'Angel' May Resurrect 'Buffy' Characters

Last spring's demise of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" left fans longing to see their favorite characters appear on the spin-off thriller "Angel" — but the reunion may have to wait a while.

The punk vampire Spike (played by James Marsters (news)) made the jump from being a regular on "Buffy" to being a regular on "Angel," and producers are hoping for a few other crossovers down the road.

But overall, there's already a crowded ensemble on "Angel" and producers say their main priority is to focus on the regular cast of actors.

Meanwhile, there was an unresolved plotline involving the character of Cordelia Chase, a brunette wannabe-actress who fought evil with cold, cutting sarcasm. She was left in an offscreen coma, and actress Charisma Carpenter was dropped from the show — the plotline unresolved.

Nothing is certain at this stage, but the following is a rundown of who may and may not make guest appearances on "Angel":

Buffy Summers: Likely — but maybe next season. Sarah Michelle Gellar (news) has said she'd enjoy resurrecting her character as Angel's old flame, but wanted some distance on her signature role. "Buffy" and "Angel" creator Joss Whedon also said he'd like her to return — eventually. "I'm not banking on it," he said.

Willow Rosenberg: Possibly. This good witch played by Alyson Hannigan (news) has shown up on "Angel" before, and the actress has another connection to the show: she's engaged to marry "Angel" co-star Alexis Denisof (news). "I hope they can talk her into it. I'll certainly be trying to talk her into it," he said. "It's a question of scheduling and the storyline. You've got to come up with a story that really justifies it."

Rupert Giles: Maybe, but unlikely. The grown-up occult expert who oversaw the evil-battling kids in Sunnydale is earmarked to return — someday — in a TV movie titled "Ripper." The character never cared to cooperate much with Angel, who killed Giles' girlfriend years ago during a relapse of evil. But actor Anthony Stewart Head (news) has said he wouldn't mind crashing "Angel" for a clash with his old nemesis.

Xander Harris: Doubtful. Nicholas Brendon (news) played this ordinary guy, who always harbored jealousy over Angel's relationship with Buffy. Brendon has said the characters probably wouldn't fit well together.

Dawn Summers: Doubtful. Buffy's little sister (played by Michelle Trachtenberg (news)) wasn't around when Angel was hanging out in her hometown of Sunnydale, so she has no connection to him or reason to join forces.

Cordelia Chase: Bet on it. This glamor gal may be lying in a coma, but the writers expect to bring her back for a midseason flourish. "We definitely want to see Charisma again," Whedon said. "She has an important part to play this season to bring some closure."

The one character I would like to see crossing over is Xander - he's about the only one who could actually bring something new to Angel and go somewhere with his character...

There's room in Angel for the ordinary guy - I think it's a perspective that the show is beginning to lack with Gunn seeming to be moving off into weirdness. Any show where the point of view of the ordinary guy is given by a horned demon who runs a karaoke bar is probably in need of some new folks hanging around!

There's a lot to be explored with the effects of all the demon stuff on the civilians in LA - like with the stories that featured Anne running the shelter.

(but he's listed as doubtful... oh well... )

Xander has no super powers but that doesn't automatically make him "ordinary".

Xander's home town has been destroyed and presumedly his source of employment as well. He is now free to roam around and establish the next wave of Watchers or something similar... maybe a group of Watcher-like people who act independently of the Council.

The post-Sunnydale Xander has the potential of becoming a very fascinating character with all of the crap he's seen and experienced.

I don't know guys, Xander is one of my favorite characters, but I feel like all the good fanfic in my head [about the pseudo Xavier school for newbie slayers] is all I need from my old Buffy friends. having Spike resurrected on Angel kills the beauty of his selfless death in the final episode. I wish Xander and the rest many happy adventures, but i have to say I want them in my head & heart and not on my television where the Days-of-Our-Lives style plots of Angel will infect them.

Hey free soup!

Maybe there could be a spinoff with this week's female guest since he's single.

DRAKON

I don't know if there is room on the show for any more people. I would love to see all of them cross over briefly, not sure if the budget can support more regular characters. But after looking at all the reasons why it can't be done, I had to laugh.

Giles and Angel don't like each other. That's not a reason for keeping them apart, that called conflict, plot.

Without conflict, you ain't got much of a story.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Any of the characters from Buffy have the potential to be regulars and bring something to the show. I mean come on, they made Wesley a regular. I never really cared much for his character on Buffy, and he doesn't do much for me on Angel.

I suppose that scheduling conflicts, real life, and other possible projects would keep most of them from doing more than a single episode, but as Drakon said, conflict makes for great plots, and both Giles & Xander have had conflicts w/ Angel.

I think Tom Lenk (Andrew) should join Angel. It's a shame he came along so late into Buffy's run, as there's a lot more they could do with his character.

Actually, it's such a shame that the Faith spin-off didn't go ahead, as Andrew would have made a great sidekick for her!

Book: “A duel?”
Wash: “With swords?”
Simon: “The Captain's a good fighter, he must know how to handle a sword?”
Zoe: “I think he knows which end to hold.”
