Found this article on Yahoo news a little while ago: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080606/ap_on_fe_st/odd_scholarly_buffy. How awesome is that? There's certain discussions that will be held involving feminism, stereotypes, and domestic roles.

One of our local Browncoats is going. Dale Koontz wrote "Faith and Choice in the Works of Joss Whedon". I have no idea if she is one of the submitting authors but she goes to Buffy conferences all over the country -- all over the world really. They had one here in NC last year at UNC-G sponsored by the Womens Studies department.
Anyone who's interested in the underlying themes in Buffy should check out one of these conferences. Very interesting from what I understand.

On another note, did you notice that the article is listed in Odd News?
We may be a bit fanatical, but we are not Odd. Are we?

*arches eyebrow* When is the next conference in NC?

And personally, I've embraced my oddness, but I digress. I think the name of Yahoo's miscellaneous news category is "Odd News".

I'm not sure. It was a symposium to finish up a year-long lecture series called "Why Buffy Matters: The Smartest Show on Television". UNC-G has one of the most acclaimed Womens Studies departments in the country. They are big Buffy fans there. But it may have been a one-time deal. I know of at least one Browncoat from here in Charlotte who went. She said it was worth the trip.
Dale Koontz (the above referenced author) is a professor in Cleveland County, NC. She regularly uses Buffy (and other Whedon works) as part of her curriculum. Turns out the genius of Whedon's writing is an excellent teaching tool.
Keep your eyes open for upcoming events. It seems like Dale goes to one every few months or so. In fact, let me see if I can track down her blog address. That might be a good way to keep your finger on the proverbial pulse.

Okay, I found it. Sorry that took me so long.
Dale's blog is at:

The first entry is from the Slayage Conference in Little Rock.

I would really recommend flipping through some of the entries in Dale's blog. She's very easy to read and has some real insight into the Whedon world. She's a fan through-and-through.
