According to an announcement on the Official Firefly Website, the first episode of Firefly will be titled "The Train Job". The episode has the production designation of 1AGE01.

As reported previously by Ain't It Cool News, the crew of the Serenity is contracted by a fearsome and powerful mobster named Adelei Niska to pull a train robbery.

So they're gonna land in their spaceship, mount up on their horses, and bushwack a train? Presumably a steam train? Cool.

This is consistent with my earlier rants about retro technology on frontier worlds. It should be interesting to see how people respond to this mixture of future and past technology. It's the sort of thing you see all the time in a certain kind of SF (anybody else read Poul Anderson?). But TV and movie audiences tend to get confused by such apparent inconsistency.

Then again, I'm not sure it's as much the audience as the entertainment industry's perception of the audience. One would hope that most people are smarter than Hollywood seems to assume they are!

Yeah Joss said something about floating trains, i think it's gonna be killer awesome.

Quick q, if 1AGE01 is the pr. code, then what was the code for the 2hour pilot?

If you know anyone that can help my screenwriting career, please help! And yes, I am self-advertising here. Hehehe, me such a little devil.

Zic - have you ever read The Ragged Astronauts by Bob Shaw? I loved it. It's not so much a mixture of old and new tech as it is old tech but on a different world. It mixes a historical/fantasy feel with a SciFi sensibility.

Sounds interesting. Out of print, alas. I'll give it a look if Alibris has it for a reasonable price.

I was wondering that myself. It has always bothered me whne studios/producers use different numbers for the episodes. Is 1AGE01 the production number or the airing order? Then there is the question of which episode is this really? Is it the 2 hour JW-intro episode or the FOX-adventure intro?

In other posts I had read that the first episode would be "a great train robbery." At the time, I thought the reference was to the Michael Crichton film "The Great Train Robbery" or "The First Great Train Robbery" if you lived in the UK. That was an excellent high adventure movie IMHO, that involved robbing a moving train---for the very first time! Normally you get on board the train, stop it, rob everybody and steal the gold, then run away. It brought a whole new level of complexity to rob the train without stopping it.

Now, if the reference was meant to refer to Burt Kennedy's "Train Robbers", it takes on a whole new meaning. John Wayne stars in this movie where some people are hired to retrieve some gold that had been stolen from a train. This movie is more about the characters than it is about action, and the ending has a wonderfully neat twist.

Then again, this episode may borrow from both movies with a few oddities thrown in.

Hire Serenity's crew to rob train (lots of cargo ships pulled by single powered ship). Crew runs into trouble, probaly at least one double-cross, gets stuff for mean employer, then "accidently" drops it where somebody can put it to better use, and big-bad meany gets mad, and Mal and crew wander off into the sunset (whoosh off into the starfield)

Irregardles of how it comes out, I can't wait until it actually AIRS!!!!

to all who are waiting

I mean, wouldn't the two hour pilot be 1AGE01 & 1AGE02, and The Train Job be 1AGE03 but still shown as the premiere.

If you know anyone that can help my screenwriting career, please help! And yes, I am self-advertising here. Hehehe, me such a little devil.

Why am I gently reminded of some articles in "The Journal of the Traveler's Aid Society?"

Did Joss ever sell short fiction to the games market?
