An independent production company is attempting to produce a second season of Firefly and requires statistical information on the fanbase.

You can check out their site here:

http://www.fireflyseason2.com

And here's a bit of info from their main page:

Quote:

The Firefly Season 2 Project:

Captain Mal and the crew of Serenity need your help to stay flying.

We are looking to push the envelope of episodic television by offering Season Two of Firefly in a groundbreaking new format. Each episode (or the entire season) would be made available for purchase in Standard or Hi-Definition.

It's possible that subscribers may choose one of three playback options; monthly DVD deliveries, TV On-Demand using your cable or satellite provider, or computer viewing via Streaming Download.

It's also possible that a box set of DVD's would be available at the end of the season.

In order for our plan to be successful, we need to take stock of the browncoat recruits that support our cause. It will only take a minute, is strictly confidential, and each profile will take us one step closer to victory!

Now that would mean that most of the fanbase leaders (if you can you want to call them that) support this.

I say if Jeremy, Haken, and Gossi are behind them then why not try to see what we can do.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

I'm feeling mean but I'm resistant to help this project because it's not really the direction I'd want Firefly to take.

Obviously I'd much rather see any future than nothing, so I hope I don't have false expectations. But I still have very high hopes for Serenity 2. A proper season 2 of Firefly would be great too, but straight to DVD, a last straw.

I was just posting the news of the site.

But it seems rumors relating to this second season project are flying rampant on the net because I've been receiving more and more inquiries about it. There's even a reference to the second season project over at TV Guide.

Here's a quote from TV Guide's site:

Quote:

Question: Is there any chance whatsoever that Firefly could be picked up and brought back to life?

Ausiello: An independent production company is apparently trying to obtain rights from Fox to continue the series either on another network or on an in-demand basis, so I guess the answer is yes.

I think a bit of clarification is in order before things get out of hand. Based on what I know right now, there isn't going to be another season of Firefly in it's current form. And while the above answer seems to make the whole task of bringing back the Firefly we all know and love quite trivial, it is definately not.

All this independent (and apparently nameless)production company is attempting to do at the moment is to purchase the rights to produce another season of Firefly. Having the rights to produce does not guarantee they'll be producing the same product with the same actors, writers, or even production quality.

There are LOTS of financial, legal, and logistical reasons why an independent production company will have a difficult time at bringing back the "original" Firefly.

IMHO, I think it's great someone is attempting to do this, but I do think that getting the newly formed CW network to pickup Firefly is a better way to go.

Also, we still haven't heard from Universal yet. There's still a great chance that we might get a sequel if sales of the DVD keeps up.

Interesting. Could be a long shot at best but they aren't asking for any personal information and the Name/email/location fields are all optional so I don't have a problem giving them my opinion. I LOVE the idea of a pay-per-view season and think that we will see those type of shows in the future....so why not Firefly? With all places TV can be downloaded from (Tivo, Cable Boxes, Xbox LIVE Marketplace, and countless legal internet sites) I think they could reach a very large audience that way. Do the math $40-$80 for a season times 2-4 million viewers = $80-$320 million per season. Add $$ they could make from 1 or 2 (wouldn't want too many otherwise you'd piss people off) 30 second commercials before the show and you have a pretty good revenue stream. Offering a discount for repeat buyers or referral discounts could also be used to keep the money coming in.

I do agree it is a long shot though. If the site is for real and they are doing what they say they are trying to do, they'd still have to convince Joss and the actors to jump on board.

All that being said, I filled it out and will keep the faith that someday Serenity will fly again.

Thanks, Haken, I've been reading this stuff for days, and noticed the T.V. Guide reference on the net earlier in the day. I haven't joined any of the conversations though, because frankly I've been waiting to hear from you.

Do you think then, that it's a good idea to go to their website and give them our info? I see on their site that personal stuff is optional and that we can use a web address for the email. So I personally see no harm in giving them the barest of info. Would rather direct my effort somewhere that will truly count if this is too shaky though.

I trust your judgement, and I'll bet a lot of other folks around here do to.

Thanks,
Diane

The Independent Production Company that is trying to purchase the rights is Billiant Screen Entertaiment. You can go to their site and you will see that they have worked on made for TV movies and TV series for the major networks before. So I'll assume they know their way around the business.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

What happened? He see your face?

Haken. What u just said makes all the sense in the world. I was much more excited when u had posted news about CW.

I have talked with a former employee of the studio “Screengemstudios” (not that big of a studio outputs: Maximum overdrive, firestarter, 28 Days, hackers, the now cancelled surface, and more) who has been in the business since the mid eighties and explained to him this situation.
I was intro'ed via a set designer.

I explained best I could the show, movies and DVD sales. He had heard of it. (whew!)

Thoughts given to me were: (chopped up and paraphrased, he mostly wanted to talk about locations and sets)

He better have a LOT of money and be VERY credible. Being affiliated with gambling sites and not much else, does not help in gaining support even if he has the rights. ...and fox will have to see no benefit in owning it. Business is business though, and anything can happen.

An unwise move to go this far ahead on the NET without having as much as spoken to the creator. Which leads me to believe, if in fact rights were attained, the show would be totally different. When u have 40 mil for a movie you can re-create sets, get all the CGI, and actors to put in it. When u are Fox or another NETWORK, for that matter, u can make good quality shows because u have money and just as important contacts and structure. Wouldn't this fella be pushed aside by the Big boys when they saw the profit?

He was very aware of who Joss is, for SGS filmed "Dawsons Creek" for the WB.

