What's the interview about?

It was a brief interview about Joss bringing back Buffy in comic books. While he didn't specifically mention Firefly, he did say something about not caring if he received any awards but rather that writing about monsters, spaceships and the future was what interested him. Not his exact words. They played Sarah Michelle Geller singing from "the musical."

This is not a good sign. Should I say it? He's being treated like a has-been!

Hmnn? I wasn't sure what he meant. I didn't exactly see him being treated like a has-been but they did say it was unusual to make a comic book following a show rather than the other way around. Joss said he tried to keep the show going but couldn't get the actors or other back-up he needed so he decided to do the comic books. You can probably go to NPR This American Life and listen to the show.

"Awww... the poor guy couldn't do the show he wanted so he's doing it in comic book form." OMG! total has-been! Joss's better get in the good graces of some big named producer as fast as he can, and make a movie or produce a TV series before it's too late!

"Now let's go back down memory lane when Joss was great and producing worthwhile shows that got canceled..."

It'll probably take a few days or a week for them to post the show online. Don't worry, I'm sure it'll show up soon, Red.

P.S. I LOVE This American Life!

Me, too. Its the best radio program on the air. I don't get to listen as often as I would like. Around here it broadcasts on Friday evenings, that is a hard time...as we fans of Firefly have found out.

I didn't get a chance to listen to the NPR interview but it sounds almost identical to the one he did for Studio 360 last weeek.

Can anyone confirm if they are the same?

To reframe the "has-been" comment: Joss doing what he loves instead of what will make him big bucks is only good for us...if that makes him a big fish in a small pond, all the better. I'd rather see some classic Whedon comics, low-budget movies, or tv shows than to see him as one of 10 writers on the next Harry Potter or somesuch.

Well, if Joss didn't want to do Wonder Woman I can understand that seeing that the history of Wonder Woman is rather sketchy at best since it was created in the 1940s, but I think he can do a SuperGirL movie to make up for the train wreck Supergirl movie that was made in 1984.

Or Joss can sit back at home on his couch and eat out of that big container of fritoes while reading back issues of Spiderman comics, while living off of the money he made from BtVS, ANGEL, and Firefly/Serenity and get fatter and fatter and fatter while life passes him by or he can get off his butt and write something. In the business that he's in is fast paced and if you don't keep your foot in the door, you get left behind.

Sorry to say but he's at the border of has-been.

Trolling? I'm not trolling.

You mean my comment? I meant that comment. I'm sorry if you didn't like it, but I meant every word. I'm not trying to be mean, in a strange way I'm trying to be supportive. I don't want the guy to get slack that's all. He needs to stay in the game to be successful. He's too young to be slowing down right now.

I was refering to how you had to say it 3 posts in a row.

But how is he a has-been for doing a comic to continue a story that he couldn't have any other way? Lots of Hollywood people are writing comics these days, of higher and lower status than Joss. And he's got Goners coming up.

Yes, I know, but you and I and everyone who is familiar with Joss's work knows that he can do better than this. I'm not even thinking of Firefly right now, I'm thinking of doing other things; other shows, or maybe even write a story in novel form. I've read the 3 comics out there right now and yes it's decent, but I wouldn't be handing any awards out right now for them. They are somewhat predictable. I would have preferred an anima Firefly or BtVS season 8 over the comic book version to tell you the truth. I'm a fan, and fans say things like this.

A writer/producer hooks you in with several television series and a movie. You think its great, and of course you are going to want more. All of his shows get canceled except for BtVS, and now the only thing he's got going on is a comic book series of season 8. It is a bit of frustration for a few who have been conditioned by Joss to like and want more of his stuff, and a little anger is normal when we see that he isn't really moving a lot these days. I simply don't want him to get left behind and maybe eventually in time lose his fan base and also the confidence of the other producers and directors out there.

If you call that "Trolling" then I guess you are right.

It's a rough business, and even guys with bigger names and more clout than Joss get turned down, or have their shows cancelled. And it is often years between projects for writers. He's flat out said he doesn't want to go back to TV as it stands, he does have a feature film lined up, the business model really has proven itself for the D2DVD market, and just becuase he writes scripts well, doesn't mean he'd be good at, or even want to write, a novel.

I just think it's a bit soon to be counting him out, just because he doesn't have stuff on the air this minute.

I'm loathe to break into the middle of you two, hope I'm not infringing, but something you said I have to agree with StoryMark.

The direct to DVD market is being tested right now with the B5, SG-1 and Dead Like Me movies. From some of the things that Joss has said in interviews lately my personal opinion ( and please remember it's my humble personal opinion ) is that he is waiting to see what that market does. My thoughts are that after those movies break and we see how they do, keep your eye on Joss and lots of other genre folks too.

I understand your frustration River, I really do, because I fear we'll have no more Jossigoodness too. But I have faith. Don't lose your faith yet.

Well said! BTW I'm not losing faith, I'm just a little frustrated that's all. The direct to DVD sounds great and promising. I just didn't want to watch Joss stand still and lose his place in the most imaginative writer slot. I'm sure it will all work out in the end.

River, I see your point. And to be truthful - he is being treated has a has-been, and sort of is one for the moment, as far as the Hollywood monster is concerned. I mean, he's not working on new big projects that I'm aware of. That's very very sad. I really miss him, nothing else is as entertaining as his stuff!

It seems like, to be a right-now person instead of a has-been, you have to give up your individuality. The "one of 13 writers on Harry Potter" thing. On one hand - Go Joss for sticking to the stories he loves, in whatever form! But (other hand) I hope that sometime soon he'll find a new story he's passionate to tell, and get a it onto some screen or another. Just to give us more fodder for our worship!!

BTW, Storymark - shame on you for pulling out the T word so easily! River was on subject and had a good point - though unpleasant to hear. She's responded to you with much cool reasonableness, too. Why don't you and make up or something!

Good I'm glad, cuz I can't wait to have a discussion on this board that we can both take part in celebrating his newest project and it's success whatever it may be!

Joss invented 2 of the most successful shows with a cult following ever. He created Buffy and Firefly. Firefly had some trouble with marketing and timing but that was marketing problem that could have happened to any show. I think Joss can be a legend for ever for inventing 2 highly successful shows. Not many people can do that and people expect more?

I am very proud of what Joss has accompished so far and can't wait to see what he does next. There will always be peaks and troughs in any career, more so for the people creating the original stories that everything else hinges on. Also, having been so successful with Buffy and then producing such a high quality and acclaimed series as Firefly with the Serenity movie coming off the kudos of that, Joss has created a demand for more quality work which is a pressure of expectation.

I am watching the D2DVD market with great interest as the new "Babylon 5: The Lost Tales" has taken that route and it will be interesting to see how that does. My preorder is already in and I can't wait.

A question now if I may. Does anybody know what is happening with the "Firefly" tie-in novels that were supposed to be coming out last year? This is not the comic series. Joss mentioned there were be books coming out then nothing more was heard, unless I misunderstood and he was referring to the Firefly Companions.

Joss answered this in his FanBoyRadio interview.

He's "not really interested in having people write Serenity novels".

As I understood it, it was not Serenity novels but Firefly ones, so they presumably would be pre-BDM, and my assumption was that Joss would be writing them. Thank you for the link to the fan boy radio podcast with Joss. It doesn't answer my question per se but seems to indicate no novels coming up.
