'Firefly' lands in film afterlife

By Zorianna Kit and Chris Gardner
The short-lived TV series "Firefly" is moving to the big screen. After taking his "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" feature film and turning it into a successful TV series, Joss Whedon is about to do the reverse with another one of his creations. Whedon has teamed with Universal Pictures to turn "Firefly," a TV cult favorite, into a feature film.

In addition to having adapted it for the big screen, Whedon will also make his feature directorial debut with the project. Plans are to see "Firefly" go into production in first-quarter 2004.

Universal recently acquired the rights to "Firefly" from 20th Century Fox Television, where Whedon's Mutant Enemy Inc. production company has a television deal.

The action-adventure series was set 500 years in the future and centered on a crew aboard a spaceship. The feature version will incorporate the mythology from the show but will take on a more epic feel. Whedon hopes to enlist the entire cast to come back for the feature, depending on their previous commitments, with new characters added as well.

Whedon is producing the film through his Mutant Enemy Inc. along with studio-based producer Barry Mendell. Mendell, a former agent at UTA, used to represent Whedon. Mutant Enemy president Christopher Buchanan is executive producing. Universal production president Mary Parent is shepherding the project.

"Ever since the show went off the air, our fan base has grown even more," Buchanan said. "We've had tremendous outpouring from the U.S. and Canada as well as the U.K., which just finished a run of 'Firefly' over there. Every comic book and sci-fi convention has had a 'Firefly' presence since the show first aired."

For the series, which ran this past season, Whedon produced 15 hours of television, including a two-hour episode. Three shows never aired on Fox but will likely be featured on the series' DVD release, due out in December. Buchanan said fans created such a demand that DVD presales on Amazon.com sold out within 24 hours.

Whedon, repped by CAA, continues to be executive producer of "Angel," which he created. His feature film screenplay credits include "Titan A.E.," "Alien: Resurrection" and "Toy Story."

A long way to go yet before I'll be handing over my admission fee (multiple times, I imagine) but it's a solid start to the journey.
It's a happy day!
And take a bow 'cuz yer all Big Dam Heroes for forcing Fawks to hand over this gem. Still I wonder whether Fawks still holds TV rights? Better to resurrect the franchise when the movie shoots to number 1!

This could very possibly be the news that keeps me from committing suicide.
There must be some way to let Joss know how pleased we are. Maybe somebody out there with more experience than me at doing good deeds could think of something exceptional.
... Anyway, I would like to thank God and Jesus and Allah and Buddha and Joss. The biggies, ya know. One or more of them had to have helped out to achieve this outcome.

This thread should have has a few !!! after it because it is big news!!!

I hope they set up a nice new web site when the production begins in the spring, and give us lots of sneak peaks of the filming. That will give us all something new and shiny to see and talk about while we wait impatiently for the release date. It will also help bring others into the fold, as they say.

Again, shiny news!

This is fabulous news indeed!!

I love the fact that Chris Buchanan (Sp?) mentioned that we browncoats managed to sell out Pre-sales in 24 hours!

I've be saving my pennies to see this movie many many times in the theater!!

Yahooo!

I just heard yesterday on Access Hollywood (I watched soley due to a story on Def Leppard) that NBC and Universal are planning a merger ( http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-vivendi3sep03002430,0,7608972.st
ory?coll=la-headlines-business
), so maybe NBC could pick up Firefly for TV if the movie does well?

If so, that would be very shiny!

Whoa man! This is so insanely GREAT!!!!!
Okay -- probabilities here:
Look at the numbers (that's what studio execs do)... The pre-order Firefly DVDs sell out in < 24 hours on Amazon... Tons of people on this sites and other sites just like it announce they're gonna spend beaucoup bucks seeing the Firefly film multiple times (yeah, I know I will, at least 10 times minimum)...
This bodes well for an ongoing Firefly movie franchise, does it not?
Isn't this exaclty how the Trek film franchise and the Bond and the Star Wars movie franchise took off? People kept buying the merch. They kept going to the movies multiple times.
If the Firefly movie does indeed make megabucks, and I personally intend to phone & e-mail everyone I know and urge, nay, harry & chivvy and browbeat , them to go see the Firefly film when it opens...then it seems likely we could have a whole string of Firefly films.
And then what?
Maybe...just maybe...some O*T*H*E*R network (I will not use the F-word, F*X) might decide there's gold in them thar 'verse 'n pick up a Firefly series spinoff from the Firefly movies...?
Weirder things have happened. I mean, the original Trek TV series became a series of movies that did so well they eventually spun off a whole spate of new Trek TV series. Which are still going. So it ain't impossible.
All it needs is massive fan enthusiasm and huge amounts of fan networking. And, oh, wait a minute--I think we've got that covered, don't we?
Hallelujah, Joss! Ya done good, boy!

I share your joy.

One voice of bitterness: I hope FOX is pissed as hell about having a valuable franchise sold out from under them. Worthless corporate stiffs. They've been dreaming for years of having another "X-Files," and when they got it, they were too ignorant to notice. I hope the film is a massive success and numerous people at Fox get fired. This is fabulous news. The next best thing to not having the show on the air any longer. I can't wait. It's really unprecedented for a short lived, canceled TV series to be turned into a movie. I can't think of another series in which this happened. If Fox had marketed the series properly, and just given it a chance, I have no doubt it would of succeeded. I think a lot of people jumped on the bandwagon after they learned about the show after it was canceled. Nevertheless, this is great. If it does well, we can look forward to sequels. Who knows, maybe it will be another shot to be TV series. I know this is very unlikely, but I can dream.

Actually, I think I read somewhere that Joss wants to continue the TV series. As long as another station (sci-fi maybe??) picks it up. And if the movie DOES do well, people are gonna be like "that used to be a tv series? darn it I missed it" and then they'll HAVE to pick it up. I think a movie is just the jumpstart the TV show needed to keep flying.

Now THAT is a great idea. Oh, and I think this is a good time to toss out my own idea for a couple of reality shows that have bouncing around in my head:

Face the Conquences: Along the lines of the Real World, Network Executives are locked in a house with a group of fans from the tv shows they cancelled.

Russian Roulette: Along the lines of the Bachlor, a man must pick from a dating pool of twenty beautiful women. He's been told that one of the ladies is a millionare, which is true. What he doesn't know is that five of the "women" used to be men, and another five still are. Any "bachlorette" that is chosen gets a cool million. Original title before the lawyers got to it: Serves You Right For Being a Gold-digging Whore