Thats all I got. ..and I am not slamming the guy, hell, I admire his enthusiasm. Didn't know if anyone else out there had anymore comments on the business side of this endeavor. ..and yes I did fill out the info on that page.

U gonna be smart here Riva?!?

In my opinion, we've nothing to lose by filling out the information they need. The worst case scenario is they farm out the email addresses they get to spammers, but that's why we have spam blockers.

I think we have a good chance here.

i tend to think that if we've not heard from joss on this, then like has been said, it would probably be very very different. and if it was, if they were to go so far as useing different characters (which kinda seems to follow, if joss isnt behind it) then frankly i would rather have a distant hope for a sequal, rather then a continuation thats crap. i mean, it wouldnt be firefly, it would be some weird show that they're technicly allowed to call firefly. and thats no good. just my thoughts

As long as you don't provide any personal information or contribute any money, then it should be okay.

Realistically, though, I don't think the information they collect will be useful in helping them obtain the rights. Both FOX and Universal already have statistics about the Firefly/Serenity fanbase from data they've collected through television ratings, DVD sales, and box office receipts. Additionally, the major studios also have data from their other productions to draw from. It's safe to say that in terms of statistics, there's not much the independent production company can tell the studios that they don't already know.

Hate to say this, but another $40 million dollars and some spare change is probably the only way to get Firefly or Serenity back in the air at the moment.

No Joss, no Firefly. It's as simple as that. When I hear that Joss is involved, I'll gladly climb--no, leap--on board. It's Joss's vision which makes this 'verse worth visiting, IMHO.

I agree with the "No Joss, No Deal" stipulation that others have mentioned but I feel that this project is worth signing up for. His questions aren't incredibly personal (they are also optional, it's not like you have to fill in all the blanks as far as I know), he isn't asking for money, he has some backing from fans, and his organization seems legit. I'm not entirely sure he's taking the right direction but I'm not omniscient and he seems willing to take action (and potentially beneficial action at that). I say sign up, and damn the torpedoes.

Nice idea and I filled in a profile, because I think it will help relaunch the series either directly or indirectly. There is definitely money to be made from relaunching the series.

However, I believe that the Sci-Fi channel is our best option for bringing back the series. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if tentative negotiations between Joss and Sci-Fi for a potential mini-series to relaunch the series have already begun.

Also another option may have just presented it self in the form of the CW Network, which is looking for some new shows on top of the shows they will be getting from The WB and UPN. A Serenity series along side shows like Smallville and Veronica Mars makes all kinds of sense to me.

Gossi isn't on board on this one as far as I am aware. And this guy hasn't got the approval of Joss Whedon so why is he still going ahead? And I doubt the Firefly rights would be given to a man whose main claim is running a Costa Rican dating agency. Any if it was so easy, why didn't the people who ran Firefly try and do it?

This is giving false hope to a lot of fans and so many people are going to be crushed when it doesn't happen. Personally, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Stay well away from this project. It'll end in tears.

I'm with the vast majority here who does not trust this. The whole thing seems a long shot at best. And even if they were able to pull it off, with the smaller budget, you'd have to figure that along with it would come different sets, cast, effects, and such. And not to mention the plot changes that would be a result of it all. Perfect examples of this are those straight to DVD sequels that are often made yet no one ever hears about because they're so far from the originals.

Wether ita long shot or not is irrelivant. I'm filling in a form anyway. I'm not gonna bet my life on wether it works or not cause tht don't matter at this point. As has previously been said, the worst tht can happen is that I get spammed (big deal that's hot mails problem not mine). but the best tht can happen is that we get a fully intact second season. If i can spend just a ew minhuets of my time filling in a form and the end result mayby, just mayby is seeing Serenity fly again I'm with it (but Don't expect any donations without more authentic references! )

Agreed. I'm not touching this.

Also, everything Haken said was right on point (I just didn't feel like taking up all the space necessary to quote him. lol). Fox and Universal both already know the viability of the Firefly/Serenity franchise. If it does return to TV, I agree with others that our best hope is the new CW network or Sci-Fi.

I think you're confused as to their purpose. Not saying I support it one way or the other, but the information they're looking for is not just how many people have purchased Firefly or how many people saw Serenity. It's how many people would be willing to use a pay on demand service. Nobody really knows that yet.

This is CRITICAL. It needs to have the vision and control of its creator, no matter where he wants to take it. Joss is one of the most creative television/movie writers in the industry. Without his involvement, the project risks producing just more crap.

I don't want be cynical but has anyone thought that perhaps this is a subtle effort to force Universal to get the Sci-Fi channel movie idea rolling? Let's say that Universal is having cold feet at making the series/movies. Up comes a third party who wants to buy the rights. Universal thought that they can sit on the buying/negotiating rights with Fox until they saw the final DVD sales figures. Now they might have to act pre-emptively just to make sure they have the future rights to do this.

However, we don't quite know the rights situation with Universal and Fox because no one has publically said what they are currently. We know when the movie was in production that Universal only had rights for the movies. If that has changed since Universal's Sci-Fi channel was airing Firefly reruns we don't know. Perhaps that rumor about Universal wanting to do Firefly TV movies on Sci-Fi channel is because they obtained the rights to do a TV show now.

Also I found the whole Universal rumor quite puzzling because if Universal was thinking of doing this why would they let this leak out if they didn't think they had the legal rights to do so? All the rumor could do is to make the negotiating with Fox more difficult.

I have the vauge feeling this is all part of negotiations between Mutant Enemy, Fox and Universal and we are just seeing glimpses of it.
