What do you all think? Canada says it's the Niagra falls, then they blame Pennsylvania. U.S. denies it, Bush vows a review.

People working on this problem know something. Lines cut? Burned? Where is the source of the problem? How could no one know what's wrong?

Okay, on the above post, that's a real photo on Yahoo News. WTF? It looks like someone is giving the president a blow job.

According to anonymous sources, it was this guy.

Yep, it looks like him from behind.

No, we can reset our pretty coloured International Threat Level or whatever the stupid thing is.

The Niagra power station on the US side was struck by lightening.

It's been confirmed...we can all let our paranoia relax a little.

Unless of course Bush puts a spin on it. I can see it now:

"My fellow Americans. It was a shocking day for us all. CIA and FBI sources have now confirmed that, in association with Al Quieda terrorists, Iraqui military, and any one else I feel will make a good "enemy of the month," our Lord in heaven struck at our great country today with a bolt of lightening. I know this scares many people but believe that your leaders are working around the clock to deal with this holy threat to our freedom. God, having joined the Axis of Evil, will soon learn that he may take our electricty, but he'll never take our power."

Who confirmed it? I'm looking at current online news that says "4 minutes ago" and "2 minutes ago," and it still seems to be a mystery.

"We all are wondering what caused this," said New York Gov. George Pataki. President Bush ruled out terrorism.

"But Brian Warner of the New York Power Authority said its Niagara facilities were not hit by lightning and "at no time during this incident ceased to operate."

Since when is "Blow Job" a bad thing to say? Please forgive me for offending you. I live in Utah, and I can tell you that "blow job" isn't that bad a word compared to other words, like "Fuck" or "God Damn," according to Mormons. That's because it does't count as having "sex" nor is it using the Lord's name in vain. Sorry that "Blow Job" is painful to you, I won't say it again, I'm really sorry.

actually my first thought given just how widespread this thing was, was some top secret EMP weapons test.

...and if it was an emp test, is it so inconceivable it just might look like a lightning strike to a person on the ground?

...is it wrong that part of me was pissed that my power didn't go out, and that it was closer to the 27th, just so i could get a really good look at mars w/o any urban light pollution?

also , even if it's not a terror attack, i wouldn;t put it past good 'ol W. to claim it was, so he can go bomb someone else, it is almost an election year after all....

I saw the report on CNN. Now, I am in Taiwan currently so it's possible that I'm seeing a different CNN than you are but it was Wolf Blitzer reporting so I think it should have been the same report you see.

It's possible that it has since been ruled out (as it was about 8pm EST when I saw the report) but they seemed pretty certain.

Which one? Normally I would think the hydroelectric one, but some one mentioned that they thought it was a nuke plant which had Niagra in the name.

Why do I get the feeling he would consider saying that? Something along the lines of "God has gone the way of the French so we should make war on Heaven."

Wanted to expand your verse's to include mine too.. Tonight at the IRS (where I work) power went down for a few hrs due to lightning, and by the time it came back up and everyone's computer had been fixed, (mine was the very last) it was time to go home. So I guess what I wanted to say was, thank you America for paying me to sit on my ass tonight. Your taxes helped fund my inactivity.

Not at all. That was my second thought. I don't know anybody that lives in those areas personally, but there are a couple regular posters to this board that live there. Found out Philomel in Toronto was okay but also without water and upset about that. Still haven't heard from Lost Angel, who I believe is in a burrough of New York.

Regardless, once that was thought I went, "Dude. Mars is going to be so bright!"

Just an update:

Quote:

``We're the world's greatest superpower, but we have a Third World electricity grid,'' said former Energy Secretary Bill Richardson, now governor of New Mexico.

Quote:

William Museler, president of the New York Independent System Operator, which manages the state's electric grid, said ``huge'' power fluctuations originating from a Midwest power plant started the downfall of the grid at 4:11 p.m. Thursday. He said the power swings became so large that the Ontario system could not sustain them, and the problem migrated to New York.

As the power fluctuated, generators in New York tripped off to protect themselves, an act of self-preservation that made it possible to restore power Friday morning, Museler said.

Quote:

In Vermont, a quick shutdown of power fees from New York helped the state avoid major outages.

Quote:

After the 1965 blackout hit the Northeast, the industry sought to put in safeguards that would isolate future transmission problems. In some cases this worked.

Quote:

Michehl Gent, the NERC president, said he was fairly confident terrorism wasn't involved. Federal officials earlier said there is no evidence of terrorism.

``We don't have any indication of blown-up equipment,'' he said on ABC's ``Good Morning America.'' ``So, we're almost certain it's not terrorism of any kind.''

Mars is nice right now, but it is still just a little red dot with the eye alone. Thus not overly impressive.

I'm in Toronto. It's been trippy here for the past 24 hours. We're currently on what they're calling rolling blackouts where different areas lose power for a few hours at a time. It first came back on around midnight last night and has gone off twice today. It sounds like it will be a few days before it's all back to normal. Public transit is off 'til monday so it's wild seeing what looks like the whole city walking.

Sometimes I get confused, but George W. has asked us Americans to turn in our neighbors for acting suspicious. Police officers now have the ability to search anyone they think may be a "Terrorist." Phone lines, email, etc. may be freely tapped by the government and American citizens can be seized and held in secret indefinitely on no formal charges.

Then, this huge blackout happens involving Canada and 1/4 of the U.S. and immediately we are assured it is not a terrorist attack by the media and White House.

But nobody knows what happened, even 48 hours later. An official was quoted as saying, "There have been no signs of an explosion." Just because nothing exploded doesn't mean anything.

It seems very likely that some kind of computer generated signal or radio wave or surge could knock out power without a big explosion.

My fear is that the US government tells us to be afraid of terrorists when there aren't any, but then when shit hits the fan they lie and say nothing is wrong.

I don't fear the shit hitting the fan, I don't fear more biuldings blowing up (any more than I fear unlikely death of myself or others by other means) I fear the gradual diminishment of our liberties.

There is a state full of licence plates reading "Live Free or Die" I don't see them fighting as their freedoms get taken away.

I think it's stupid to protect the "Land of the Free" by taking away that freedom.

I don't want to give the wrong idea, I don't think that the government is evil or anything, but even well meaning measures can have horribly negative effects.

(Well maybe I do think that the government is a little evil.)
