't get this guy I'm sure regular French folk will tear him limb from limb for treason.

And just think we liberated France and polls show were more popular in Iran than France. Just think how popular were going to be with Iraq. I'm telling you we gotta stop liberating people America has enough enemies as is.

As the UK is considered to be part of Europe by many people (not me) I hope you didn't mean to include it.

(Edit - I have reinserted what I originally said because Dyairvatree has responded. However I stand by the edited version (which read: just reread what I wrote and decided it was really stupid - so have deleted it. Sorry.)because I don't want this turned into a political slanging match.)

You know Wren you post an interesting point saying you don't consider yourself a part of Europe. I used to hang out with any number of Europeans and I've been told they don't consider the U.K. Europe. And since then I've come to understand many in the U.K. don't consider themselves a part of Europe I found all this shocking since I allways thought it was.

Anyway as a American I find this interesting and can only say in response that I hope the U.K. makes more Doctor Who in 2005.

But if you wanted to say if most in the U.K. consider themselves a part of Europe or not I'd be interested to know. And are the Austrians and Swiss I know freaks or is it commonly held on the mainland that you aren't Europe? I only ask because I've never left North America and have no clue.

Jeez, I wish more people would do that-- make the world (at least online) a little more peaceable.

As for Osama-- beats me. I gave up trying to figure out what's going to happen next in this whole screwy situation quite sometime ago. I cannot imagine the Bush administration having Mr. Osama effectively squirreled away somewhere for use at the most opportune moment. If they had had him within reach anytime in the last two years I cannot imagine them not pulling him in. To do otherwise would not just be Machiavellian,, it would be stupid.

And as we're discussing this, let's remember there are some very tired troops out there, humping over some very rough ground, doing their damndest to rope this guy in. They're not playing games, you can bet on it. I just hope nobody higher up the chain of command is sending them out on fool's-errands....

Oh, bugger! Now I have to wait for someone to wake up!

I think this has to be split into two parts - geography and politics

In my atlas the UK is geographically placed as part of Europe. However, in my experience the people of the UK don't geographically see themselves as part of Europe. I think this is due to the English Channel. As a result 'we' see ourselves as a separate entity from the European continent. I have only discussed this with five Europeans (one French and four Spanish) who also geographically saw us as separate from Europe, because of the channel.

Equally our geographical isolation and history of animosity with Europe has produced a cultural divide. I do not think that divide will ever be overcome, the UK mentality is now too different from the Europeans. I think we have more kinship with countries like Australia and the USA.

Then there is the political aspect, which constitutes the European Community. This is a more sensitive issue. Like it or not (I don't) the UK joined the EC. I couldn't possibly speak for the whole of the UK, but the people I have discussed this with do not want to be part of the EC. The most common response I get is that -'I' didn't agree to join so 'I'm' not part of the EC. (Yes I am one of these). I have only met two people who were glad to be members of the EC.

As I have already stated I am only speaking my view, not that of the UK population. I appreciate other people will disagree and they have a right to their view. I will always consider what they say.
